Bug#918857: python3-distutils: Newest version appears to be missing py36 modules

Hi,

Thanks for maintaining Python in Debian! I ran into this issue as
well. To clarify, are you in the process of removing python3.6 support
from this package, or from Debian in general?

Bug#892494: diceware: "diceware" name violates trademark

2018-03-09 Thread Simon Fondrie-Teitler
Source: diceware
Severity: serious
Tags: upstream
Justification: Policy 2.1

As stated in the footer of http://world.std.com/%7Ereinhold/diceware.html the
original creator of diceware claims a trademark on the name. I've filed a bug
with upstream here: https://github.com/ulif/diceware/issues/48

Upstream does not have permission from Arnold Reinhold to use the trademark,
but is aware of the issue and has reached out to Reinhold with no response.
This package should probably be removed or renamed if upstream does not get a
response soon.

The new package works for me. However, I seem to remember previous
versions of maim would save the screenshot to a file by default. Now it
prints to stdout by default, which broke my script. If I'm not
misremembering, maybe note that in the changelog?

Sorry, I haven't found the time to work on this a while. The package is
now a version behind upstream, and there's a bunch of javascript stuff
that will need to be dealt with for new new upstream version to be
packaged. I'm going to remove myself as the owner of this bug, since I
don't want to stop others from working on it.

Depends if you want 0.7.1 or 0.8. 0.7.1 should only need a little more
works. There's a thread about what needs to be done for it to be let
through NEW, but I'm not quite sure how to link to it (is
ftpmas...@ftp-master.debian.org archived somewhere?). 0.8 would need a
fair amount, though I don't know exactly how much.

Bug#783308: RFS: mediagoblin/0.7.1+dfsg1-1 [ITP]

2015-05-15 Thread Simon Fondrie-Teitler
I've worked on a bit of this.

Paul Wise p...@debian.org writes:
On Sun, Apr 26, 2015 at 1:40 AM, Simon Fondrie-Teitler wrote:

mediagoblin - web application for sharing photos, video and other media

As I am potentially interested in mediagoblin as a possible front-end
and or replacement for various debconf.org services, I've done a
minimal first-pass review. I'm not involved in DebConf so that is of
course dependent on the DebConf teams.

The information in debian/copyright appears to be incorrect, most
upstream files are AGPL not GPL.

Whoops, fixed.

I would suggest packaging all the embedded code copies separately,
including the one you added via a patch (which itself has an embedded
 code copy).

I looked into packaging them separately, but couldn't find good
documentation on how to package css or javascript files. A few Debian
developers I talked recommended not packaging them on their own.

I would suggest using the new Files-Excluded option in
debian/copyright and repacksuffix option in debian/watch, so that
anyone can automatically convert the upstream tarball into the DFSG
orig.tar.gz. You could also try to get those files removed from the
 upstream VCS.

 http://manpages.debian.org/man0/uscan

Cool, I didn't know about those options. I've added them.

I've talked to upstream about the files, and some will be removed in the
new release, like the binary translation files. Others need to be
there to make it easy for people installing via pip or a git checkout,
like the javascript.

It would be great if the steps for setting up a mediagoblin instance
documented in README.Debian could be converted into a script
distributed upstream; the Debian package could then prompt the
sysadmin via debconf for the relevant details (suggesting appropriate
defaults in the text) and then run the script.

That's a good idea, although the version in README.Debian is closer to
an example of one possible setup, rather than a suggested way of running
it. I'm still thinking about the best way of doing this. I'm assuming
it's not a blocking issue for package upload?

I'd suggest that debian/gmg.1 be generated at dh_auto_build time or
 from the upstream build system.

I tried doing this, but the script won't even succeed showing help
output when run without mediagoblin/tools/common.py somewhere on the
python path. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to modify the python path
during build.

I'd use cgit for Vcs-Browser and https for both Vcs-* URLs.

Fixed.

If it is possible to make MediaGoblin a Python 3 only package, I would
 suggest doing that.

Python3 support in mediagoblin is not great yet, though work is being
done to fix that. For now I think it makes most sense to leave it as python2.

I note that upstream uses Transifex and Gitorious. The former is now
proprietary and the latter is being shut down. Upstream may want to
switch to something else for both.

They have already moved off Transifex and onto Pootle. Plans are being
made for a migration away from Gitorious.

You may want to add an upstream metadata file:

 https://wiki.debian.org/UpstreamMetadata

I'll look into this.

sensible defaults out of the box.

