Unfortunately, simply reverting the .symbols change is not enough, as
dpkg-gensymbols is passed -c4 option which makes freerdp FTBFS due to
 newly added symbols.

What do you suggest? Lowering -c4 to -c3 to ignore the symbols change?
Adjusting the patch to flag the recently added functions as static?

I think changing the patch is the way to go.

Agreed in reverting it for now.

Also, why was #659208 not closed when it was applied? Why was its added
file not fixed to use the same indentation as the rest of os-prober?
This seems badly handled all around.

I didn't close it because not the full patch has been applied;

The patch needs to be reworked to work with awk and also follow the
indenting code rules of os-prober (my fault in not catching it). Once
it is done we can apply it again.

I do recommend a separate /usr to anyone. It's *not* safe to say that,
and I know many people that agree with me. To me, it has, and still is,
the best choice. You have no rights to arbitrary decide what should
be/was/will be the recommended configuration. Your choice is not more
valid than mine, and (computer) science isn't about majorities anyway.

Sure but Debian Installer defaults are. End point.

In most general cases nowadays, we *do* have huge disks. Just have a
look into what's available in the marketplace. If you lack space in one
of the default partitions, you can resize using LVM anyway.

New users will think LVM is something to eat with bread or similar. This is
mostly as if I starting to try to convince to use Awesome WM as default
desktop install because I think it is more user-friendly (and it is, for my
type of use, but not for general use).

I do think you ought to stop to try to push your personal opinion too
hard... it is clear on this thread that most people do not agree with you
so lets go ahead and move topic.

It's also a mini netboot image which is the domain of the debian-boot

There's no release of installer yet, since squeeze, thus this still

Hi, various regressions have happened lately. make build_all doesn't
get around this issue any more. Also, changing udeb sources doesn't
 work anymore, USE_UDEBS_FROM=unstable make build_netboot.

Please tell us about those regressions. Regarding the
USE_UDEBS_FROM=unstable I think it is due the KERNELVERSION value set to
2.6.32... more bellow.

I've ended up having to implement a couple different ugly workarounds
to keep my testing snapshot builds going while various things change.
I've had enough frustration dealing with those that I've decided to
come up with a real solution.

The core issue is that KERNELIMAGEVERSION is a hardcoded value in the
arch config files, so its currently stuck at squeeze's version. Thus,
the solution is simply to parse that value from known package info
 instead.

I understand your frustation however we have the KERNELVERSION specified in
the architecture due technical reasons.

The installer itself, sometimes, need modifications or fixes to be able to
handle newer kernel versions so the version that is hard-coded on those is
the version that is supported by the installer. It is not only a matter of
recompile installer against the new kernel (sometimes this works by this is
not guaranteed). Another important point is that there are architectures
that use different kernels depending on the subarch (e.g armel uses iop32x,
kirkwood and others) and dynamically it is more difficult to handle this.

Specifically about the patch it is incomplete since it doesn't handle all
the architectures thus we can't take it.

Friendly,

About the use of xz I see no reason to use for base packages as it
has following consequences:

 * bigger memory footprint;
 * xz dependecy in host;

Specially the extra xz dependency can be problematic when using
debootstrap in non-Debian systems.

Bug#634649: os-prober does not detect Windows if there is a /boot folder in the Windows partition

Sorry, in both cases (with or without /boot folder), I get this output:

 $ LANG=C sudo os-prober
 /dev/sda1:::chain
 /dev/sda5:Ubuntu 10.10 (10.10):Ubuntu:linux

So now it has detected it but failed to handle description; the
attached patch ought to fix it.

Hello,

Talking with Colin at #debian-boot we found some possible corner cases
and then we end up doing some more changes. Please give this one a
final test so I can upload it.

Bug#605614: debian-installer: Ability to configure remote syslog

Oh, and just to clarify: I'll be using both the -L and -R options in
this case, so what will happen is that you'll get local log entries
until such time as the network is configured and both local and remote
 log entries after that.

Very nice addition :-) this will make life much easier for development
as well so you can use it to monitor a virtual machine and so on.
Nice!

