In which environment are you building ? I'm building in a clean sid chroot. I've just recreate my pbuilder chroot and I still have no issue (pdebuild launched 3 times). I doubt There is an interest to wast time fixing this for Etch since there is no hardware to support VDrift on these architectures. It seems your missing CFLAGS += -fPIC in your debian/rules. I already tried but it doesn't fix the issue. CFLAGS seem to be reinitialised somewhere. I don't know how i can trace this.
