Aptitude is now in an inconsistent state and can't/won't update anything else. 
Attempts to purge the package have also failed, saying it is now in an 
inconsistent state and should be reinstalled which it can't be

I am finding the same, or very similar. This is the result of aptitude 
upgrade or (subsequently) aptitude install exim4-config:

 This is a issue different from the one reported in #429617. Please add
 your findings to the correct bug report, #429620.

 If grep DEBCONF /etc/exim4/exim4.conf.template gives output, you did
 not accept the changes to the configuration files that were suggested
 during installation. After that, you need to repeat your local changes.

 If grep DEBCONF /etc/exim4/exim4.conf.template is empty, please show
 your /etc/exim4/update-exim4.conf.conf and the first 40ish lines of
 /etc/exim4/exim4.conf.template

Bug#309969: synaptic: segfaults on i386

Synaptic 0.57.4 segfaults when started with gksu -u root either from a
menu or from a console. Starts OK with sudo synaptic or just plain synaptic 
from a console. This is using Unstable on a pentium 4.