Bug#635035: [s390] doesn't has nbd module available

2011-07-21 Thread Otavio Salvador
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.39-3
Severity: wishlist
Tags: d-i

Currently there're a development of partman-nbd for integration into
Debian Installer and we started pushing the required changes to
integrate it. Regarding kernel support, s390 is the only missing
architecture.

This bug is more a request for comments then a request. We have two
possible ways of fixing this bug:

 * enabling nbd for s390;
 * documenting into installation manual that s390 lacks it;

Either way works for me while the first seems the easier and avoids a
divergion regarding feature sets.

Thoughts?

I wasn't able to install debian 6 using netinst image and USB stick.

Please run the installer from USB stick and when it hangs, copy the
/var/log/syslog into the pendrive or another one so we can have a clue
about where and why it hangs.

Bug#626820: busybox httpd is crippled: no cgi, no auth-md5, no encode url string

For asking the crypto password from within linuxrc, I need a minimal web
server which is able to run cgi scripts. The cgi script will unlock the
crypted root partition (using cryptsetup luksOpen) and the system can
 continue booting.

Since the initrd should be kept small and busybox is already in initrc (for
running the linuxrc script), using the busybox http is obvious. But that for
it needs to support cgi and encoding/decoding.

Is it something going to be put onto Debian itself? If not, it would
be better to it to be done while customizing Debian for the project
specially because it won't be the only change most probably.

I do not know whether this will go into Debian someday. I'm currently
building this for my own needs. But if it is for interest for inclusion
into Debian, I'm happy to support this.

In this case I think it is better to not enable it into default
busybox and you do it locally until you get something usable and
propose it to get into Debian.

Will do.  However, even if it works with current debian-installer, it
seems worth fixing in stable's debian-installer.

Let's do it step by step. First we need to confirm it works with our
current installer, next we check what would be required to do to get
it fixed on stable and then we ponder if it is worth or not :-)

I just reverted it. Ben, on IRC, has warned me about bootloaders that
still depends on those symlinks to work. Currently GRUB and EXTLINUX
doesn't but others still do.

So currently we can't change this default yet.

Dunno. I'll talk to Jim about it.

No, getopts can't deal with long options, which Kickstart requires.

problems due to dns caches, additionally there are problems with dnssec too.

+1 to Miguel suggestion. I was indeed thinking about the same when
 looking at choose-mirror bugs.

grml.org has been doing this, but they are appearantly not too happy with

Yes. I share your view Holger.

Using cdn on my laptop I had problems with some broken mirrors. So it
really needs a good way of checking to be used by default.

heh.

What Anton wants is to know whether X is currently at the front or not.
And you can't rely on DISPLAY being set (since you could be from sudo su

Remmina can not be used to manage vRDP servers. Since almost all of the
 servers
I use are running in a VM with vrdp this is really annoying,

FreeRDP on testing ought to be working for for you. Please give it a try.

Another option is to suggest that the quiet option passed to the
kernel doesn't suppress messages related to video mode in case the
video mode doesn't exist. This would then be a kernel bug.

Anyone with an advice about this?

IMHO this is a kernel bug. Even with the quiet option the kernel
should not suppress messages the user absolutely needs to see to be
able to proceed. Also AFAIUI this issue is not d-i specific.

Yes. I agree that this is a kernel issue.

Reassigning according.

Dropped xsane from gnome-desktop for next upload.

We will try to not update kernel udebs for rc2 except if something

Does this mean that everyone owning a Cherry keyboard will not be able to
install Debian 6 until version 6.0.1 comes out?

Yes. For 6.0.1 it will be fixed.

 IMHO this _is_ kinda critical.

Cherry is one of the world's oldest keyboard manufacturers. The Cherry
homepage even says that in Germany over half of office desks are equipped
 with Cherry keyboards...

This is indeed an important issue but I do not qualify it as critical
since it has been found just recently and since Alpha1 it seems nobody
has found the issue...

Agreed for me. Any objection from others (otavio, joeyh...)?

Depending on the size changes it can break the KDE CD. Except that it
would be OK for me.
