I appear to have experienced this same bug on the armhf architecture (a
raspberrypi). The LD_PRELOAD workaround described above works for me.

I haven't had a chance to digest the entire of your email.

However most of the magic patterns do work. For example rename an
OpenOffice spreadsheet removing the .sxc spreadsheet and it is still
detected as a spreadsheet using the following magic

magic priority=50
  match value=mimetypeapplication/vnd.sun.xml.calc type=string
offset=30/

I can't look at this at moment as I am in the middle of my finals. Will
try to look at it in a couple of weeks.

I suggest you run the following script:

Here are the reverse-depends for nautilus, totem-xine and

The mime type comment is what nautilus shows in the Type field when
displaying a list of files. If this description is missing then the
Type field is filled in with the mime type instead. In my opinion this
is a non-ideal situation so it is fine for nautilus to whinge about it.
Furthermore most mime types in the fd.org file have a comment. I'm
reassigning this bug to shared-mime-info and have attached a patch that

Fixing those lintian errors wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. So
here is a version that has no lintian errors/warnings. Can someone check
it and then get it uploaded?

In particular please check my additions to prerm and postinst. The lines
I added to call /usr/sbin/install-docs were based on examples i found in
other packages so I'm not completely sure they're in the right place.

Ray has picked up the old incorrect patch for the xsl bug (#281894,
#282986, #294908). The mime type for xsl should be application/xml
 (application/xslt+xml doesn't work with firefox)

I noticed a couple of problems with Ray's package and have attached a
couple of patches and a revised changelog entry which fix them.
Unfortunately, my admittedly clueless, attempts at modifying the package
have failed so I can't provide a diff.gz file.

Problems:
1) He thought that the x-eps fix was included in the 0.16 release.
However, it is still only in CVS HEAD. I have included a patch which
fixes most of the issues.
2) As previously noted he picked up the old incorrect patch for the xsl
bug. I have attached a corrected patch to this email.

application/xslt+xml is AFAIK quite a new MIME type so I am wondering
if the difference between you and Mathias (for whom the patch works) is
that he is using a more up to date browser? Upstream want to keep things
as specific as possible which is why they have chosen not to use
text/xml.

Bug#294908: shared-mime-info breaks xsl transformation for browsers

I'm included Roland's complete reply so that it is recorded int the bts.
I've also attached his example files to this mail.

 Hi,

Thank you for the quick response.
After applying th patch, I got the same error in my browser I had
 before:

 -

I'm using Mozilla Firefox 1.0.2 but the error is the same on all
mozilla based browsers. I'm working on a gentoo linux system but
also experienced the problem on debian.

As soon, as I replace the line

  mime-type type=application/xslt+xml

 with

   mime-type type=text/xml

 or even

   mime-type type=application/xml

 everything works fine.

I think Mathias has not checked with local xml/xsl files so
 this could be the difference.

I attached the two files (xml and xsl) I used for my test so
you can check the behavior in your own environment.
Copy them in the same directory and open the xml file with
the browser. A Ranking list should appear, if everything is ok.

Ok. I've just used your files on my machine and agree that the current
upstream fix does not work with firefox 1.0.2. I also agree that
changing the mime type to application/xml makes the xsl file work in
firefox.

As a side note in my user account firefox will quite happily process the
xsl file EVEN with the original debian supplied mime type of
text/x-xslt. I've tried creating a new user profile for firefox in my
home directory but it still insists on processing the file. It is only
when I create a completely new linux user account that I see this bug at
all.

Wouldn't it make sense for gnome-terminal to try to convert what it can
of a pasted string (copied from a different encoding) and just leave
blanks or something for characters that it can't copy? At the moment it
refuses to paste the string at all if it contains characters it can't

I have attached a file that demonstrates this. Set gnome-terminal to use
ISO-8859-1 encoding. Then try copying the lines in the attached file
into gnome-terminal. The first line should copy fine but the second will
fail silently (it uses a Unicode mu).

Package: gnome-terminal
Version: 2.8.2-2
Followup-For: Bug #257709

Confirmed with gnome-terminal 2.8.2-2

If gnome-terminal really can't cope with unicode characters then it
should a least let the user know why the paste has failed. Alternatively
it could do what my xterm does and just ignore the characters it cant
understand.

2005-04-17 Thread Stewart Jeacocke
retitle 257709 Silently fails to paste chars if locale doesn't support them.
thanks

If I try to cut and paste a piece of text from mozilla which contains,
e.g., eacute;, the paste silently fails.

Pasting the same text into, e.g., gedit, succeeds.

The problem is that you are not using a UTF-8 (Unicode) system locale.
Run

# pkg-reconfigure locales

and select a Unicode locale (eg en_GB.UTF-8) as the default system
locale. Log out of GNOME and log back in. Launch gnome-terminal and
check that the menu item Terminal - Set Character Encoding - Current
Locale shows the UTF-8 locale. If so you should be able to paste any
Unicode character that you like into gnome terminal.

Of course it would be nice if gnome-terminal warned you when you tried
to paste a string containing an unsupported character into the terminal
rather that just silently failing the paste. This probably deserves to
be forwarded upstream.

Yeah, OK, thanks, that seems to explain the symptoms. As a practical
problem, it seems that most of the email and newgroups I see are using
iso-8859-1, so that's the only thing that seems to work as a default
 encoding for my terminal.

I'm pretty sure that iso-8859-1 encoding is a subset of the Unicode
encoding. So even when the locale is set to a Unicode encoding
iso-8859-1 (extended ASCI) documents should still work fine (they seem
to here).

If they really don't then would you attach an example file that contains
characters that fail to render with a Unicode locale?

