It looks like the version of buildah included in Debian (and Ubuntu) doesn't
support heredocs although this has been fixed for a while in upstream. It looks
like that patch got intentionally reverted in Debian.

This greatly reduces the compatibility with Docker as well as with Podman on
other systems.

To reproduce:

Create a `Dockerfile`:
```
FROM alpine
ARG FOO=bar
COPY <<-EOT /script.sh
  echo "hello ${FOO}"
EOT
ENTRYPOINT ash /script.sh
```

and build with `buildah build -f Dockerfile`. This fails with:

```
$ buildah build -f Dockerfile

Can you elaborate?


After the installation of ibus-keyman the ibus daemon needs to be 
restarted which is what the `postinst` script tries to do. It restarts 
or stops ibus-daemon, then checks if ibus-daemon is running - if not it 
will start it. If any of these steps fail we still want to successfully 
finish the installation. Since then ibus is not running the user will 
not be able to see any installed Keyman keyboards and will have to 
logout or reboot which will start ibus.


If we return with a non-exit code from the postinst script instead the 
installation of ibus-keyman aborts. The user can then try to install 
again which might lead into the same error, leaving him with an 
uninstallable ibus-keyman where the only thing that failed was the 
failure to (re-)start ibus.


Since all of postinst deals with ibus-daemon which is not part of the 
ibus-keyman package it seems to me that ignoring failures would be 
acceptable. This means the admin (who in most cases will be an ordinary 
user) won't be aware of problems with the postinst script, but he might 
notice ibus-daemon not running. Ignoring these postinst errors makes it 
harder for the developer to notice and fix errors in the postinst 
script, but IMO gives a better experience for the ordinary user.



Did I miss something but is the *only* change upstream the addition echo?
That might well be the only change. New upstream versions get released 
simultaneously with the same version on all platforms, so it can happen 
that there is a new version without any changes on a platform. IMO this 
still has value since it simplifies dealing with help requests (the 
latest version of the binary is the latest version in the source code).


Doesn't feel very appropriate at this stage... 
That's your call. I still would like to see this version be available in 
Bookworm, but if you decide that's not an appropriate change I can live 
with that.

[ Reason ]

While keyman has autopkgtests and so would qualify for automatic migration, the 
tests are skipped on s390x.
The reason is that Keyman doesn't yet support big endian architecture and so 
can't run on s390x (even though it's
possible to build it on that platform it won't work). See upstream 
bughttps://github.com/keymanapp/keyman/issues/5111.

Included are only small changes: one is a small fix in the postinst script, the 
other is an update of a timestamp in a
locale. It also excludes s390x from building since that makes more sense than 
building an unusable library.

Another reason why I'd like to get this version approved is that it brings the 
version in Debian on par with the upstream
version which simplifies user help requests.

[ Impact ]

The user won't notice any difference, but it would be helpful for the support 
team if the users would use the same version
that is used on the other platforms.

[ Tests ]

Manually installed the binaries and verified that things work as expected.

[ Risks ]

Changes are minimal. I can't think of any negative side effects.

Bug#1019453: ibus: IBus doesn't work correctly in apps that don't support surrounding text

My fault. I created a local package with the upstream changes and fell 
in the ibus link trap - the upstream repo uses links for ibusimcontext.c 
for gtk2/gtk3/gtk4 whereas the source package uses three different 
files. When I imported the patches I forgot to make the changes for gtk3 
and gtk4. With the correct patches that match upstream everything works 
as expected. 


Attached are patches for the three related upstream commits (I tested 
with all three commits, although probably only 0002 would be needed for 
this bug).

Subject: [PATCH 3/3] client/gtk2: Update surrounding text properties by focus
 in

ibus_input_context_set_surrounding_text() should be succeeded
if input contexts are different so that ibus engines can
update surrounding text properties with focus in event.

When an input context is created newly, RequireSurroundingText D-Bus
signal could not be received yet and set_surrounding_text() is failed.
Now "require-surrounding-text" signal is added to IBusInputContext
and clients can call set_surrounding_text() later.

 AFAICT the problem in Firefox has been fixed in Firefox 99. However, 
in my testing I noticed a different bug that looks related (Things work 
correctly in Firefox >= 99 on Bionic with ibus 1.5.17, but typing in a 
text field on a webpage doesn't work correctly with recent Firefox on 
Jammy with ibus 1.5.26). I'm still trying to find out where in the many 
layers and versions things go wrong, which is no so easy because of 
updated dependencies...