It aims to make the process of writing command line tools quick and fun

Bug#657405: Update

2015-02-01 Thread Simon Fondrie-Teitler
A long-overdue update:

I submitted 0.6.1 to NEW a while back, and it was rejected for not
properly documenting changes made to the source package in order to make
the package dfsg-free. I have fixed this and a few more minor issues
mentioned in the NEW review, along with packaging 0.8.1.

I'm comfortable enough with the state of the package that I think it's
now ready for another review by a DD. I'll be pinging a couple people
for that, but if anyone has time and wants to take a look at it that
would be great.

I've also created an Ansible role for testing a build and install from
the Debian package source, which can be found here:

Bug#657405: update to 0.7.1?

2014-10-11 Thread Simon Fondrie-Teitler
Hey,

Sorry about the extended silence. I've been trying to find time/energy
to work on it, and not doing a very good job. I'll hopefully get some
work done this weekend, and if a DD wants to take a look and upload the
0.6.1 that would be great. I'm going to try to get in contact with
Asheesh today.

Matija Nalis mnalis-debian...@voyager.hr writes:
Could you update the package to more recent 0.7.1?

I've been meaning to take a look at this, but it depends on
sqlalchemy0.9.0, 0.8.0. The version in unstable is 0.9.7. I'm not sure
if that actually breaks anything, but I recall Chris Webber saying that
some people had to run setup.py more than once to get it to work.

 I did get http://mediagoblin.org/download/mediagoblin-0.7.1.tar.gz
and 'uupdate -u', which seemed to go ok. Then I had to remove
 0001-Fix-Babel-version-restriction.-Onward-and-upward.patch (already
applied in 0.7.1), and package built and installed.

That sounds right, I actually used git-cherrypick to grab that from a
later commit.

however, running sudo -i -u mediagoblin /usr/bin/gmg -cf
 /etc/mediagoblin/default/mediagoblin.ini dbupdate
dies with ImportError: No module named unidecode.

 Installing python-unidecode (or python3-unidecode, I guess) fixes
that, so we should add that dependency for 0.7.1. Same thing is
 needed for python-jsonschema|python3-jsonschema.

 Afterwards, it dies with
   File /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/mediagoblin/tools/metadata.py, line
 25, in module
 from pyld import jsonld
 ImportError: No module named pyld

and it doesn't seem like there is pyld in debian.
pip install PyLD works around that, but we should probably package
it and add it is a dependency?

Thanks debacle for taking care of this.

 gmg dbupdate then dies with:

 /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/mediagoblin/tools/metadata.py,
 line 105, in load_resource
 return file(filename).read()
IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory:
 '/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/mediagoblin/static/metadata/rdfa11.jsonld'

manually copying (as I couldn't find how to make it included in package) with:
 mkdir -p /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/mediagoblin/static/metadata;
 cp mediagoblin/static/metadata/rdfa11.jsonld
 /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/mediagoblin/static/metadata/rdfa11.jsonld

I'm assuming this can be fixed by adding something to
debian/install.mediagoblin. I'll take a look.

Also, as mentioned before, I'd like to help with automating some of
manual tasks in README.Debian. As I'm not a DD and don't have R/W
access to anonscm.debian.org, I though about cloning repo from
 http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/collab-maint/mediagoblin.git/
somewhere else (github) and then periodically when I have something
accomplished asking here for merge? Is there a prefered way?

I'm not a DD either. You can create an account here:
https://alioth.debian.org/account/register.php You'll then need apply
for access to the collab-maint repository and have a DD request access
for you. See here for more:
https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2012/01/msg6.html

Would any of the DDs following this be able to do that?

While you're waiting for that, feel free to push changes to any other
location and I'll pull them in and push them up to the collab-maint
repo.

Again, thank you all for your help with this.

Bug#657405: installing on wheezy

2014-08-25 Thread Simon Fondrie-Teitler
Hi,

Thanks for going over this again. I'm at debconf, and have been working
on this package a lot while here. There are a bunch of changes to both
the package and the README.debian. I've responded to specific issues you
ran into bellow, but I'd also recommend taking a look around at the
changes as well.

Matija Nalis mnalis-debian...@voyager.hr writes:

 template0 as template.

So I did: sudo -u postgres createdb -E UNICODE -T template0 -O
  mediagoblin mediagoblin
which didn't complain. Hopefully it did the right thing :)

That's strange. It works for me, and psql -c '\list' shows the encoding
of template1 as UTF8 on both a wheezy machine and a jessie machine. Is
 this a fresh install?

No, it was upgrade from squeeze (and possibly woody before that, but probably
 squeeze was
 first install).

But even on fresh jessie debootstrap(8) install, it shows for me:
 $ psql -c '\list'
 List of databases

 privileges

it might be different if installed through debian installer, and user choose
 something
other than C locale. I usually choose C on servers and even rarely
 install locales
package at all, unless I need it.

