The only potential problem I see is that the license does not talk
about whether modifications can be made to the fonts without
restrictions. Otherwise the language looks similar to BSD/PD.

Bug#418822: [Debian-in-workers] Bug#418822: ttf-indic-fonts package need to be updated

2007-04-12 Thread Soumyadip Modak

I'll be looking into the Lohit font family, and hopefully I'll have an
updated package uploaded into Unstable by the weekend

On 4/12/07, G. Naresh Kumar <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

package: ttf-telugu-fonts

Currently, the Lohit font family supports 11 Indian languages: Assamese,
Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi,
Tamil, Telugu, and are available as TrueType fonts. Currently the
ttf-indic-fonts package in Debian doesnot have Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya
and Telugu font of Lohit family. This needs to be updated into the
ttf-indic-fonts of Debian.

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Lohit?highlight=%28Lohit%29

Thanks and Regards
Naresh

However as Mahesh pointed out in his mail, it would perhaps be better if
wishlist bugs were filed against all the packages for which there are no
Lohit fonts included

Christian, can you point me to any resources that I can refer to, in order
to migrate the rules file to a debhelper compliant style ?

I'm immediately building a new NMU. Thanks for spotting this and

apologies for introducing this bug. NMU patch attached.

2006-12-17 Thread Soumyadip Modak

As far as I remember, I received a mail from the original developers of
RacOtf who claim it is GPL-ed. I'll hunt up the mail and forward it. I plan
to include it in the next big upgrade of ttf-indic-fonts (I'm sorry I can't
do it right now, since my home DSL is down). If Christian does decide to do
an NMU to include Anjali Old Lipi, that'll be great :)

Sorry for top posting, but I included a couple of people who I feel should
be kept in the loop.

I could include it in a next NMU of ttf-indic-fonts, aimed at fixing
#403404, caused by errors in the Rachana font.

My conclusion currently, about Malayalam fonts is:

-The Rachana font (Racotf04) could have potential licensing
issues. See http://bugs.debia.org/385990 for background
-It definitely has technical issues
-Anjali Old Lipi is a suitable replacement font according to Malayalam
speakers

However, the licensing of that font is pretty scarce. All what we have
is:

Credit to Kevin & Siji, 2004. No rights reserved.

Upstream for this font seems to be http://varamozhi.sourceforge.net
where the license is said to be GPL.

debian-legal people, do you have any advice about this being enough to
be considered "free"?

People from the varamomzhi project on SourceForge, could you clarify
the license for the Anjali Old Lipi font?

Many thanks in advance for all your answers.

Unfortunately, I can do nothing about this problem, maybe you should
try to contact upstream over this issue

On 11/6/06, G. Naresh Kumar <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

The telugu font Pothana2000 missed covering the code point "0C55". As
fontconfig assumes that a font covers a language (fc-cache generates
"lang:te") only if all the code points of that language are covered. So
in the case of Pothana2000, as it missed a code point, fontconfig
doesn't recognize this as a telugu font. So the lang field in the font
cache is left empty. As a result of this, Free-sans (which does not have
complete coverage for Telugu) is chosen as the default font for
rendering Telugu on the system. Although there are other (perhaps more
proper) ways to solve this problem, it would be nice to fix this also.

Well, I recently had discussions with Primoz Peterlin of Freefonts.
Bengali glyphs are already in place in the latest Freefonts. Hindi and
Gujarati glyphs should be in, by the next release of Freefonts. I've not
yet managed to contact the other teams, as my exams are on currently.
I'm hoping that we'll have full support for Indic languages in Freefonts
in the new year. Shouldn't be a problem anymore then

The fact that the error occured for a Farsi font too probably means that
it has something to do with Defoma. I'm not very sure, but I'll check
with the Defoma maintainers.

If these fonts are to be included into ttf-indic-fonts, I'll need
clarifications on the license of the first set of fonts.

Well technically the name of the Lohit family of fonts don't have any
space. E.G. for lohit_bn.ttf FontForge shows :

Lohit-Bengali in the FontName field.

I'll check with the defoma people and report back asap.

Thanks

Reassigned the bug to vflib3. No other package using defoma has any
problem with ttf-indic-fonts, and the bug report also mentions a font
not in ttf-indic-fonts (Calligraphic-Katakana) which is having problems
with vflib3.

Ok, thanks a lot for the info. Internet access in India is a bit spotty
at the moment, because of union troubles, at the telcos. I hope to get
the upstream developers to confirm whether the gnu.org wordlist is
identical to the original, in a couple of days. If any emergency
situation arises, then feel free to do an NMU, with the gnu.org
wordlist.