I'll report back once I have an idea what would make sense regarding 
patching ibus.

When first introduced IBUS_CAP_SURROUNDING_TEXT was a runtime-flag that 
allowed

ibus engines to detect whether or not a client application supports
surrounding text. This was determined by the return value of the 
`retrieve-surrounding`

signal. If the emit of the signal returned false the conclusion was that
the client app doesn't support surrounding text and the 
IBUS_CAP_SURROUNDING_TEXT

flag was cleared.

Some time later it was discovered that Firefox (which implements 
surrounding text)
sometimes returns `false` from the signal handler for the first 
character, but
succeeds for subsequent calls. The workaround to fix this bug was that 
instead

of clearing the IBUS_CAP_SURROUNDING_TEXT flag a warning was output.
This makes the IBUS_CAP_SURROUNDING_TEXT flag basically a compile time flag.

However, this workaround has the side effect that now it is impossible 
for engines
to detect if the client implements surrounding text. This has the effect 
that

apps that don't implement surrounding text no longer work properly, e.g.
the backspace key no longer works properly.

This change tries to undo the negative side effects while still keeping 
the workaround
for Firefox. It does this by checking the name of the client 
application. If the name
is "firefox" we output the warning and don't touch the 
IBUS_CAP_SURROUNDING_TEXT

flag. For other apps we assume that they don't support surrounding text and

the backspace key no longer works. Having ibus support surrounding text is
only half of what's needed because the application (e.g. Chrome) also needs
to support surrounding text. Currently ibus engines have no way to detect if the
application supports surrounding text because the capability is always set.

See #2354 for a scenario that is affected by this behavior: the user types 'n',
the engine outputs 'n'. Next the user types ';', the end result should be that
'n' gets replaced by 'ŋ'.
If the application supports surrounding text (e.g. gedit) the engine can use
`ibus_engine_delete_surrounding_text()` to delete 'n'.
However, if the application doesn't support surrounding text (e.g. Chrome,
gnome-terminal) then the engine has to use `ibus_engine_forward_key_event()` to
send a backspace to delete the previous character. Which means the engine needs
a way to detect whether or not the application supports surrounding text.

An example where this behavior can be seen is in ibus-engine-keyman with the
[IPA (SIL)](https://keyman.com/keyboards/sil_ipa) keyboard.

Hi,

I'm not sure what the process is - someone suggested I should submit a 
ITP bug for the consolidated source package.


Here's the deal:

Up until now the upstream Keyman project 
(https://github.com/keymanapp/keyman) created three source packages from 
one git repo:


 * *keyman-config* that build the binary packages *keyman* and
   *python3-keyman-config*
 * *ibus-keyman* that build the binary package *ibus-keyman*
 * *keyman-keyboardprocessor* that build the binary packages
   *libkmnkbp-dev* and *libkmnkbp0-0*

(it also created three additional source packages for the older KMFL 
(kmflcomp, libkmfl, and ibus-kmfl), but those are no longer actively 
developed and won't be included in future releases)


Starting with Keyman 15 the three source packages got consolidate into 
one source package named *keyman* that builds the binary packages listed 
above.


I'm not sure if this is considered a new package that needs to go 
through the entire workflow for a new package, or if that's simply 
considered the successor of the three older source packages. Please advice.


Anyways, I uploaded the new source package to mentors.debian.net.

Hi,

I'd like to help to update ibus-keyman (and related packages) to a newer 
upstream version. The current stable upstream Keyman version is 13, with 
version 14 being around the corner, whereas the package is still at 
version 11.


I'm willing to take co-maintenance for ibus-keyman and the other related 
packages (ibus-kmfl, keyman-config, keyman-keyboardprocessor, kmflcomp, 
and libkmfl).


There are several packages that go together and that share the same 
upstream source repo:

- ibus-keyman
- ibus-kmfl
- keyman-config
- keyman-keyboardprocessor
- kmflcomp
- libkmfl

This package meets the criteria for salvage [1]: there are missing 
upstream releases AND this obviously requires a package upload AND there 
hasn't been any activity regarding the package in the last two years AND 
there was no reaction at all to my attempts to get in contact with the 
maintainer [2].


Thanks for helping move this forward (in whatever way).

I contacted him again (on 14-JAN), but unfortunately I still haven't 
heard anything from Daniel. Looks like we should consider other methods 
to move this forward.

the easy thing first. I'll write a mail when the description has changed.

