 I found to indepent errors all pointing to:

 /usr/lib/libgnutls.so.26: undefined symbol:
 cnutls_srp_1024_group_generator, version GNUTLS_1_4
 ^
Maybe it should read gnutls_srp_1024_group_generator?

I have installed postgresql-8.3 using synaptic. 

An update is due:

apt-cache policy postgresql-8.3
postgresql-8.3:

However, the update fails:

apt-get install postgresql-8.3

obviously, the /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.3 stop does not work because
the server is not running:

/etc/init.d# ./postgresql-8.3 start

Could you please provide a way how to eliminate postgresql-8.3 and get
it working. Interestingly in the postgresql-7.4 script similar errors
are present which prevent purging postgresql-7.4.

 So why don't you just do what it says?  It seems like you have
 postgresql-8.3 process running with invalid pid file.  Just kill it
 manually, remove invalid pidfile and try it again.

As far as I can jugde, there is no pg-8.3 running!! I included the 
ps ax|grep postgresql-8.32 results.
