Bug#845788: plasma-desktop: Incorrect values in ~/.config/plasma*

Mmh, I see the en_NL option in the formats kcm, which isn't a valid
locales value. This seems to be a qt issue, the combos are filled
calling:
QList allLocales =
QLocale::matchingLocales(QLocale::AnyLanguage, QLocale::AnyScript,
QLocale::AnyCountry);

I'm attaching a minimal qlocale's ls names, that can be compiled with:
c++ -fPIC -lQt5Core main.cpp
-I/usr/include/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5/QtCore
-I/usr/include/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5 -o main

In the hope that this might ease the reproducibility of the issue. The
script returns error if the en_NL name is present.

This could be improved using the "official" list of valid locales
entries (/usr/share/i18n/SUPPORTED).

Happy hacking,

I have reset the language to its intended value of en_US.UTF-8 using
`kcmshell5 formats`.

Thanks for your helpful answer.

Bug#846945: skytraq: cannot set new location; in 1.5.3-1, not in 1.5.0-3

2016-12-04 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond
Package: gpsbabel
Version: 1.5.3-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I have a GPS logger, a GT-730FL-S, from which I can get the data with command

$ gpsbabel -i skytraq -f /dev/ttyACM0 -o gpx -F `date '+%Y%m%d-%H%M%S'`.gpx

in jessie, gpsbabel version 1.5.0-3.

Today, the same command fails in stretch, gpsbabel version 1.5.3-1, with
message
  skytraq: cannot set new location

It did work in stretch on Nov 27 13:57, but I apparently updated gpsbabel
on Nov 27 16:18. Today was the first use since that update.

Bug#845788: plasma-desktop: Incorrect values in ~/.config/plasma*

2016-11-26 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond
Package: plasma-desktop
Version: 4:5.8.2-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I live in the Netherlands but I prefer to communicate with my computer systems
in English. I have answered the related questions
during the installation of Stretch Alpha 8 accordingly.

Now a number of applications complain about the locale. An example is:
jeroen@zandbak:~$ man ssh-keygen
man: can't set the locale; make sure $LC_* and $LANG are correct

The $LC_* variables appear to not be set.

jeroen@zandbak:~$ echo $LANG
en_NL.UTF-8
jeroen@zandbak:~$ echo $LANGUAGE
en_US:en

Some digging showed that en_NL.UTF-8 is an incorrect value, and that it is
set in files:
jeroen@zandbak:~/.config$ grep en_NL *
plasma-locale-settings.sh:export LANG=en_NL.UTF-8
plasma-localerc:LANG=en_NL.UTF-8

Questions:
1. Can I overwrite the values in these files manually, or do I need to use some
dialog?
2. How to keep other users from stubling on this problem?

Regards, jeroen.

Maybe that could be reworded to mention that they can be pre-installed
but I doubt that's a huge issue.

Agree.

On the same page command reportbug installation-reports is wrong;
should not have the final 's'.

The command is actually correct: installation-report is a package,
while

installation-reports is a pseudo package which collects installation
reports.

Thanks for the clarification.

Perhaps I should take the next item elsewhere: Once installation is
complete, I cannot find Apper, nor can I get Discover to install
additional software.

I think it would be nice to file a separate bug report for that.

Bug#845575: plasma-discover can neither install new software nor perform updates

2016-11-24 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond
Package: plasma-discover
Version: 5.8.3-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

In the systray I get the message that 23 (in this case) packages
can be updated. Clicking on the message starts plasma-discover which
cannot find these updates. According to plasma-discover, my system
is up to date.

However, 'sudo apt-get upgrade' does find 23 packages to update.

Also, all menu's that should list all available applications
are empty; hence plasma-discover cannot be used to add applications.
In addition, searching returns no results. For instance, 'ntp' cannot
be found.

Bug#728363: Subject: kde-full: Starting synaptic in kde asks for root password when sudo installed and used.

2013-10-31 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond [Bahco]
Package: kde-full
Version: 5:77+deb7u1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

On a clean install (hard disk has had its partitions changed) I installed
among others the base system, sudo, xorg, kde-full and synaptic.

Because I installed and sudo, my machine does NOT have a ROOT password.

Trying to start synaptic from the KDE menu results in a message box stating:
1. The action you requested needs root priviliges, which is correct.
2. Please enter the root's password ... which is incorrect when sudo is
used. There is no root's password and entering the current user's password
results in an invalid password error.

The bottom line is that I cannot start synaptic from KDE.

