Bug#709566: RM request

2013-06-06 Thread Paul Cupis

firestarter has been dead upstream for a long time and there appears to
be no-one taking over/continuing development. Please remove this package
from the archive.

Last upstream release - 1.0.3 (2005)

Thanks and regards,
Paul Cupis

Bug#671769: Traffic validation

fixed 671769 1.0.3-9

Thank you for your further investigation.

The version of firestarter in Debian stable was release when 2.0.0.0/8
was still unallocated IP space, and so it is blocked by the 'reserved
addresses' part of the application.

Current versions in the development version of Debian do not have this
specific issue.

You can resolve this on your system by downloading the following file:

http://www.team-cymru.org/Services/Bogons/bogon-bn-nonagg.txt

and using it to replace

/etc/firestarter/non-routables

on your system.

The -10 version doesn't do anything regarding what configuration
firestarter loads/implements.

Just to be clear - are you saying that the firewall is now correctly
configured (and protecting your machine) or that the Active Connections
part of firestarter is now working (or both), please?

I don't have that rule on my box here. Could you send me the contents of
your /etc/firestarter directory so I can load up your local

I don't think this is related, I think this may have stopped working a
few kernel versions ago, or at least become intermittant.

Thanks.

Can you please provide the output of "iptables -nL" (as root) once you
have started firestarter?

I am seeing firestarter create the firewall properly under 2.6.37 as
under earlier kernels.

It looks like this bug was introduced by changes to the DHCP packaging
and configuration directories. I will look to adapt firestarter to be
compatible with this change.

and the configuration broke?

If not can you confirm the exact steps to reproduce this, please?

David wrote:

This has happened to me in two different computers running sid, so I assume that "grave" is the correct severity. The problem started IIRC on Monday
23 Feb 2009, so it may come from an upgrade in sid in Monday or Sunday.

firestarter does not currently build in pure unstable due to the what
looks like an ongoing gnome transition to gnome 2.24.

This quite possibly the cause of this bug - as soon as the gnome
transition gets further along and firestarter can be built in pure
unstable, I will be able to test this and upload a fixed version as
appropriate.

Upstream are considering dumping 0.99.11 due to a bug in the OSPF code -
0.99.12 is due to be released in the coming weeks with the fix (or can
be patched etc).

the package in contrib.

The depends is provided by a compiled kernel module package - the module
source is in main but it must be compiled/installed (m-a or similar) to
match the installed kernel.

I will have a look to see how other packages deal with this.

Bug#418156: /var/run/l2tpns/acct not created by package

2007-04-07 Thread Paul Cupis
Package: l2tpns
Version: 2.1.21-1
Severity: normal

The default configuration of the l2tpns package contains:

set accounting_dir "/var/run/l2tpns/acct"

however this directory is not created by the package or the maintenance
scripts - by default, therefore, l2tpns will complain about not being
able to store it's own accounting files.

I believe either the package should ship this directory, or the
maintenance scripts should create it. In the case of the init script, I
imagine this would have to be by parsing startup-config.

It seems that the Etch package for Firestart is indeed broken, because
it happened to me on my system. I just apt-pinned it from unstable
into testing, and purged it, and it purged firestarter from my system
fine.

I had only installed it once, but I never got it to purge right. After
my biweekly cleaning of cruft packages I decided to just report a bug
on it, and it seems this bug was already reported (And, to an extent,
solved). But I just thought I'd throw my two cents in there for anyone
else having the same problem as I did on Debian Etch.

This bug is confirmed in version 1.0.3-1.3 which will be the version
released with Etch. The freeze for Etch means that the fixed package
1.0.3-2 will not make it in.

A bug as annoying as that should still fall through the freeze though,
no? I thought that bug fixes were still allowed to pass through the
freeze?

I have already requested that the release team consider 1.0.3-2 for
Etch, on the basis of the outdated BOGONS file (non-routables) which
already affect users of the package. This request was denied as we are
too close to the release (hopefully over Easter).

See http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2007/03/msg00773.html for my
request and the reply from the release team. Only fixes for
release-critical bugs are being allowed to pass Etch now, as is proper
for the freeze.

Bug#414000: firestarter: desktop file is in wrong location - does not show on menu

2007-03-08 Thread Paul Cupis
Package: firestarter
Version: 1.0.3-2
Severity: normal

The firestarter package includes a .desktop file to include the program
in the GUI menu system. The current package installs this file to
/usr/share/gnome/apps/Internet/firestarter.desktop but the file should
be installed to /usr/share/applications/firestarter.desktop to work with
GNOME and KDE.

First of all, can you reproduce the bug with current packages? If so,
can you please provide a trace of the reproduction (copy of the shell
output, running the commands, output from apt-get etc) and also a
listing of the files in /etc/network and /etc/firestarter.

If you could then provide the shell output from /etc/init.d/networking
which generates the error you've mentioned, and also a copy of your
/etc/network/interfaces file, please?

Could you also just give me the output of running `apt-cache policy
firestarter`, please?

Package: gnome-ppp
Followup-For: Bug #258064

Has there been any progress since 2004 which might allow gnome-ppp and
resolvconf to co-exist on a Debian system, please?

eagle-usb-modules is Provide'd by eagle-usb-modules-`uname -r` which
is built from the eagle-usb-modules-source package using
module-assistant.

I think this Recommends is okay as it is?

The packages are not incompatible, it is just the use of them. Both of
the packages use iptables directly.

guarddog will re-run it's rules whenever an interfaces goes down or
comes up. If the user or another application add/removes rules after
guarddog has run, it will not stop them.

The scenario you describe suggests that firestarter, or the user, is
deleting guarddog rules or changing the policy on the interfaces, not
something guardddog will protect against (nor should it).

2006-10-07 Thread Paul Cupis
Package: policycoreutils
Version: 1.30.29-1
Severity: normal
File: /sbin/fixfiles

/sbin/fixfiles contains a bash-ism (let foo=bar) on lines 213 and 230,
but states /bin/sh in it's #! line.

Changing the first line to /bin/bash resolves this and allows you to run
fixfiles on a system where /bin/sh is not linked to bash.

If you create a user-defined protocol with guarddog, it will allow the
specified ports to be used to/from you machines IP (or the created
zones) as defined.

Can you please use your attached rc.firewall and enable logging, and
then pass me the kernel/firewall logs from attempts to use
zeroconf/avahi with the guarddog firewall?

Well yes, of course. My patch was an attempt as a small patch to resolve
the (symptoms of) the reported bug, not a reworking of the whole
package. The maintainer can decide how they want to handle it (I do not
intend to NMU with this patch atm).

Thanks.

Are you modifying the rc.firewall by hand and then re-running it? This
will not work, you have to use the guarddog program to create an
approriate rc.firewall script.

If mDNS is not listed as a pre-defined protocol, you can add custom
ports using the advanced section of the guarddog application.

Yes, the "arch: any" seems to be carried over from version <5 when it
was a C/C++ program.

I'll test a build on a non-native machine and see if it works - if it
does then I will make this package "arch: all".

If you remove guarddog, it's config will remain and be started (as the
init script and the rc.firewall config file remain.

If you purge it, the init scripts will be deleted and it will not start
any more.

This is not possible, guarddog just creates a file /etc/rc.firewall
which specifies how iptables/ipchains is configured.

or you could enable the traceroute protocol. Judging by the TTL=1, it
looks like some form of traceroute.
