Bug#321194: flashplugin-nonfree: does not install, not matter if tar.gz package location is entered or not

2005-08-03 Thread Petri T. Koistinen
Package: flashplugin-nonfree
Severity: important

I cannot install flashplugin-nonfree because it asks
Please enter location to the local file. and it won't go even
if I press enter without entering anything there. I download the
install_flash_player_7_linux.tar.gz from Macromedia site and placed it to
/root directory. It won't install it there either.

 That's odd.. Did you specify /de/fd0 to the program too?. If that isn't the

No, I did not specify /dev/fd0.

 Could you try debian's 2.6.11 just to be sure it's not your kernel

I tried with kernel-image-2.6.11-1-k7 and effect is exactly same, nothing

2005-06-23 Thread Petri T. Koistinen
Package: hal
Version: 0.4.8-2

I am just wondering is this hal package (and more specifically hald program)
supposed to open all cdrom and dvd drives disc bays (and keep opening them
if you closed them manually) and make floppy drive tick?

If it does what it is supposed to do, why gnome package depends on hal?
I don't want to keep my drives open gathering dust and hear annoying ticking
noise from floppy drive. I got bored with floppy drive ticking already when
I used Amiga. Even then I used program that made ticking sound go away. :-)

and all drives open. I close manually, they keep opening again.

$ sudo killall hald
I close drives again and they keep being closed.

$ sudo /usr/sbin/hald
And drives open their disk bays instantly.

So I am pretty sure that hald has atleast something to do with this.

 It polls the cdrom's status on a
 regular basis, but they shouldn't open when doing this. Also hal doesn't
 access
 the floppy drive, so it's kinda weird that it would cause floppydrive ticks..

 Are you sure you don't have magicdev installed, which does actually poll the
 floppy drive iirc ?

$ dpkg -L magicdev
Package `magicdev' is not installed.

 Ok, just making sure it's indeed hal that triggers this, because quite odd..
 The floppy ticking problem also goes away when your restart hal like that ?

Floppy ticking stop when I kill hald and continue when I start hald.

 The way to use it is to turn off hal, and run it with your cdrom device names
 as arguments. For example ./test /dev/hdc /dev/hdd

I killed hald, closed drive bays, compiled and run that program. Both
drives will open their disk bay, first /dev/hdc and then /dev/hdd and
floppy drive starts ticking. All drives are empty.

Some info about drives:
$ dmesg | egrep 'hd(c|d)'

hdc: Hewlett-Packard CD-Writer Plus 8100, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdd: JLMS XJ-HD165H, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdc: ATAPI 24X CD-ROM CD-R/RW drive, 1024kB Cache, DMA

You can't for example change it back little bit slower update speed.
You have to use ctrl-c to quit program.
