Bug#1031041: firefox-esr: Please add PDF to supported MimeTypes

2023-02-10 Thread Ronny Standtke

Package: firefox-esr
Version: 102.7.0esr-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

In contrast to the default PDF applications (Evince, Okular, ...) recent
versions of Firefox are able to handle PDF with XFA forms. To be able to
open such PDF files from the usual file managers (Nautilus, Dolphin,
...) the PDF mimetypes must be added to the Firefox desktop file.

The attached patch fixes this issue.

Bug#965953: live-build: [PATCH] container hooks

2020-07-21 Thread Ronny Standtke
Package: live-build
Version: 1:20191221
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

The department I work for creates live systems for many different
schools and universities. There is so much software that is needed by
these organizations but is not available in the Debian repositories,
that we needed to integrate flatpak support, enable flatpak and install
flatpak applications during build time.

Unfortunately, this is impossible with custom hooks in the current
version of live-build, because flatpak doesn't work in simple chroot
environments. I therefore created the attached patch to live-build that
adds support for "container hooks". These hooks are executed in a simple
container created via systemd-nspawn (from the systemd-container
package). We built literally hundreds of different life systems
including flatpaks in the last months and everything works as expected.
So this patch is somewhat "battle tested".

Best regards

Ronny

This package, including it's upstream on freedesktop.org, seems to be
completely broken and out-of-date. There is an updated and improved
version on github:

Maybe it's a good idea to switch to this version?

Bug#960829: minetest-mod-homedecor: should recommend instead of depend on minetest-mod-currency

2020-05-17 Thread Ronny Standtke
Package: minetest-mod-homedecor
Version: 20190922.1-1
Severity: normal

minetest-mod-homedecor currently depends on minetest-mod-currency. But
this is unnecessary as minetest-mod-homedecor works completely fine
without minetest-mod-currency. There is only an *optional* dependency in
homedecor_gastronomy. Therefore I think the package relationship can be
changed from "Depends" to "Recommends".

Bug#940846: live-build: [PATCH] execute binary_hooks after binary_grub-efi so that it becomes possible to customize grub-efi files

2019-09-20 Thread Ronny Standtke
Package: live-build
Version: 1:20190311
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

I wanted to customize some grub-efi files with a hook. This failed
because binary_hooks is executed *before* binary_grub_efi. The attached
patch fixes this issue by executing binary_hooks after binary_grub_efi.

Best regards

Bug#939118: gnome-desktop3: add /etc/alternatives to bind mounts for thumbnailers

2019-09-01 Thread Ronny Standtke
Source: gnome-desktop3
Version: 3.33.91-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

The path /etc/alternatives must be added to the list of bwrap bind mounts
because it is needed for thumbnailers that use imagemagick (e.g. the
thumbnailer in geogebra-gnome). The attached patch fixes this issue for the
latest version in experimental.

Could you please fix this issue also in current Debian stable (buster)? We are
supporting may schools that use Debian and are now missing the thumbnails of
their GeoGebra files.

Bug#935194: xfce4-session: Xfce session fails to start when previously logged into GNOME

2019-08-22 Thread Ronny Standtke
Hi Yves-Alexis

> I don't use GNOME and am not at all knowledgeable in systemctl “user”

To be able to reproduce, analyze or even fix this issue it would be good
if you install GNOME in parallel to Xfce.

> In any case, that commands reports nothing in my Xfce session.

Yes, as I said, Xfce doesn't set the variable SESSION_MANAGER (at least
not in the systemd manager environment block, only in the standard user
environment).

> I don't really understand how it's possible. A new Xsession should be run

I think this is a feature of systemd. I only found some sparse infos in
the manpage. See here:
https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/systemctl.html (search
for Environment Commands).

> SESSION_MANAGER is definitely set here:

Yes, the variable is set in the standard user environment, but (as I
said above) not in the systemd manager environment block which is
persistent across logins.

Bug#935194: xfce4-session: Xfce session fails to start when previously logged into GNOME

2019-08-21 Thread Ronny Standtke
> I have no idea why SESSION_MANAGER is already set when you start Xfce
> the second time, but it looks like a bug in either gdm or gnome.

As I said, the variable SESSION_MANAGER will be set when you log into
GNOME (or GNOMEish desktop environments like Cinnamon or MATE). The
variable is added to the systemd manager environment block. You can
verify this by calling

systemctl --user show-environment | grep SESSION_MANAGER

The systemd manager environment block is persistent across subsequent
logins (not reboots), even when using different desktop environments.
This is implemented in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/95dbus_update-activation-env

As I said, I am not very familiar with all the details around the
SESSION_MANAGER variable, but it seems like it is only set by GNOMEish
desktop environments. Even Xfce itself doesn't set the variable. It only
checks the variable and fails to start if it is set, which is happening
here.