I'm not quite sure why this is. I'll look into it more.

Again, thanks a lot for going over this package. The updated version
can be found on mentors here:
 https://mentors.debian.net/package/mediagoblin

Thanks a lot! Ok, I tried with:
 http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/m/mediagoblin/mediagoblin_0.6.1-1+dfsg1.dsc

and clean jessie chroot system (created via debootstrap(8)) - so it would be
 closer to targeted
distribution (I'll try wheezy again when I get it to work in jessie):

 - sudo -u postgres createuser mediagoblin does not ask any of the questions:
Shall the new role be a superuser? (y/n) n
Shall the new role be allowed to create databases? (y/n) n
Shall the new role be allowed to create more new roles? (y/n) n

but seems to create user ok. So something to that effect probably should be
 in docs:
if you're asked the following questions, the correct answers
   are...

The README.debian has the following:
Then answer NO to all the questions:
Shall the new role be a superuser? (y/n) n
Shall the new role be allowed to create databases? (y/n) n
Shall the new role be allowed to create more new roles? (y/n) n

 - sudo -u postgres createdb -E UNICODE -O mediagoblin mediagoblin still
 fails:
createdb: database creation failed: ERROR: new encoding (UTF8) is
incompatible with the encoding of the template database (SQL_ASCII)
HINT: Use the same encoding as in the template database, or use
   template0 as template.

I guess it might be related to system using default C locale, and not
 something
utf8-based, but I don't really know. Anyway workaround with adding -T
 template0
seems to work and db is created. I think we should mention that workaround
 in README.Debian
if the user encounters the bug.

I'll move to 'sudo -u postgres createdb -E UNICODE -T template0 -O
mediagoblin mediagoblin' in the README for now. It should work for both
the UTF8 case and the SQL_ASCII case.

 - 3. Add the following to the [mediagoblin] in /etc/mediagoblin.ini:
   correct path is /etc/mediagoblin/mediagoblin.ini

Fixed.

 - $ su - [mediagoblin]
we should drop the square brackets around 'mediagoblin', they're confusing
 (and don't work).
So make it just: '$ su - mediagoblin'

Good point. I've changed it.

 - on /usr/bin/gmg -cf /etc/mediagoblin/mediagoblin.ini dbupdate step, it
 warns:
WARNING:mediagoblin.init.config:When setting up config section, could not
 import 'mediagoblin.media_types.image'
   - Initializing main mediagoblin tables... done.
+ Laying foundations for Privilege table

if that warning is OK, we should mention in docs that it should be ignored.
If it isn't, we'll need to find out what is the problem (maybe depends on
 mime.types handler or something?)

Bug#657405: installing on wheezy

2014-08-09 Thread Simon Fondrie-Teitler
Thanks a lot for this!

Matija Nalis mnalis-debian...@voyager.hr writes:
python-bcrypt and python-itsdangerous on which mediagoblin depends
are not present in wheezy, so I copied/recompiled them from jessie.
After that, package compiled and installed without problems. So
I'd say installing part is ready for jessie!

Yeah, I got both of those packages into jessie in anticipation of the
mediagoblin package, but not in time for wheezy.

Then I proceeded following instructions for manual configuration in
/usr/share/doc/mediagoblin/README.Debian.gz - here are few issues (on
 wheezy):

 - sudo -u postgres createdb -E UNICODE -O mediagoblin mediagoblin
   complains with:
createdb: database creation failed: ERROR: new encoding (UTF8) is
incompatible with the encoding of the template database (SQL_ASCII)
HINT: Use the same encoding as in the template database, or use
template0 as template.

   So I did: sudo -u postgres createdb -E UNICODE -T template0 -O mediagoblin
 mediagoblin
which didn't complain. Hopefully it did the right thing :)

That's strange. It works for me, and psql -c '\list' shows the encoding
of template1 as UTF8 on both a wheezy machine and a jessie machine. Is
this a fresh install?

 - su - [mediagoblin]
there is no user mediagoblin (maybe it should be created in some step
 before?
or package should autocreate it in postinst? it is not mentioned) and I
 don't
think square brackets are supposed to be there.

So I did: useradd --system --home-dir /usr/share/mediagoblin mediagoblin
   and su - mediagoblin

Good point. I've added that to the README.Debian.

 - Copy /usr/share/mediagoblin/mediagoblin/mediagoblin.ini to
 /etc/mediagoblin_local.ini
well, there wasn't mediagoblin.ini in package at all. Should be fixed.