i think that there is a problem with the Englisch description too. It seems
to be copied verbatim from [1]. "synthesized … emulator" sounds weird to me.
And I wonder how important the hardware restrictions are nowadays.

Somebody commented on the web interface to the best translation:

   (umlaeute) i still doubt that "eine Stimme geben" is the best 
translation

   for "to voice", as the latter appears to be a terminus technicus in the
   context of organs (though i do not know the correct English translation;
   a quick web search indicates that the correct translation would be
   "intonieren")

Wikipedia [2] says yes to "intonieren" and there even is an English
translation [3] for intonieren (to intone). The Google translation is

   Intonation as tone color and volume balance

   Especially in keyboard instruments, where there is a separate tone
   generator (usually strings or whistles) for each tone, intonation means
   the equalization of volume and tone of the tone generators.

I suggest to explain intonise and reword short description and first
paragraph of the description[4] to make it better understandable for
non-musicians:

Aeolus is a pipe organ emulator that should be good enough to make an

Dear i18n-folks, Julian, Holger!

First of all, the bug is fixed now.

But one more time a basic problem pops up. The maintainer has close to zero
influence on these translations. A mail to the respective l10n-list 
sometimes

might also fail as it is also possible that $(random translator) working on
DDTP is not subscribed to the list.

Another problem is that the corrected version will make it only into 
Sid|Buster,

as the Translation-xx files are not updated for stable and before.

Feel free to close the bug.

"offload" and "onto" don't fit together. And I'm wondering what would
be a better wording.

Perhaps
  "You need this package|software to make these devices work with iSCSI"?

Hopyfully some native speaker has a better suggestion for this sentence
and the short description.

The wiki is not really helpful here. With 'GET de 2' one will get
some random descriptions. The DDTP documentation in general should
be reviewed and updated. The transfer from the package source to
the DDTP and from there to the FTP archive is somewhere in the dark.
After the release it usually takes month to modify and restart the
responsible scripts.

I was to lazy to report that the encoding was ok shortly afterward.

On Monday evening the DDTP service was moved to a new host (1).

The translations transferred before the actual work started (about before 6
pm)have a problem with non-ASCII characters as reported in (2), (3).

The German translations suffer from bad encoded German Umlauts
(Ä,Ö,Ü;ä;ö;ü), Guillemets and the sharp s(ß), e.g. (4).

Translations that made it into the system today are correct.

It's even worse: no update since the day before the wheezy release (1,2).

 installed as dependency.  It doesn't explain what it does.  But

I just wanted to introduce a unified description, add common boilerplate
and be as minimally invasive as an NMU. But IMHO you are very right. It's a
shared library's nature to be used by several programs. Without explaining
their purpose it is just namedropping.

I'm not a computer scientist by education. I don't know anything about
cryptographic protocols. From my Jon Doe POV there is no benefit in

 With my limited view I assume it is not necessary to request this
 specific version. Otherwise I see obstacles to use scantailor on wheezy.

I found (1) and there under Configuration:

 * If you have missing dependencies you will get an error message 
telling you
 what is missing. You can then search for the missing package and 
install it.


 * If you have a library and header files installed in a non-standard place
 then cmake will not find them. In that case you can run the interactive
 program ccmake which allows you to specify paths to libraries and header
 files.

My POV is: As you already found the error (line 295), your conclusion is
wrong. You have 1.49.0.1, but cmake searches for 1.35. So patch 
CMakeLists.txt

or run ccmake.

If you don't want scantailor just to compile and run on your personal Wheezy
box, compile for unstable, wait for testing migration and then do a 
backport.

comparing
them it's probably more effictive to have a look at the 
maint-guide(-xx) (2)

and developers-reference (3) packages - in that order.

Take it as an exercise. Reading a text book or listening to some lecture is
one thing. Making use of some theory in real life *and failing to do so* is
the other thing. And that is really instructive :-(

Today i worked on updating the description of the clang package (1, 2, 
3). As

i store copies of my translations, (2) is my fault and passed the review :(

In other words: both the web interface and the e-mail interface don't 
compare

the number of paragraphs in the original description and the translation.

I would love to see this fixed in DDTSS-NG promptly after the Wheezy
release ;-)

I would like to suggest another wording for the package description.

The current description is:

 gerbv is a utility for viewing Gerber RS-274X files, Excellon drill files,
 and CSV pick-and-place files. Gerber files are used for communicating
 printed circuit board (PCB) designs to PCB manufacturers.

