Bug#647123: #647123 - gnome-session fails to start from gdm3
This is an old bug indeed. I was never able to solve this, and since then I moved on to another system, so I wouldn't know if the bug still occurs. Thanks for checking in, though. Hi all, I think we should close this bug. There's no need to add cciss support to the smart_ plugin because smartctl doesn't return any useful info for this controller. I think we had already agreed on this fact a while ago. Best regards, Nicolas

Bug#647123: gnome-session fails to start from gdm3
Dear maintainer, Sadly I am still hitting this bug and even with the upgrade of all GNOME components to 3.2, gnome-session does not load properly when I login from gdm. I don't think this is a corrupted session problem because when I create a second user on the same machine and try to login, the same problem occurs and then only thing that I get is an xterm window. Interestingly, when I type gnome-session in that xterm window, it seems to load fine, so I really don't know what can be causing the problem when loging in from gdm and I don't know where to look for an error. Thanks for your help, Please advise -- Nico
Bug#647123: gnome-session fails to start from gdm3
Is there anything I can do to help debug this? If I create a new user and try to start any of the GNOME sessions, I get the same error: it fails to start from GDM3 but then if I start gnome-session from the xterm window, it seems to load properly. Since there are no error messages, I don't know where to look to solve this. Thanks, -- Nico
Bug#647123: gnome-session fails to start from gdm3
Package: gnome-session Version: 3.0.2-3 Severity: normal Hello dear Maintainer, Ever since I upgraded to GNOME 3, gnome-session fails to start normally. Whenever I login on gdm3, I immediately get an error message saying that gnome-session failed to load and I only get an x-term window after pressing OK. GNOME session, GNOME-failsafe or System default session all lead to the same problem. I do not have a .xsession file in my user directory and I am relying on the systems defaults to load gnome-session. However, .xsession-errors contains the following after login: /etc/gdm3/Xsession: Beginning session setup... /etc/gdm3/Xsession: Executing gnome-session failed, will try to run x-terminal-emulator The odd thing is that when I type gnome-session in the xterm window I get after login, it seems to load fine and it starts the various GNOME components normally (gnome-settings-daemon, gnome-shell, etc). I'd be happy to give more details but I'm not sure exactly where to look. Bug#645429: gnome-settings-daemon segfaults on startup
This path fixes it for me. gnome-settings-daemon no longer crashes. Thanks Vince! But unfortunately gnome-session still doesn't start when I select Gnome from gdm3. Instead, if I start it from the fallback xterm window, it works and seems to load everything normally. Admittedly this may be a different problem than the one I initially reported. -- Nico

If it solves your issue it means the slowness is the result of the fsync() that dpkg is doing. And I heard it multiple times that btrfs was not very efficient when you are doing lots of fsync() but I am afraid there's not much we can do to improve this if we want to keep the reliabily of dpkg in general. I didn't know before about eatmydata but it indeed completely solves my issue! dist-upgrades are like a hundred times faster. So I guess the problem is really that the multiple fsync() in dpkg won't work efficiently with btrfs, which is a shame! It makes it almost impossible to use btrfs on / with Debian. Bug#635993: dpkg is very slow with btrfs filesystem
Package: dpkg Version: 1.16.0.3 Severity: normal Hello, I have a btrfs filesystem on /, and I experience an extreme slowness when updating or installing packages, presumably due to dpkg's way to write or unpack files. As a consequence, any kind of dist-upgrade takes a very long time and the system's load goes pretty high during that process. Simplistic tests involving tar show that the disk is able to produce throughputs that are about 30x higher than the ones I observe when dpkg is unpacking files (60MB/s vs. 2MB/s). I have tried a couple workarounds but they didn't change anything: using dpkg with --force-unsafe-io or mounting / with nodatacow. I know that there has been some debate about dpkg / btrfs in the past, but what I experience would tend to show that things are not solved. Bug#595458: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?). [btrfs]
Hello and thanks for your reply. See my answers below. On 09/15/2010 10:30 AM, Alexander Kurtz wrote: * grub-pc 1.98_20100602-1 This version make grub-probe work with / on btrfs[1]. Note that this does not mean GRUB can boot from btrfs, you'll still need a separate boot partition. Also note that currently only the single-device case is supported. I have: ii grub-common 1.98+20100804-4 ii grub-pc 1.98+20100804-4 So these versions are supposed to work with btrfs. * btrfs-tools 0.19-11 This version adds initramfs integration[2]. Without this package your initramfs will simply not contain the btrfs kernel module so the kernel won't be able to mount the root fs. I have: btrfs-tools: Installed: 0.19+20100601-3 Candidate: 0.19+20100601-3 This is the latest available on sid. * klibc-utils 1.5.18-1 This version adds support for btrfs to the `/usr/lib/klibc/bin/fstype' program[3]. This is needed for example if you use cryptsetup to encrypt your root fs. klibc-utils: Installed: 1.5.20-1 Candidate: 1.5.20-1 Note that I do not use cryptsetup. You'll probably already have all these packages installed in the required versions, but please re-check. OK. As mentioned above GRUB does not really support btrfs (otherwise you wouldn't need a separate /boot partition). However it should support correctly writing the root device into `/boot/grub/grub.cfg'. Bug#552271: tapping and two-finger scrolling have stopped working
Thanks a lot, this was indeed the reason why I lost these settings! I realized that since gsynaptics was also installed on my system, I had a Touchpad item in the Preferences menu, and because of that I didn't look at the GNOME Mouse menu. Thanks a lot for your help. I wonder if this is expected behavior that GNOME overrides the settings from xorg.conf but it is indeed what happened. Nico On 10/28/2009 11:42 PM, EspeonEefi wrote: Package: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics Severity: normal I just looked into loss of synaptics custom configuration myself, and I think I may have found the reason. Are you by any chance running GNOME? gnome-settings-daemon 2.28, which was first introduced into unstable on October 22, adds a new Touchpad tab to the Mouse preferences dialog. That tab allows you to set whether to Enable mouse clicks with touchpad (default to off), whether to set Scrolling to Disabled, Edge scrolling, or Two-finger scrolling (default to Edge scrolling), and whether to Enable horizontal scrolling (default to off). It looks like gnome-settings-daemon is using those settings and clobbering any settings you might have set through HAL or xorg.conf. If that is indeed the reason for your problem, then the question is whether this is a bug with gnome-settings-daemon, that it clobbers these settings. -- Nico -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Apart from temperature and I/O information (which both have their plugin), I see no relevant SMART information that can be plotted with smart_ plugin. Bug#415670: severity grave ?
The severity should be maintained to grave because it renders the program completely unusable for several people. I had to downgrade postfix because there was no way to make it work with version 2.3.8-2 as soon as it started trying to do TLS. The errors were the same as described previously. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#408356: manpages-fr-extra: Error for the description of %c and %C options in man(1) find
Package: manpages-fr-extra Version: 20061210 Severity: normal Hi, In the find.1 manpage, %c and %C options are translated with exactly the same phrase as %t and %T, whereas it should include a description about the fact that %c and %C reflect the file's _status_ modification time, and not only the file modification time. This is also true for the -ctime option, which could include a precision about this. Package: munin-node Version: 1.2.0-1 Severity: wishlist A new wildcard auto plugin appeared in munin-node, allowing users to monitor the S.M.A.R.T counters on their hard drives (smart_).