Trying to start synaptic from a shell results in error:
(synaptic:3668): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0

Bug#726180: keepass2: Symbolic link to database is replaced by copy of database

2013-10-13 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond
Package: keepass2
Version: 2.19+dfsg-2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Perform the following steps:

1. Create the keePass database in ~/Documents/.
2. Create a symbolic link from the database above in ~/Desktop/.
3. Start keepass2 using this symbolic link.
4. Make some changes in users, passwords, etc.
5. Save the database and quit keepass2.

Now the database in ~/Documents/ will not have changed.
The symbolic link in ~/Desktop/ will have been replaced by a regulare file,
that is, a database containing the changes made in step 4 above.

Bug#723104: gnome: Clean netinst of Debian 7.1.0: First startup of Gnome fails.

2013-09-16 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond
Package: gnome
Version: 1:3.4+7
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I've just completed a netinst of Debian 7.1.0 from an ISO downloaded and burned
today.

On the first login to my user account after this install, Gnome fails to start
and drops into some fallback mode.

At the top right corner of my display there was an icon that displayed an error
message about this, but without any details.

In the syslog I see

There are no stupid questions! :-)

The password for root contains numbers, I thought I had also tried the use
the numbers in the top row of the keyboard, but apparently not.

It appears that the numpad does not work for tty. When I use the top row
for the numbers I can login as root.

Thanks for the hint!

discrepancy:

http://www.debian.org/releases/wheezy/amd64/release-notes/ch-whats-new.en.html#tmpfs-filesystems
2.2.12. Temporary filesystems states that /run is a New location.

http://www.debian.org/releases/wheezy/amd64/apcs02.html.en C.2. The
Directory Tree does not mention /run.

Also, /run seems not to be part of the Filesystem Hierarchy

At least I am getting the same error message:

Bug#681357: Status of fix?

2013-04-19 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond [Bahco]
As far as I understand the Debian repository system, the fix for this
problem will not be in the upcoming wheezy (testing) release; nor in the
next one, sid (unstable). It still seems to be pending in experimental
(rc-buggy) with no release date in sight.

If the above is correct, is there any way to speed up the release of this
fix?

One file was created on 29 May 2011 with what was the current version of
OpenOffice at that time. In that file Ctrl+1 now shows Friday as the last
format option for a Date, with Tevet immediatelly above that.

The other file was created on 16 Mar 2013 with version
1:3.2.1-11+squeeze8. In that file Ctrl+1 does *not* show Friday as the
last format option for a Date. Here, the final item in the list is Tevet.

Bug#703196: Second attempt

2013-03-17 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond [Bahco]
This morning I had another look at this problem and I noticed something I
missed yesterday.

My spreadsheet contains a line which I use as a kind of template. This
line contains the formula like =Annn in column B and =Ennn-Dnnn in column
F (typo here in original report). In all cases nnn is the number of the
current row.

Whenever I insert a new row into the spreadsheet I copy this template row
into it.

What I missed when writing my original report is that in the template row
and its copy the row number had for mysterious reasons gone bad by ten.
After changing this back to the correct row number the date and the time
difference display correctly.

My apologies for this noise.

However, the problem mentioned in the subject of this report still stands:
Format Friday is no longer available for Category Date in the list
presented by CTRL+1 for a newly created .ods file. It is available in the
older file.

Regards,

Jeroen.

Bug#703196: /usr/bin/ooffice: Date can no longer be formatted as the name of the day of the week only.

2013-03-16 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond
Package: openoffice.org-common
Version: 1:3.2.1-11+squeeze8
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/ooffice

I have an old (started on May 29, 2011) and large (765 rows by 14
columns) spreadsheet. Mosts of these rows start with the date in
format '-MM-DD' in column A. Column B in the same row contains
'=Annn' with 'nnn' being the row number. In this spreadsheet the
format of this cell in column B is Category Date, Format Friday, the
last entry in the list presented by CTRL+1. This worked well until
today. Now OO-Calc insists that today, 2013-03-16, is a Wednesday,
while just above 2013-03-14 is correctly showns as a Thursday.

I created a new spreadsheet in an attempt to reproduce this problem in
a smaller file. Now I find that Format Friday is no longer available
for Category Date in the list presented by CTRL+1. At the same time it
*is* available in the large file mentioned above. With the Format
'Fri, Dec 31, 99', in the small file 2013-03-16 correctly formats as
'Sat, Mar 16, 13'.

Also starting today, the large file displays another problem that
cannot be reproduced in the small file. Columns D, E and F are
formatted as Category Time, Format '13:37'. Column D contains '16:39',
column E '17:14', column F '=Ennn-Cnnn'. In the large file column F
shows '00:32', in the small file it correctly shows '00:35'.