> Just ignoring the fact that a manager might be running doesn't look sound.
> Can you get in touch with gnome and gdm people about this?

OK, adding pkg-gnome-maintain...@alioth-lists.debian.net to CC.

Bug#935194: xfce4-session: Xfce session fails to start when previously logged into GNOME

2019-08-20 Thread Ronny Standtke
Package: xfce4-session
Version: 4.12.1-6
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

When you log into GNOME (or Cinnamon or MATE) the environment variable
SESSION_MANAGER will be set. If you then log out and try logging into
Xfce it will fail. You will simply be catapulted back to the gmd login
screen. The following error message will appear in the system journal
(the PID may vary of course):
/usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[5992]: xfce4-session: Another session
manager is already running

This is implemented here:
https://salsa.debian.org/xfce-team/desktop/xfce4-session/blob/debian/master/xfce4-session/main.c#L96

I am not very familiar with all the details concerning this variable but
the attached patch is a workaround that unsets the variable
SESSION_MANAGER in
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/55xfce4-session. This way it is possible to first
log into GNOME, log out and then log into Xfce.

Bug#934701: live-boot: fixed handling of live media device in case of persistence

2019-08-13 Thread Ronny Standtke
Package: live-boot
Version: 1:20190614

When using persistence, the live media mount point is moved from
/run/live/medium to /run/live/persistence/$something.

This is probably unintended and makes it much harder for third-party
tools to find the original live medium. The attached patch fixes this issue.

Bug#927426: libreoffice-common: data loss because AutoRecovery information is stored in /tmp

2019-04-19 Thread Ronny Standtke
Package: libreoffice-common
Version: 1:6.1.5-3
Severity: normal

LibreOffice saves its AutoRecovery information in its "Temporary files" path
which is in Debian per default "/tmp".
This leads to data loss when the system crashes or has a power outage
because
/tmp in Debian is deleted at every reboot.
(This is not just a theoretical possibility but our users already run into
exactly this situation.)

Therefore, the default value for the "Temporary files" path of LibreOffice
should be something persistent, e.g.
~/.config/libreoffice/4/user/tmp

Thanks
Ronny

I create live systems with huge includes (read-only virtual machines)
and noticed that the chroot_includes step takes a very long time.
Looking at the source code I noticed that chroot_includes uses several
tar calls for this step. I replaced this code block with a simple rsync
call which is much more efficient in both space and time (see attached
patch).

Bug#923046: flatpak segfaults in live-build hook

2019-02-23 Thread Ronny Standtke
Package: flatpak
Version: 1.2.3-1~bpo9+1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

We are providing schools with customized Debian Live images. Usually
they are a combination of Debian stable and some selected backports
(LibreOffice, Linux kernel, ...). Now we have some schools that really
want to use the current versions of GIMP and Kdenlive. Both packages are
not up to date in stretch-backports, but are available as flatpaks on
flathub, see:
https://flathub.org/apps/details/org.gimp.GIMP
https://flathub.org/apps/details/org.kde.kdenlive

Now that flatpak 1.2.3 has arrived in stretch-backports, I wanted to
integrate the GIMP and Kdenlive flatpak packages in our Debian Live
builds. Unfortunately, calling flatpak in a live-build hook fails with
some dbus and polkit error messages and then flatpak segfaults. Here is
an example that just tries to add the flathub repo:

cat config/hooks/live/add_flathub.chroot
#!/bin/sh
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub
https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

After adding this hook live-build fails with the following error messages:
---
P: Begin executing hooks...

(flatpak remote-add:9603): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **:
g_dbus_connection_register_object: assertion 'G_IS_DBUS_CONNECTION
(connection)' failed

** (flatpak remote-add:9603): CRITICAL **:
polkit_authority_register_authentication_agent_with_options_sync:
assertion 'POLKIT_IS_AUTHORITY (authority)' failed

Segmentation fault
E: config/hooks/live/add_flathub.chroot failed (exit non-zero). You
should check for errors.
P: Begin unmounting filesystems...
---

I tried prefixing the call to flatpak with dbus-run-session, but it
still fails.

