PLEASE REMOVE PYCENTRAL FROM DEBIAN!
1) It breaks the file system (all the crap under /usr/share do not belong there)
2) It breaks custom variations of handling versions of executables FOR NO REASON
3) It isn't needed, all other major distributions do fine without and Debian
worked
for decades without it. It just adds complexity and a source of errors.

This bug will be closed without resolve and the two most prominent reasons for
using Debian (stability and simplicity)
are thrown out the window. Thank you.

On my system the symlinks, as per alternatives, looks like this:
/usr/bin/python - /etc/alternatives/python - /usr/bin/python2.4

This looks like an upstream bug.
They primarily try the os.readlink (line 142) path name instead of executing
default Python and looking at sys.version.
They should rely solely on sys.version, it's 100% reliable, there's no need to
check the path name at all.

Anyways, this forces users to denounce the alternatives system, which is not
good.

Bug#329753: python2.3-mysqldb: Does not work with MySQL v4.1

2005-09-23 Thread Peter Gebauer
Package: python2.3-mysqldb
Version: 1.2.1c3-1
Severity: normal

The current package is linked to libmysqlclient12 which does not work
with MySQL 4.1 or higher.
According to upstream MySQLdb developers it should work with 4.1 and
possibly even 5.0, all you have to do is provide a python2.3-mysqldb
linked against libmysqlclient14 (and optionally libmysqlclient15).

I don't know whether or not the newer MySQL client libraries are
backwards compatible, but the 14 lib works with 4.0 servers.

Bug#328412: wget: Missing vital documentation

2005-09-15 Thread Peter Gebauer
Package: wget
Version: 1.10-1
Severity: minor

There's some documentation at
http://www.gnu.org/software/wget/manual/wget.html
which is really useful. It contains many examples of usage and
information on how to format URL's, information that is not included in
the man page.

I was considering filing an upstream bug since I think most of this
information belongs in the man page, but we could just as well include
that document in /usr/share/doc/ for the wget package.

As you can imagine this is just a minor inconvencience, but it would
make the package just a tad more useful.

Bug#325714: python2.3-ipython: Segfault when entering any command.

2005-08-30 Thread Peter Gebauer
Package: python2.3-ipython
Version: 0.6.15-1
Severity: grave

Typing any command and pressing enter results in a segfault.
Please tell me if you need any additional information.

Here's the ldd for my Python 2.3 binary:

cd $MY_VARtab will complete to cd \$MY_VARIABLE and escape the
dollar character.
You don't want it escaped, you want to use it. Also, it doesn't need to
expand variables, just leave them as they are.
ls $MY_VARtab will not complete at all.

Bug#303690: dict: Exits with error.

2005-04-08 Thread Peter Gebauer
Package: dict
Version: 1.9.15-1
Severity: normal

apt-get install dict

No dictd installed, when trying to run dict it exits with the following
error:

 Can't locate AppConfig/Std.pm in @INC (@INC contains:
 /pkg/perl/lib/5.6.1/i386_linux24 /pkg/perl/lib/5.6.1
 /pkg/perl/lib/site_perl/5.6.1/i386_linux24

 /pkg/perl/bin/dict line 13.
 BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /pkg/perl/bin/dict line 13.

I guess there's a depency missing for some Perl library.
When checking closer I see that the only library with AppConfig is
libappconfig-perl, but it has no AppConfig/Std.pm. Possibly some version
breakage?

Bug#303691: python-mode: Emacs hangs while in Python-mode.

2005-04-08 Thread Peter Gebauer
Package: python-mode
Version: 4.70-1
Severity: important

I must restart Emacs many times per hour when using the python-mode
package because Emacs hangs and does not respond at all.
Usualy, the message Full parse forced (or similar) preceeds the
meltdown.

This might not be related to this package, but so far only python-mode
does this.