I suspect that these two mysteries must be related.

Bug#681357: /usr/bin/qlandkartegt: qlandkartegt does not support Garmin Forerunner 205

2012-07-12 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond
Package: qlandkartegt
Version: 0.18.5-1
Severity: normal

I sent the following message to the [Qlandkartegt-users] mailing list:

On my computer I run Debian Squeeze and QLandKarte GT 0.18.5 as provided
by Debian. I'm trying to download from my Garmin Forerunner 205, but I'm
 blocked by the following error:

 waypoint protocol A100 D110
 track log protocol A302 D311 D304
 route protocol A201 D202 D110 D210
 PVT protocol A800 D800

I get the same error when I try to download tracks or routes. I have
 followed the instructions in http://www.gpsbabel.org/os/Linux_Hotplug.html
for Debian. After that, I found that my Forerunner appears on my computer
as /dev/bus/usb/005/003 which I have entered in Setup - General - Serial
Port. I have set the Type to whatGarmin. Please note that in the error
message above my Garmin is correctly identified as a Forerunner 205.

and I received the following reply Oliver Eichler oliver.eich...@gmx.de:

On my computer I run Debian Squeeze and QLandKarte GT 0.18.5 as provided
by Debian. I'm trying to download from my Garmin Forerunner 205, but I'm

Currently there is no support for the 205. However with that information:

   route protocol A201 D202 D110 D210
   PVT protocol A800 D800

I can tell that it is compatible with the 305. I added a few lines to
the SVN version of GarminDev. You have to compile GarminDev on your own.
Make sure to link against the legacy version of libusb:

 http://www.libusb.org/

Make sure to set the CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX to the same as your QLGT
installation. If qlandkartegt is in /usr/bin then it is /usr. If it is
in /usr/local/bin then it is /usr/local.

message above my Garmin is correctly identified as a Forerunner 205.

No need to enter anything else than the device type for usb device. But
if you enter anything for the port it does not do any harm as the value
 is ignored for USB devices.

  What is my mistake?

No mistake. Just missing device driver ;)

Would it be possible to backport the fix in the SVN version of GarminDev
mentioned
above to Debian Squeeze? I could try to compile GarminDev on my own, but
frankly I'd
rather not.

Bug#641188: Problem is fixed in Debian 6.0.3 squeeze

2011-12-18 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond [Bahco]
Package: libsvga1
Version: 1:1.4.3-29

I have completely replaced the Debian installation on my computer to
switch from lenny to squeeze and from i386 to AMD64 at the same time. The
information at the top and the bottom of this message shows the versions
running on this new installation. In this new installation,
Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6] do result in a working console. So the problem for which
this bug report was submitted now is fixed.

I still have to find how to change the screen resolution and the font size
of these consoles ...

Bug#650841: Found a fix / bypass for this problem

2011-12-09 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond [Bahco]
The file
http://security.debian.org/dists/lenny/updates/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz
now appears to be correct, but it is NOT downloaded automatically.

To force the download, I (as root) removed file
/var/lib/apt/lists/security.debian.org_dists_lenny_updates_main_binary-i386_Packages
(filename depends in your computer's architecture) and started the
update-manager again. At first it reported that my system was up to date,
but when I pressed the Check button, all package lists were downloaded and
package evince was available for update.

After installing this package and stopping the update manager, I had to
remove file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock and reboot my computer to get rid of
the notifier icon in the top right corner of my screen.

In general it would help if you included the kernel and X versions,
and which graphics drivers you are currently using. But then you are
using oldstable, and if the bug is not really serious then it will not
be fixed there, I think you'd be better off upgrading to the current
stable which should have better hardware support.

Until this bug is fixed or bypassed I'm running a completely up-to-date

Bug#641188: /usr/lib/libvga.so.1: Philips 192E LCD Monitor does not switch back to textmode console mode

2011-09-11 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond [Bahco]
Package: libsvga1
Version: 1:1.4.3-27
Severity: normal
File: /usr/lib/libvga.so.1

When I boot my computer, my Philips 192E LCD Monitor displays all
console messages from the BIOS, the bootloader and Linux correctly
before starting X-Windows. However, both on shutdown and on switching
to a textmode virtual console (using Ctrl+Alt+F1) this monitor
complains: 'Cannot display this video mode'. On reboot, the shutdown
messages are not displayed, but the startup messages are displayed
correctly.

Switching the monitor's power off (either before or after the
Ctrl+Alt+F1) and on again does not bypass this problem. This monitor
uses a VGA cable for the connection with the computer.