Bug#886009: live-config: race condition between live-config and systemd-tmpfiles-setup

2018-01-01 Thread Ronny Standtke
Package: live-config
Version: 5.20170112+deb9u1
Severity: important

I frequently see Debian Live based systems not starting up correctly
with the following error messages in the journal:
live-config[863]: /bin/live-config: 154: /bin/live-config: cannot open
/tmp/live-config.pipe: No such file
live-config[863]: /bin/live-config: 155: /bin/live-config: cannot create
/tmp/live-config.pipe: Interrupted system call

Looking at the code and error message it is clearly a race condition
between live-config and systemd-tmpfiles-setup.
This bug can be fixed by adding "systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service" to the
"After=" configuration in live-config.service.

The attached patch (against the current version in git) fixes this issue.

Bug#885449: scribus: German translation in desktop file is missing

2017-12-27 Thread Ronny Standtke
> Right, I guess I can forward this upstream quite easily.

Cool, thanks!

> Is "Publishing" really the best german word for this?
> I'm not a German speaking person, but it feels very English-y to me…

Yes, we borrowed this word from English, see:

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop-Publishing

The English language borrows also some words from German, so this is
just fine. :-)

Bug#884460: gtkhash: every second start the list of hash functions is empty

2017-12-15 Thread Ronny Standtke
Package: gtkhash
Version: 1.1-1~bpo9+1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I created a local backport of gtkhash 1.1 for Debian 9 (so that we also
have caja-gtkhash).
Every second start, the list of hash functions in gtkhash is empty.
When this happens, I see the following value/key pair in dconf:

hash-functions=@as []

... instead of the usual one:

hash-functions=['MD5', 'SHA1', 'SHA256', 'CRC32']

This makes the whole package very difficult to use for our users
(teachers and students) who expect a software package to work everytime.

It looks like this is a regression as we can't reproduce this behavior
with version 0.7.0 from Debian stable (but there we unfortunately don't
have caja-gtkhash).

Bug#877776: live-boot: fixed read-only mode with overlayfs

Bug#877776: live-boot: fixed read-only mode with overlayfs

2017-11-21 Thread Ronny Standtke
Hi all

> Can you be a bit more verbose in your explanation?

OK, I try:

live-boot in Debian 9 uses overlayfs per default instead of aufs in
Debian 8. One difference between aufs and overlayfs is that aufs can
operate directly on the file system root but overlayfs needs certain
subdirectories (rw and work) on the file system root. Here is a quote
from https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/filesystems/overlayfs.txt:

The "workdir" needs to be an empty directory on the same filesystem as
upperdir.

This fact was partly taken care of in live-boot in the script
9990-misc-helpers.sh, see here:
https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/debian-live/live-boot.git/tree/components/9990-misc-helpers.sh#n1335

The important part here is the postfix "/rw" in the option
"upperdir=${unionrw}/rw"

Unfortunately, these subtleties of overlayfs were not taken into account
when using it as a lower layer (when you add the boot option
"persistence-read-only"). This is what my patch fixes.

> How can we reproduce the problem?

Create a Debian Live system with a persistence partition, use it first
in normal "read-write" mode and change some files and settings. Then
reboot and use the boot option "persistence-read-only". You will see
that non of your previous changes are visible because the persistence
partition got mounted the wrong way (without the "/rw" postfix).

> Why is your patch fixing the issue?

Because it correctly mounts the persistence partition in the overlayfs
case including the necessary "/rw" postfix.

Cheers

Ronny

Bug#871780: live-build: support for apt-transport-https

(sorry for double-posting, forgot to keep the bug in cc)

Hi

Thanks for the suggestion! It looks like the '--debootstrap-options'
switch was already implemented in jessie but was undocumented. Now it's
even in the lb_config manpage. Cool.

Unfortunately, it still doesn't work with the additional switch. The
build process ignores/errs on https archive with error messages similar
to this one:

Attached is a simple script to reproduce the error above. Just create an

Could you reproduce the issue? Is there another command line switch,

Bug#867539: live-build: nicer mksquashfs

2017-07-07 Thread Ronny Standtke
Package: live-build
Version: 1:20170609

I am building somewhat larger Debian Live based systems in a tmpfs. Even
though the machines are quite powerful they become unresponsive to the
point of being completely unusable during the mksquashfs step.

Attached is a patch that fixes this problem by running mksquashfs with
"nice". I tested it on many machines for several weeks now and
everything kept running smoothly.

Bug#853805: unknown-horizons: Use .png icons instead of .xpm

I would suggest to use the provided svg icon instead of creating many
png files with different resolutions.
This saves space and looks crisp everywhere.
We only have to add a simple link (see attached patch).

It looks like you forgot to enable 0003-enable-CONFIG_AUFS_EXPORT.patch in

package it correctly compiles and installs the kernel module via dkms.