So I copied it from source tarball from which I built package.
And, it didn't work as mediagoblin user (from su(1) in step before), so I
 did as root:
   cp /home/mnalis/mediagoblin/mediagoblin-0.6.1/mediagoblin.ini
 /etc/mediagoblin_local.ini
   $EDITOR /etc/mediagoblin_local.ini
   chown root.mediagoblin /etc/mediagoblin_local.ini
   chmod 640 /etc/mediagoblin_local.ini

I've changed the package to copy mediagoblin.ini into /etc/mediagoblin/, and
moved
that section before the part that changes to the mediagoblin user.

 - $ /usr/bin/gmg dbupdate

   It failed for me:

It seems that with_polymorphic() is introduced in sqlalchemy.org 0.8
release, so we should fix depends version in package to be at least that.

So I upgraded to python-sqlalchemy_0.9.7-1_all.deb from Jessie

I hadn't tested it with sqlalchemy. I've added that dependency.

So I installed python-lxml packege from wheezy-backports (which
wanted to downgrade python-sqlalchemy, but worked around it). So we
   need to depend on it.

It looks like I wasn't seeing that since python-webtest recommends
python-lxml. You're right, it should be a depends.

I'd love to get the newest version into Debian as well, since it fixes

getting into experimental? I notice that it has a LowNMU tag, so if I
get the most recent version packaged, would you be OK doing a review and
possibly uploading it?

Thorsten, could you comment on why the patch touches pith/mailview? I
don't completely understand what Eduardo means that it was not necessary
before, but perhaps you have a better understanding?

Thank you for your message. Your patch is not really for Alpine, but for
the c-client library, as such, you should attempt to get it included in
it. The current library that Alpine uses (with a few minor modifications)
 is located at

 https://github.com/jonabbey/panda-imap

Asheesh, is there a reason the alpine pacakge does not depend on
libc-client2007e, but instead includes the library in the alpine
package? I can toss the relevent patch over to the uw-imap source
pacakge (which includes the libc-client2007e binary package) if you
want.

 at https://mentors.debian.net/package/iperf3.

  Thanks and regards,

I figured I'd take a quick look over this before trying to find someone
else to take a look, and I noticed a few things:

- It uses cJSON (http://cjson.sourceforge.net/), which is a separate
project. This should ideally be made into a separate package instead of
included in this one. Unless I'm mistaken it's not a package in Debian
  yet.
- The copyright file mentions public-domain a few times, however, I
don't think any of them are actually public domain. See the relevant
section of the Debian copyright format manual:

https://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/copyright-format/1.0/#public-domain
- In the copyright file, src/locale.c src/units.c src/tcp_window_size.c
says it's licensed under public-domain, but the license looks like the
  BSD-3-Clause license.
- config/ax_lib_socket_nsl.m4 also says it's public domain.
- install-sh says FSF changes to this file are in the public domain.,
which does come from the license, but I highly doubt that the FSF
would put a file into the the public domain since they know the issues
with doing that. However, there are a bunch of other packages in
Debian with this file in them, so I doubt it's a huge issue.

These are mostly small problems, and I'm not positive any of them are
blocking it getting into Debian. They are things that have been noticed
in packages I've created in the past, though, so I'm guessing that they
would be brought up with anyone I forwarded it to.

I'll try to get someone to take a more experienced look as well.

Simon

Bug#747033: offlineimap uses OpenSSL, causing Debian to violate the GPL when distributing it

2014-05-04 Thread Simon Fondrie-Teitler
Package: offlineimap

Severity: serious
Justification: 2.3

Dear Maintainer,

offlineimap/imaplib2.py currently uses Python's ssl library, which
pulls in OpenSSL as described here:

Additionally offlineimap/folder/Maildir.py uses the md5 function from

Is this a regression from the version in unstable?

I don't think so. I'm honestly still trying to figure out how all of
this fits together, and how the licenses work.

The previous package didn't depend on it, and the suggestion to install
pyopenssl is new, but it was never an explicit dependency. It's pulled
in with the python support for TLS connections, so I'm fairly sure that
if you had given it a https link in a previous version, it would have
used the openssl code.

The package is uploaded here:
http://mentors.debian.net/package/python-pypump

I'm also still trying to figure out the Debian policy towards python
applications that are licensed under the GPL. My understanding is that
any python code makes TLS connections ends up using code from the
openssl library. Upstream is reluctant to add the clause, and points out
that programs like offlineimap don't have this clause despite being GPL
licensed and making TLS connections with python.

If anyone could clarify, that would be helpful.