For me the design in the short description is wrong and the CSV 
pick-and-place

files were a riddle for translators. Do you mean input data for placement
machines?

Here is my suggestion:

Until 27.09.2012 19:53 (last response from Churro) my user experience was an
almost immediate response: empty mail to pd...@ddtp.debian.net, (no 
subject),

translation attached (last message sent: 27.09.2012 19:51).

Now I've to wait about two days to be sure that something went wrong with
pd...@ddtp.debian.net. No response within five minutes, with about two days
delay my mail provider sends a message that he gave up.

At present I'm not aware of means to handle these trivial tasks. I would

Bug#700324: manpages-de: Please keep in sync with english (french) man pages

 There have been several releases of the english (and corresponding
 french) man pages. However, the German ones last update was on October
 (unfortunately it is difficult to obtain the version the German
 translation is based on from debian/changelog.debian).

As I understand things, perhaps manpages-de would be in sync without 
#692595.

I filed it very close to the date freeze exceptions became harder.

My impression with former releases of manpages-de was that the number of
reviewed changes and (also reviewed) new translations increased with every
release. May be that I'm too pessimistic: I think manpages-de based on 3.44
won't find their way into Wheezy. Thus I think that it is work that can be
postponed past the release.

I'm aware that you, Chris and Tobias did a lot of work in the 
repository. And
that there are several translations I've to work on before they can be 
tagged

DONE. My excuses are: the last paragraph and DDTP.

 Since the French ones are kept in sync, I suppose a freeze exception
 for the German ones might be granted as well.

As can be read in #69259, the french translation was ahead the German one
because the French team follows upstream git. And I'm afraid, there are more
contributors.

If I understand things right, the French argumentation is:

thank you for maintaining rev-plugins.

I'm sorry that to me the package description seems problematic. And I'm 
aware

that it's just a library that gets pulled in. The average user should not
need the description to decide whether he needs it …

Nevertheless:
 - It uses uncommon (FP) and misspelled abbreviations (LADSPA = Linux Audio
   Developer's Simple Plugin API). (1)
 - There are plugins in the package name, but there is just one 
plugin inside.

   But that seems to originate from upstream. (2)
 - For people who don't know gverb the comparison is quite useless.

I would be more comfortable with something like:

Description: reverb LADSPA plugin
 This reverb features two inputs for stereo operation,
 and some code to prevent floating point denormalisation.

Dear Maintainers,
the package descriptions of the *gupnp-av* packages (1) were a little 
bit hard

to understand for me. My main concern is the boilerplate as used in (2):

 Description: Audio/Visual utility library for GUPnP
  An audio/visual utility library for GUPnP, providing DIDL 
parser/writer

  and search criteria parser objects.

I'd rather seen an explanation of GUPnp and GUPnP-AV (3):

GUPnP is an elegant, object-oriented open source framework for creating
UPnP devices and control points, written in C using GObject and 
libsoup.

The GUPnP API is intended to be easy to use, efficient and flexible. It
provides the same set of features as libupnp, but shields the developer
from most of UPnP's internals.

Perhaps it is not really necessary for the average installer to know

Dear Maintainer,

working on the German translation of the package description (1, english
version) we encountered two minor issues. I believe they are not worth 
filing

two seperate bugs as they as both can be solved by changing just
debian/control: The long description and the Suggests section refer to
non-existent packages (boot-floppies, di-packages-build).

Because the scope of the package is quite limited (build-dependency of
bterm-unifont and debian-installer) I think the second paragraph of the long
description can be skipped as well.

For your convenience I prepared a patch.

I think that there are some typos and potential for improvements in the
package description (1). (CCed l10n-english as it is a new package).


Current state:

 FreetuxTV is a video player based on LibVLC allowing you to watch and

 TV on your PC. A large database (growing daily) of free 
WebTV/WebRadio/WebCam
 channels in more than 20 languages is accessible. You can also play 
streams
 from ISP television service if it provides this feature. Moreover, it 
is also

 possible to easily program your recording on each channel with differents
 transcoding formats.
 .
 The vlc package provides all multimedia codecs required by freetuxtv.

I'm afraid the short description does not adhere to the Developer's 
reference,

section 6.2.2 (no need for capitalization). And a program does not allow
something.

Please consider my proposal for a new description.