Bug#827669: minetest-mod-mobf: packaging buggy/incomplete

2016-06-19 Thread Ronny Standtke
Package: minetest-mod-mobf
Version: 2.5.0-1
Severity: important
Tags: patch

The minetest-mod-mobf binary package contains lots of xcf and blend
files and even the directory
/usr/share/games/minetest/mods/mobf/debian/. This makes the package
unnecessary large and
even buggy because in minetest a mobf called "debian" is shown that of
course doesn't work
but produces the error message:

The attached patch fixes the issue. The confusing part is that the patch
shouldn't be
necessary as the manpage of dh_install reads:
--
You rarely need to use this option, since dh_install automatically looks
for files in

This file is identical to /usr/share/applications/clamtk.desktop which
is already
installed by the package clamtk which is a dependency of clamtk-gnome.

The redundant desktop file doesn't seem to serve any purpose and just
creates a
double entry in the desktops application menus which is irritating to users.

It looks like the clamtk-gnome.desktop file can just be removed without
any bad
side effect.

I can confirm this problem on a Dell Latitude E5500. After booting up
all I can see are some left-scrolling remains of the text console. I can
switch to a text vt which then works normally but would really prefer to
have a working graphical desktop.

Here is some info about the PCI devices in the Dell Latitude E5500:

I can now definitely confirm that this is a regression in linux 4.3. I
just tested with linux 4.2.6 and everything works fine, even though I
also see the log message about intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler.

Any hope to get this fixed in 4.3 or do we have to wait for 4.4

Sorry, this bug is still not fixed. I still get the same error message when
trying to apt-get remove virtualbox-ext-pack.

It's strange that the error message is

VBoxExtPackHelperApp: error: Unknown option: '--forced'

but the vboxmanage option in the prerm script is '--force' (without 'd' at the
end). Could it be that vboxmanage itself is broken here?

I noticed that there is an SVG icon in the hydrogen package but it is not

Bug#794198: toppler: missing sources of binary file toppler.dat

2015-08-01 Thread Ronny Standtke
The file toppler.dat is actually an archive, like a tarball. It is not
 compiled code.

Thanks for the info, good to know. I just didn't know how to unarchive
the toppler.dat file. Is there any?

 http://toppler.sourceforge.net/repos/datafile/
This is the source for the archiver, not for toppler.dat.

Well, this repository contains all the game data in its original
editable format (Blender, GIMP, POV-Ray, PNGs, WAVs, ...). So, as far as
I interpret it, it is not just the source for the archiver program...

This would be most inconvenient. I would need to create custom source
 tarballs.

I'm not really an expert in Debian packaging but very often I have seen
foo-data packages. Maybe the toppler.dat file could be build in a
toppler-data package with it's own source tarball just containing the
files from the repository above?

What do you actually want to do ?

I wanted to have the sources of the program in an easily accessible and
editable format after checking out the debian source package of toppler.
I thought this is the meaning of a *source* package. Originally, I just
wanted to take a look at the game data to find a replacement for the
blurry desktop file icon, see my other bug report:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=794197

Cheers

Ronny

Bug#794337: audacity: please include higher resolution icon (patch included)

2015-08-01 Thread Ronny Standtke
Package: audacity
Version: 2.0.6-2
Severity: minor
Tags: patch

When using larger icons in KDE the audacity icon looks very blurry (see
left-hand side of attached picture).
KDE does not seem to use the provided SVG icon, maybe because it is in a
non-supported format. If the SVG icon is selected manually, the icon looks
completely garbled (see middle of attached picture).
Therefore I added a higher resolution icon (see attached tgz file). Now the
audacity icon looks great again (see right-hand side of attached picture).

Bug#794254: frozen-bubble: install higher resolution icons (patch included)

2015-07-31 Thread Ronny Standtke
Package: frozen-bubble
Version: 2.212-4+b1
Severity: minor
Tags: patch

The frozen-bubble icon looks quite blurry on desktops with larger icons
(e.g. GNOME) because of its low resolution (only 32x32 pixels).
I noticed that there are more icons in the source package, including a
version with higher resolution. These icons seem to have been installed
in the
past but these parts were commented out in the rules file.
I uncommented and fixed these parts of the maintainer scripts (see attached
patch). The frozen-bubble icon now looks much better...

Bug#794198: toppler: missing sources of binary file toppler.dat

2015-07-31 Thread Ronny Standtke
Package: toppler
Version: 1.1.6-2
Severity: normal

After running apt-get source toppler I expected to find all sources of
the toppler game. Unfortunately, the source package contains a big
binary blob toppler.dat even though the sources for this file
including a makefile are available here:
http://toppler.sourceforge.net/repos/datafile/

I don't know if including this file as a binary blob in the toppler
source package even conflicts with a Debian policy...