This is a problem as I require a textmode virtual console to safely
upgrade from lenny to squeeze. I cannot find a telinit runlevel that
starts my computer without starting X-Windows. I doubt that I can
perform this upgrade after booting Debian into single user mode.

Given your explanation I don't see how libsvga1 is involved here. It
seems to me this is just a Linux kernel issue if using KMS, or a X
server issue. In that either of them cannot restore the video card
 to the previous text mode.

Thanks for your quick reply.

I'm sorry, but I don't know what KMS is. I cannot find any packages in
oldstable (lenny) whose names contain 'KMS'.

If there is no KMS in lenny, could you please reassign this bugreport to
the X server package? If there is a KMS in lenny, could you please
explain what it is, or provide a reference to it?

Thanks.

Bug#597642: /usr/bin/kdevelop: Package does not depend on, suggest or recommend any compiler

2010-09-21 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond [Bahco]
Package: kdevelop
Version: 4:3.5.2-1
Severity: minor
File: /usr/bin/kdevelop

*** Please type your report below this line ***

I installed kdevelop et al. and tried to create the SigCreate project as per
http://techbase.kde.org/Development/Tutorials/KDE3/Qt_Designer_and_KDevelop_3.0_for_Beginners

Trying to build this project first runs automake et al., ending with
running configure,
which fails with the somewhat cryptic message
configure: error: C++ preprocessor /lib/cpp fails sanity check
  See `config.log' for more details.

After discovering that this file resides in directory 'debug' I was able
to determine that
the problem was caused by g++ not being installed.

Installing g++ and the packages it depends on solves this problem.

A few seconds after deleting a few lines from a .cpp file, emacs

emacs is consuming all available CPU cycles. It freezes every time I

Bug#321065: display: problem with font

2008-09-07 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond [Bahco]
Package: imagemagick
Version: 7:6.2.4.5.dfsg1-0.14
Severity: normal

I'm experiencing a variant of this bug. When I use `display` on
http://www.xs4all.nl/~jnw/m-f/CB-1/Schoutenstraat-600x400.jpg and
select Miscellany - Image info, I get the same error box about
the same font. This box can be dismissed (or it will disappear by
itself after some time) and the results that are then presented are
perfectly readable in my case. This Image info also mentions the
name of the missing font. Screenshot:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~jnw/debian/bug321065/display-font-bug.png

I don't know if display/imagemagick is correct in its error box, that
is, I don't know if the font is or is not installed on my system. But
as display can continue after this error, and does, the font problem
need not be reported in a separate error box, but could be included in
the Image info.

 Marked as such.

If you want, I can send you the spreadsheet file (56kb).

If you don't mind putting the file in public, that would be great.

http://www.xs4all.nl/~jnw/debian/bug445601/bug445601.sxc

Please note that when exporting this file to xhtml, the progress indicator
at the bottom of the window runs to completion in a very short time. After
that, soffice.bin consumes more than 7 CPU minutes (on my AMD Athlon(TM)
XP 2000+ with 2525.37 bogomips) without refreshing the window or
responding to input.

Just because ooffice (note not oocalc) is in -common. (oocalc is in

The most likely cause is overheating problems in the previous card.

Do you need any more information?

For instance: Should I try and run X under strace? If so, I need some
pointers on how to fit this into the X infrastructure (configuration of X,
gdm, etc.).

Or are there other things I can do?

 Xorg.0.log for sure.

Attached. The last two lines were added after %Xorg was killed remotely.

 CPU consumption eventually.

X does not consume all CPU cycles; merely about 65%. epiphany uses approx.
5%, the remainder is idle. My ssh/shell sessions are completely
responsive.

Run gdb $(pidof X), look at the backtrace a couple times and see if
you can find whether X is stuck somewhere.

At first glance, X seems stuck in __kernel_vsyscall (). No debugging

Bug#286213: reopen 286213

2007-03-11 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond
I cannot exactly reproduce this problem, but I am suffering from (what
seems to be) the same problem: X freezes, *except* *for* *the* *mouse*
*pointer*; keyboard and mouse buttons are completely inoperative, but
all other processes seem to be running normally. In my case this can
happen at any moment; in any application, including the screen saver;
and frequently, sometimes within 15 minutes after boot. And the
problem is present in an up-to-date 'Ubuntu 6.06 LTS', kernel
2.6.15-27-386, as well as in Debian etch, kernel 2.6.17-2-486.

I did some web research on this problem, and found two suspected but
unproven causes. Because of the frequent reboots I don't have any
bookmarks, unfortunately. The first suspect were ntpd and related
utilities. The X system was supposed to be unable with negative time
adjustments while it is running, suggesting an unsigned int being used
for the difference between 'now' and 'then'. In my case the problem
persists even with these programs disabled. And negative adjustments
should not happen that often, if at all.