I do my vocabulary search on dict.leo.org and did not find anyways. There
were sensible translations for anyway. And I found a two forum threads,
partly in German. Actually anyways is in use as well, but there many
different explanations und views: regional variant (AE), slang, should 
not be

used in written English.

Bug#692595: New version of Linux man-pages

 Is manpages-de ready for 3.44 already ? (french translation is up to date
 wrt 3.44)

I'm afraid, no.

I started having a look at the translations a week ago. I took the upstream
tarball, decompressed it, updated a copy of the PO files, and had a first
glance at the number of fuzzy and untranslated messages. This time we have
approximately 100 files with more than one change (just the version number).
Most of the manpages would still build, but with some untranslated 
parts. The

ugliest beast would be proc.5 with about 20 per cent not translated.

How did you manage to be up to date so short after the upstream release? Do
you follow it's git repo? As I understand things, manpages(-dev) are 
upstream

for the German translations. Thus a new release of your package would cause
some German team activity - at least on behalf of the maintainer ;-)

 Given today's mail from release team, I guess an upload of all these 3
 sources packages should happen very soon to get a chance to enter wheezy.

Probably it's already too late (1): At present the release team accepts
documentation updates only with fixes of RC bugs.

Therefore I suggest not to do a 3.44 upload now, and make an upload of the
*latest upstream version before release* after the release as first 
update for

stable. Meanwhile the German team/me could work on 3.44, and later versions
to keep on running things.

reviewing the translation of libhepmc-dev (1) I asked myself whether the 
wording

(copied from upstream (2)) is correct.

I'm a German native and quite confident in my command of the English 
language.

So the event record is my problem. Shouldn't it be an event recorder?

Moreover, in the short descriptions there are too many capital letters 
and the

short descriptions of libhepmcfio and libhepmcfio4-dev do not match the rest
of the short descriptions. (3)

How about

libhepmcfio4: event record for Monte Carlo Generators, fio library
and
libhepmcfio-dev: event record for Monte Carlo Generators, fio library - 
development files?

If you consider to update the translations, I suggest starting from
scratch,
using po4a to convert the manpages, creating a compendium and applying
it to
the fresh PO files …
 

po4a allows to retrieve existing translation, no need to actually start
from scratch, please refer to the “HOWTO convert a pre-existing
translation to po4a?” section of po4a(7).
   


I'm aware that po4a can import previous translations and used
this feature a lot. But it is not always sensible.

I converted lots of manpages for the manpages-de translation
effort. A lot of structural adaptions had to be done and some
existing translations were of poor quality.

That's why I suggested starting from scratch.

are outdated. The Linux man-pages project is quite active (1), the 
grouping of

the manual pages has changed (2).

Thus the descriptions of manpages-pt (3) and manpages-pt-dev (4) are 
wrong as

well as the package descriptions are outdated/incorrect.

Surely the descriptions have to be updated and the content has to be
rearranged.

   Description: Portuguese Versions of the Manual Pages
These are the manpages available in Portuguese
This package contains the following sections:
  * 1 = User programs (e.g. ls, ln)
  * 4 = Devices (e.g. hd, sd).
  * 5 = File formats and protocols, syntaxes of several system
files (e.g. wtmp, /etc/passwd, nfs).
  * 6 = Games etc.
  * 7 = Conventions and standards, macro packages, etc.
(e.g. nroff, ascii).


The Developer's Reference does not mandate capitalization in the SD, it is
not sure that these are *all* Portuguese translations.

These are the manpages available in Portuguese
This package contains the following sections:

  * 3 = Libc calls (note that a more comprehensive source of

language.


It's quite easy to patch the manual pages (6).

If you consider to update the translations, I suggest starting from scratch,

At first glance I didn't understand whether it uses just LaTeX

and simple looping structures.

Current  device  drivers support DECWINDOWS, REGIS, TEK4010,
all  PC  graphics  cards,  VT100s,  HP-Plotters,  PostScript
Printers, EPSON Printers and LaserJet Printers.

GLE  runs  on  both  VAXes and PCs, giving an identical user
interface on both platforms.

I suggest to skip the last two paragraphs or to skip the last paragraph and
rewrite the preceding one. Talking about VAXes and VT100s could make people
think that the software is quite dated. Obviously it is actively maintained.

In general the formatting has the charme of man output.

Please consider my proposol (LaTeX clarified, DEC hardware references 
removed)

as a starting point for a new description.

GLE is a high quality graphics package for scientists, combining