Simon

I've got this mostly done. Lintian found that the sphinx theme they're

To do is fixing a conflict relating to the usr/bin/pypump-shell binary,

The extlib directory seems more tricky, but my guess is that you could

Upstream did fix the issues. I've cherry-picked the changes and applied

What are exactly the issues needing to be solved now?

Right now I'm waiting on a review.

How are you communicating with upstream, are there bug reports? It would

Description : tool for measuring maximum TCP and UDP bandwidth performance

iperf was orginally developed by NLANR/DAST as a tool for measuring
maximum TCP and UDP bandwidth performance. It allows the tuning of
various parameters and UDP characteristics and reports bandwidth,
delay jitter, and datagram loss.

iperf3 is a new implementation from scratch, with the goal of a
smaller, simpler code base, and a library version of the functionality
that can be used in other programs. iperf3 also has a number of features
found in other tools such as nuttcp and netperf, but were missing from
iperf2.X.

Some new features in iperf3 include:

- reports the number of TCP packets that were retransmitted
- reports the average CPU utilization of the client and server (-V flag)
- support for zero copy TCP (-Z flag)
- JSON output format (-J flag)

iperf3.X is not backwards compatible with iperf2.X

I started a new job recently, which took a bunch of my time, but I've
started freeing up more time to work on Debian stuff. This is the first
major Debian package I've done, so it's been slow going.

I've moved the git repository to collab-maint [0] and upgraded it to

of DFSG issues to be addressed (some locally modified code in extlib/,
and several media files in mediagoblin/tests/test_submission/ [1] that
don't have sources). I'm communicating with upstream about the DFSG
issues, and talking to some DDs about how to address them.

If others want to review the package as it stands, or take a crack at

getting the package into Debian simply because I'm still learning.

 Ubuntu did.

The Regression introduced on python-gnutls by such reversion was already
fixed on Ubuntu with another patch (see LP:#1013798 [2]) and they have
been running with the patch for some time without more problems (AFAIK)
so I think that we can assume that there are no more regressions.

Therefore I think we should reassign this bug back to libgcrypt11. Fix
it with a patch that reverts d769529a71ccda4e833f919f3c5693d25b005ff0
[1] and then fill another RC bug for python-gnutls asking for applying
the same patch that Ubuntu applied (see LP:#1013798 [2])

At work we are running into this problem while testing wheezy. setuid
programs were failing when authenticating over ldap. I've tested a patch
to libgcrypt11 reverting d769529a71ccda4e833f919f3c5693d25b005ff0 and it
fixes the problem for us, with no obvious regressions. If you want me to
do any more testing I can do so.

Is it possible to get this fixed for the wheezy release? It would
greatly smooth our rollout of wheezy.

Thanks to all for your work on this.

It also provides useful functions to lookup network MAC addresses.

 From a quick dh-make-perl run:

Needs the following modules for which there are no debian packages available:

Agreed, and having played around with the module more, I no longer think
it is worth it to package it for Debian. My experience with it has not
been great. It seems to be a set of packages with somewhat arbitrary
divisions, and does not interface with other perl modules nicely.

Assuming no one else thinks it's a good idea to package it, I think this

Hey,

I've gotten my packaging efforts for mediagoblin going here:

It's still a little messing, but I can build the package and install it,
and lintian is not giving errors. If you would not mind/would like to
help that would be great, either over email on in #mediagoblin.

Does this offer any benefits over the existing implementation *now*?

Yes, a few. purity-ng list will show a list of possible files in the
current directory and in /usr/share/games/purity/. The old one simply
prints a hard-coded list.

It also has the option to print out a list of the questions and the
user's answers at the end.

Additionally, purity-ng has a maintainer. purity is orphaned, both

Bug#432838: Status

2010-11-22 Thread Simon Fondrie-Teitler
Hi,

What is the status of this? There does not seem to have been any
progress since your last email in 2007. Is it OK if I take over the ITP?

Thanks,
Simon

Bug#592830: override: xstarfish:utils/optional

2010-08-12 Thread Simon Fondrie-Teitler
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

The package xstarfish currently has an override saying games. However, the
package is not a game, it generates patterns for a desktop back round and would
therefore be better suited in utils.

Bug#533367: Scrotwm should depend on dwm

2009-06-16 Thread Simon Fondrie-Teitler
Package: Scrotwm
Version: 0.9.5
I just spent a long time trying to determine the reason that meta+p
was not bringing up the menu. It turs out that if dwm is not
installed, the menu will not come up, thus rendering Scrotwm useless.

Bug#500866: Possible Solution

2008-10-17 Thread Simon Fondrie-Teitler
Pulseaudio does not seem to like it when the time is crazy. I had this
problem and changed the date from 1904 to 2008 and it worked. Hope
this helped.