Could you change the toppler source package so that the toppler.dat file
is created from sources when building the toppler binary packages?

2015-07-31 Thread Ronny Standtke
Package: toppler
Version: 1.1.6-2
Severity: minor

The toppler icon looks very blurry because of its quite low resolution
(32x32). I noticed that in the upstream data repository there is a GIMP
file with pictures of the toppler dude with a slightly higher resolution
(40x40), see:
http://toppler.sourceforge.net/repos/datafile/dude.xcf

I used this file to created a new icon (see attachment) and copied it to
/usr/share/icons/. This looks a little better on desktops with large
icons (e.g. GNOME or KDE).

Could you include this new icon in the debian package?

Bug#790852: gespeaker crashes at startup

2015-07-21 Thread Ronny Standtke
Hi could you please attach your ~/.config/gespeaker/settings.conf file?

This file does not (yet?) exist on my system. The folder
~/.config/gespeaker/ was created but it is empty. Maybe because
gespeaker never managed to start without crashing?

Please attach here also the output of the command /usr/bin/espeak
 --voices

OK, I attached the output as a file. Btw, this crash happens after a
fresh install of Debian 8.

I just noticed that this bug is locale dependent. If I use my system
locale (de_CH.UTF-8) gespeaker crashes. If I call export LC_ALL=C;
gespeaker it doesn't crash.

Bug#789167: nvidia-legacy-304xx-alternative: alternative for libEGL is missing

2015-06-24 Thread Ronny Standtke
I am using a system based on Debian Live and constantly switch between
systems where, depending on the currently available hardware, different
glx providers (mesa, fglrx, and different versions of the nvidia driver)
are needed. Switching alternatives is usually done automatically at
startup by live-config.

Whenever I switch the nvidia alternatives on my system to
/usr/lib/nvidia/legacy-304xx libEGL is no longer available and breaks
programs like kwin, cheese, totem, ...
Here is the console output:

$ sudo update-alternatives --set nvidia /usr/lib/nvidia/legacy-304xx

Bug#789167: nvidia-legacy-304xx-alternative: alternative for libEGL is missing

2015-06-18 Thread Ronny Standtke
Package: nvidia-legacy-304xx-alternative
Version: 304.125-1
Severity: important

glx-alternative-nvidia sets up a slave link for libEGL. The problem is
that nvidia-legacy-304xx-alternative doesn't add this slave link, too.
This way libEGL is completely missing in the running system when
nvidia-legacy-304xx-alternative is selected via update-alternatives.
This leads to many instabilities, e.g. no window decoration in KDE
because kwin is just crashing...

The attached patch, which just adds a slave link to the mesa version of
libEGL, fixes the problem for me. So far everything runs fine, including
3D games. I am not sure if the patch is the correct solution and there
are probably more things to fix (dependencies, etc.) so please consider
the patch just as a first idea...

Cheers

Ronny

Package: unknown-horizons
Version: 2014.1+ds1-1~bpo70+1

I created a local backport of unknown-horizons and noticed
that it no longer finds the standard translation (system locale).
A run with strace shows that unknown-horizons searches for files
named messages.mo but the files in the package are actually called
unknown-horizons.mo.

For example when starting in a German locale unknown-horizons searches for
/usr/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES/messages.mo

Yes, this part of the startup notification works. The non-working part
is that the bouncing does not stop after pspp has been started but only
after a timeout of around half a minute.

This seems to be a Debian packaging bug. After installing
the upstream Debian package (downloaded from here:
https://code.google.com/p/clamtk/) the documentation
opens just fine.

Bug#758143: chromium: Spelling error in desktop file

2014-08-14 Thread Ronny Standtke
Package: chromium
Version: 35.0.1916.153-1~deb7u1
Severity: minor
Tags: patch

The desktop file contains the following line
GenericName[de]=Web-Browser
Web-Browser is bad spelling. The correct spelling would be
Webbrowser (no
dash and camel case please), see here:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webbrowser
or here:
http://www.duden.de/rechtschreibung/Webbrowser

This change also makes the desktop file consistent with the spelling in the
iceweasel and konqueror desktop files.

The attached patch fixes this issue.

Bug#747975: extremetuxracer: SVG icon is missing

2014-05-13 Thread Ronny Standtke
Package: extremetuxracer
Version: 0.6.0-1~bpo70+1
Severity: minor

The previous version of extremetuxracer contained an SVG icon
(/usr/share/pixmaps/etracericon.svg). Please add it as
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/etr.svg. Then you can probably
even remove the other icons in /usr/share/pixmaps.
SVG looks so much better...