Thanks

Actually on further investigation it would appear that you wish to do
both. Declaring eps as a subclass of ps is good because it means that
you inherit all the application associations given to generic
postscript. Raising the priority of the magic pattern for eps is needed
because otherwise when you go to the nautilus properties window for a
valid eps file it will be listed as type application/postscript (not
image/x-eps).

Bug#259652: [Fwd: Re: nautilus: eps file problem]

I have a attached two eps files that cause the problem to occur. One
was produced by xmgrace and the other by gnuplot. I both case the
files have be successfully imbeded into a LaTeX document.

I notice that the file geomf2a1fix2-colour.eps that was created by
gnuplot doesn't have the correct first line

%!PS-Adobe-2.0 EPSF-1.2

It instead has

%!PS-Adobe-2.0

The other file has

%!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0

Running `file' on the first returns ps (and eps if I add ESPF-1.2) and
on the other eps. But neither is opened by nautilus without the
warning (which is slightly different from the original warning):

The filename ellparan2-2-colour.eps indicates that this file is of
type Encapsulated PostScript image. The contents of the file
indicate that the file is of type PostScript document. If you open
this file, the file might present a security risk to your system.

Bug#241150: window closes when dragging files from another

When dragging files from one Nautilus window to another (either
'browser' or 'spatial' types, it doesn't matter which on either end),
the receiving window switches to showing just the dragged file for a
 split second then closes.

Did you get around to checking if this bug still exists on a current

the accelerator is the thing that allows me to use alt-f-e to empty

Image previews (icons) for TIFF images received from FAX
services are squeezed together vertically. I assume that's
because the TIFF image has different resolutions horizontally
and vertically (non-square pixels). The Nautilus icon generator
should take this into account and generate a correctly scaled
 preview.

Sorry for the delay. Can you still reproduce this with the current gnome

Sorry for the delay to reply on this. That's not a nautilus bug, but
probably a window manager one. You forced metacity to behave in a broken

I'd disagree, if disable_workarounds=TRUE then spatial nautilus doesn't work.
This suggests that nautilus is using some sort of broken feature. I have

Bug#251051: nautilus: ftp should not do LIST -l

Hi,

You reported the fact the the ftp module in gnome-vfs issues LIST -L
commands and that these did not work with the ftp server that you were
using. If you can remember it would be useful to know what ftp daemon
you were trying to connect to?

After reading some files it appears that that this is done is to allow
the program to spot symbolic links. However, there are already special
cases in the code for MACOS, NETWARE and Windows NT so another one could
probably be added if we know what ftp daemon you were dealing with?

Bug#180454: nautilus: Logic used to decide what mountpoints to show on desktop

2005-03-13 Thread Stewart Jeacocke
Package: nautilus
Version: 2.8.2-2
Followup-For: Bug #180454

There appear to be two things which trigger nautilus to show icons on the
desktop when a volume is mounted either,
1) The volume is marked as user mountable in /etc/fstab
OR
2) Any volume which has a mountpoint in /media

Furthermore the original submitter of the bugs seems to have said that the
reason that his NTFS partitions weren't showing up was because they weren't
marked user in fstab. The logic used to decide whether or not to show an icon
for a mounted volume seems very reasonable to me.

I would think that this bug report should be closed.

Bug#257742: nautilus: unreproducable with Nautilus 2.8.2

2005-03-13 Thread Stewart Jeacocke
Package: nautilus
Version: 2.8.2-2
Followup-For: Bug #257742

I can't reproduce this with Gnome 2.8 in Sarge. This is what I did,

Go to Applications - Network Servers
Click File - Open Location
Enter an sftp URI eg sftp://localhost
Copy some files
Shut down all Nautilus windows

After this the only new processes I see when running ps x -U user are
14954 ?S 0:00 sshd: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
14955 ?Ss 0:00 /usr/lib/sftp-server
This would seem to be the expected behaviour

However, I have found a way to produce zombie ssh processes by entering
sftp:// URIs into Actions - Run Application... See bug 299361.

Bug#251051: nautilus: confirmed in gnome 2.8

2005-03-13 Thread Stewart Jeacocke
Package: nautilus
Version: 2.8.2-2
Followup-For: Bug #251051

gnome 2.8 nautilus issues LIST -L commands. I can't find find an ftp server
that objects to it but it is easy enough to see the command being sent.
However, I agree with the original submitter in that my interpretation of the
RFC, http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc959.html, is that the only command that is
guaranteed to be supported is a plain LIST.

Steps to reproduce:
Start up ethereal and capture packets using the filter tcp port ftp
Applications - Network Servers - File - Open Location
Enter a ftp uri eg (ftp.uk.debian.org)
Stop capturing
In the packet dump (attached) you will see that nautilus issues a LIST -L
command

Bug#254487: nautilus: confirmed with gnome 2.8

2005-03-13 Thread Stewart Jeacocke
Package: nautilus
Version: 2.8.2-2
Followup-For: Bug #254487

severity 254487 wishlist
thanks

Steps to reproduce (assuming /usr is a separate partition mounted ro):

Open /usr in nautilus
#mount -o remount,rw /usr

The nautilus /usr window will close.

Sounds like a wishlist to forward upstream?

Bug#298293: nautilus: can't reproduce

2005-03-13 Thread Stewart Jeacocke
Package: nautilus
Version: 2.8.2-2
Followup-For: Bug #298293

tags 298293 + unreproducible
thanks

I can't reproduce this on a mainly Sarge system. Furthermore, after the first
time I display the properties box the result seems to be cached as it is
calculated much faster subsequently.
