Are you sure you mean the net_boot_ image here or are you talking about
 the net_inst_ CD?

  http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/etch-di-rc2/alpha/iso-cd and they all
booted with the same error (I even tried burning to different discs and
  with different burn-speed).
After loading the kernel and the initrd, an endless list of messages

We discovered this issue yesterday too and it has already been fixed in
the CD build scripts. The current _daily_ images should already be OK and
so will the official Etch images be.

It would be great if you could check this.

 Cheers,
 FJP

I downloaded and burned the daily net_inst CD of 2007/03/20 this morning. Just
now I booted with this CD and the installer started as it should.
Installation succeeded without any problems whatsoever (I did not file
another installation report).

Peter

Because of the 2 video-cards in the machine, I had to boot the installer with
the option
video=atyfb:off. This was clearly documented in the installation manual.
No problems encountered during the install.

Comments/Problems:

Just after installation, at the first reboot, the machine tried to boot from
its cdrom instead of the first harddisk. Since the cd was no longer present,
this failed. I switched the computer off and on again; this time it booted
from the first harddisk. This also happened on Sarge and at that time there
was no solution for this (it is not really that much of an issue).

Comments/Problems:

After installing everything for the Desktop task in tasksel, I
manually had to install the following packages:
xserver-xorg-input-mouse
xserver-xorg-input-kbd
xserver-xorg-video-glint

Those packages were not present and this prevented xorg from starting.
After installing those extra packages, I had to modify
/etc/X11/xorg.conf to have xorg use
the glint video-driver instead of the apm-driver.

Bug#301504: Debian Installer RC 3 on PARISC

2005-03-31 Thread Peter Van Loock
I already tried this but still got the 'Kernel panic' message. But, it HAS
something to do with it. I doubled the initial ram-disk size set in palo
(something like lilo on i386) and I no longer got the message about
'incomplete write'. I just got 'Kernel panic. No init found.' Probably some
other messages just scrolled by and I did not have the time to read them;
scrolling happens in just the top line, so you immediately loose the previous
lines.
Therefore I connected an HP Terminal (700/96; brings back memories :) and
changed the console to the serial port.
Now the machine booted just fine. So it took me TWO things to change:
-doubling the ramdisk_size to 32768
-changing from framebuffer to serial console

Probably de-activating the framebuffer could also help, but I tried the
parameter debian_installer/framebuffer=false, and this still brought up the
framebuffer console.

Installation has just started, I'll keep you informed.

Peter

  the framebuffer console.

Sorry, indeed a typo in my last e-mail.
I DID use debian-installer (with the minus sign instead of the underscore).

Processor: PA-Risc 1.1d - PA7100 LC (PCX-L)
Memory: 64 MB
Root Device: SCSI, /dev/sda
Root Size/partition table: 625 MB
Output of lspci: N/A

Base System Installation Checklist:

Initial boot worked:[O] after ramdisk_size=32768 and console=ttyS0
Configure network HW: [O]
Config network: [O]
Detect CD: [O]
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [O]
Create file systems:[O]
Mount partitions: [O]
Install base system:[O]
Install boot loader:[O]
Reboot: [O]

[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Comments/Problems:

Afterwards I had to modify /etc/inittab and reconfiguring console-data to get
my console back on tty0 with the correct keyboard. But that has nothing to do
with the installer.

Bug#302402: Debian Installer RC 3 on PARISC - Netboot

2005-03-31 Thread Peter Van Loock
Package: installation-reports

Debian-installer-version: RC3
uname -a: Linux palinux 2.6.8-2-32-smp #1 SMP Mon Feb 7 22:19:10 EST 2005
parisc GNU/Linux
Date: Thu Mar 31 18:29:15 CEST 2005
Method: Booted boot.img from bootp-server

Machine: Hewlett Packard 9000-712/60
Processor: PA-Risc 1.1d - PA7100 LC (PCX-L)
Memory: 64 MB
Root Device: SCSI, /dev/sda
Root Size/partition table:

Disk /dev/sda: 1050 MB, 1050347520 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 127 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 4 32098+ f0 Linux/PA-RISC boot
/dev/sda2 5 14 80325 83 Linux

/dev/sda5 * 15 118 835348+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 119 127 72261 82 Linux swap

sda2 = /boot
sda5 = /

Output of lspci: N/A

Base System Installation Checklist:

Initial boot worked:[E] OK after changing ramdisk_size
Configure network HW: [O]
Config network: [O]
Detect CD: [O]
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [0]
Create file systems:[O]
Mount partitions: [O]
Install base system:[O]
Install boot loader:[O]
Reboot: [O]

[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Comments/Problems:

When booting without changing any boot-parameters, the system would hang with
as last message 'Kernel panic: no init found'. Previous messages already had
scrolled off the screen (because the scrolling takes place on the first
line).
However, I already had some experience with booting from CD (see bug report
301504), so I changed the parameter ramdisk_size to different values. I tried
this numbers:
4096 -- same problem
8192 -- same problem
16384 -- OK, installer started fine
32768 -- OK, installer started fine

I only tried these values, if you want me to search further (some values in
between), please let me know.

After that initial problem was solved, the installation went fine.

Just one remark: after every 'apt-get update' I get the following message:
connecting to mirror I chose module ipv6 relocation of symbol capable is out
of range (0x3ffeffdc in 17 bits).

Comments/Problems:

After booting from cd I get the usual boot-messages up to the message:

RAMDISK incomplete write (-28 != 32768)
Kernel panic. No init found.

I wrote the image to another cd, same result. Downloaded the image again,
wrote to another cd, same result.