The second suspect was that someone observed (using strace, iirc) that
X was flooded with SIGALRM signals. The reason for this flood was
unknown.

This gave me reason to think. I'm running on what calls itself an
'Athlon XP (0.18) 1261MHz' CPU on an 'ASUS A7V333 rev 1.02'
motherboard, which consideres itself running on the border of
overheating, according to the sensors utility. And, if my impressions
are correct, the freezes are more likely after more activity, when the
CPU is more likely to be hot.

The next thing I have to research is if X is somehow trying to
terminate because it received some hardware(/BIOS?/kernel?) signal,
and having that termination hit by the same signal again.

What I would like to know is how the mouse pointer escapes the
freeze. :-)

Bug#357135:

2006-03-15 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond
Package: icu21-doc
Version: 2.1-2.1
Severity: important

*** Please type your report below this line ***

In file /usr/share/doc/icu21-doc/html/index.html the links to
Architecture (User's Guide) are broken. They all result in page
http://www.ibm.com/us/

If feasible, I would prefer this User's Guide to be included in this
package.

Bug#309193: glibc 2.3.2 for i386 does not support TLS with a 2.4 kernel

2005-08-04 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond
I am running a 2.4 kernel, so the failure I reported is apparently not a
bug. I also read somewhere that TLS requires package libc6-i686, which is
not installed on my system.

It would be nice if a diagnostic message was generated in this scenario,
instead of TLS failing silently.

Bug#309193: at runtime, TLS does not work, but at compile time, __thread does not give an error

2005-06-14 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond
Jeroen N. Witmond [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Oops, my bad. In simplifying the testcase I removed an essential
part. In the new testcase (attached), the address of variable
'local' is taken in the thread. Unfortunately, this does not remove
the problem. The testcase still exits with 2 instead of zero.

It exits with 0 for me with binutils 2.15-5, gcc-3.3 3.3.5-13, and
libc6 2.3.2.ds1-22. Can you try these versions?

$ dpkg -s [stripped]

Bug#311845: /usr/share/aclocal-1.9/init.m4: test to see if srcdir already configured fails when using symlinks

2005-06-03 Thread Jeroen N. Witmond
Package: automake1.9
Version: 1.9.5-1
Severity: normal
File: /usr/share/aclocal-1.9/init.m4

*** Please type your report below this line ***

Directory path/to/product-3.0.0 is the top of the source tree using
automake et all. path/to/product-3.0.0 was configured with
--enable-maintainer-mode.

path/to/product-testing is a symlink to path/to/product-3.0.0. When I
`cd path/to/product-testing make` after changing a Makefile.am,
`/bin/sh ./config.status --recheck` is invoked.

This fails with configure: error: source directory already
configured; run make distclean there first because file configure,
invoked by ./config.status, effectively performs the test `cd
path/to/product-3.0.0  pwd` != path/to/product-testing, which is
true, but should be false as the directories behind the different
names are one and the same.

A possible solution is replacing the test
  if test `cd $srcdir  pwd` != `pwd`
with
  if test `cd $srcdir  ls --directory --inode .` != `ls --directory
--inode .`

The test above occurs in file /usr/share/aclocal-1.9/init.m4 at line
35, and perhaps at other places.

my previous mail. Where can I find if Debian supports TLS on this
 platform?

It should work. That's why I asked you for a test case.

Attached. 'make -LDFLAGS=-lpthread tls-temp; ./tls-temp;echo $?'. When
make succeeds (it should); '0' should be printed, but '2' is. Adding any
-ftls-model= does not change this.

Also, can you point me to a better way to test for TLS?

TLS can be a runtime property, not a compile time one. Runtime tests
are seriously unwise in autoconf, though, so a compiler check is
probably OK. For instance, on MIPS the linker may be built with TLS
support but the kernel may be missing the relevant trap handler.

TLS should be a runtime property for applications shipped in binary form;
when the application is built on the infrastructure that will run it, it
can be a compile time property (assuming you recompile afer changes in the
infrastructure, eg a kernel upgrade). In fact, I have written an autoconf
macro based on the attached program to check for TLS at build time. The
program and the macro are based on parts of the source of valgrind
http://valgrind.org/ where the problem showed up in the regression test.
Any errors in the program and the macro are of course mine.

Jeroen.

Package: gcc-3.3

In the configure.in for the program I am working on, the reaction of
the compiler to the __thread keyword is used to determine the
availability of TLS. However, the compiler does not complain but the
variables marked with __thread are not local to the thread.
