Bug#790115: /sbin/fsck: e2fsck is run on ROOT filesystem with every Reboot

2015-06-30 Thread Subhashis Roy
There is a correction I would like to put for my earlier report on the bug.
I had mentioned Filesystem last write time is in the Future.
However, it should be read as Superblock last  write time is in the Future,
and then fsck is invoked to correct it.

2014-04-12 Thread Subhashis Roy
Thanks for your suggestion. I checked the Bios setup. There is an option of
LAN/WLAN switching, which was on, and created the problem I reported earlier.

Therefore, I request you to close the bug.

Thanks again for your time.

Bug#706355: Fwd: Re: Bug#706355: linux-image-3.2.0-4-amd64: Kernel Panic with the new kernel during booting

2013-05-01 Thread Subhashis Roy
Hi,

OK, so this is a very simple case and it's very surprising that it
 fails.

If you reboot back to the old kernel version, does that still work?

Can you capture the kernel log from a failed boot? If you add
'break=bottom' to the kernel command line, you should get to a shell in
the initramfs. You can then mount a USB flash drive or similar, and
copy the boot messages to it, e.g.:

(initramfs) ls -l /dev/sda2 # did the SATA drive appear

This case could have a hardware (harddisk problem ?) component.
I have noticed Grub to issue error messages before loading the boot
option screen
in some of the trial boots. The message was:
Grub:
error: hd0 out of disk.
In one case, it even entered rescue mode.

In other cases, boot screen appeared.
In ~2/4 cases no problem happened despite the warning by Grub.

In other 2 cases kernel reported at the start of boot:
loading initramfs.
No such file or directory.

Then it starts loading kernel. In the next screen it panics
as reported before.
I did try your trick 'break=bottom' in kernel boot option line. However,
this works
when kernel has mostly booted, and it gives me a busybox shell.
However, when kernel panic happened it happened much earlier, and no
commands would
work (including ALT-Sysrq-B to reboot).

I could cause the old kernel to also panic in one such occasion.

Hope these give some clues.

Regards,
Subhashis

   USB, or other means?

The root device is a simple partition '/dev/sda2' (the details of it was
already part of the mail as captured by
'reportbug' when it booted from the kernel on which I flled the bug
  report).
The physical volume is attached by SATA.

Bug#490893: initscripts: reboot fails to unmount '/'

Hi,

Now I did the same thing of first purging portmap, and then
re-installing.
This has now fixed the problem. '/' does get unmounted during 'reboot'.
I guess if this works for others, the bug is fixed with the present
version of portmap.

Thanks.

2008-12-01 Thread Subhashis Roy
Hi,

However, I have noticed that for the first time after
installing a new version of Portmap, the Root partiton gets unmounted
during Reboot. However, on subsequent Reboot it shows '/' busy.

Bug#506739: imagemagick: fails to read or write '.jp2' (JPEG-2000) files

2008-11-24 Thread Subhashis Roy
Package: imagemagick
Version: 7:6.3.7.9.dfsg1-2.1+lenny1
Severity: normal

Hi,

I find that the present Imagemagick package providing 'display'
is not able to read or write files in JPEG-2000 format.

When I try to open a '.jp2' file it complains:
error: cannot decode code stream.
However, 'irfanview' with 'wine' can show the file.

Moreover, trying to save a '.jpg' file to '.jp2' format fails.
'display' pops up an error window with message: Unable to write X image.
Surprisingly, the filename it shows it tried writing to ends with '.jpg'
rather than '.jp2', which was selected during Format option Save as.

Beware that glxgears is not a benchmark.

2008-09-12 Thread Subhashis Roy

Hi Julien,

I stripped a few lines before the messages I had sent Locking assertion
failure. Backtrace:

The lines are:
-
(WW) intel(0): Failed to set up write-combining range
(0xe000,0x1000)
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic, removing
from list!

*FvwmTaskBar: cannot open console

A few lines stripped after the message #13 xv [0x804cc91] assertion
failure were:

-
X Error: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
  Major Opcode: 4
-

Hope this helps (note that I am still using 'fvwm95' as my Window
manager. Though this was removed in Etch, I modified the '.deb' file to
correct the paths according to Etch's spec. of not having
'/usr/X11R6/bin' area, and used Soft links to circumvent the problem. I
also slightly changed its name to 'fvwm95.0').

Quite often I also notice that the Window manager cannot kill itself during
Exit from X-Window (it sorts of hang there and I need to kill X with
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace) which I do not know can be from the assertion
failure.

However, assertion failure for this package did not happen with Etch and
I am noticing it only after upgrading to Testing.

Since the backtrace shows failure mostly with '/usr/lib/libX11.so.6',
which is part of 'libx11-6', I am filling bug-report against 'libx11-6'.

Note that the xserver driver is 'xserver-xorg-video-intel' and the chip
is Q35.

Bug#498673: xserver-xorg-video-intel: 3D acceleration is very slow in absence of heavy load on the CPU

2008-09-11 Thread Subhashis Roy
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.3.2-2+lenny2
Severity: normal

When I run `glxgears' I find that on Full screen mode (1280x1024) the
Frame Per Second (FPS) becomes pretty slow. The display is not smooth and
FPS is ~18.
My Video chip is intel Q35.

Given that I used to get ~80 FPS with a slower machine (Intel core 2
duo 2.4 GHz) than the present (Intel Core 2 duo 3.0 GHz (E8400)) made me
think something is wrong with the Acceleration mechanism for this chip.
However, I figured out that when I am running something heavy (e.g.
`burnP6', which is part of 'cpuburn' to put heavy load on 1 of the CPU) I
get a much smoother display with FPS of ~180 (factor of 10 increase!).

Note that I do get the same behaviour of FPS while using `stellarium' in
both the cases mentioned above.

I thought of CPU frequency being lower is repsponsible. However, I
checked that when `glxgears' is on, 1 of the CPU does change frequenecy
(cpufreq_ondemand) from 1.998 to 3.0 GHz.

Therefore, it appears that there it is not utilising the CPU
power available with the present implementation of its DRI
and I am filing a bug report in this regard.

I am also attaching the output of 'lsmod' '/proc/cpuinfo' and
'lspci' at the end of this report.

Note that I am running a 'kernel.org' unmodified 2.6.26.3, however, I found the
same behaviour while using the Lenny 2.6.26-1 kernel.

Bug#378487: linux-2.6: kernel-2.6.17-3 on a P-IV locks up the machine: problem with 'drm:i830'

2007-08-06 Thread Subhashis Roy

Hi,

Thanks for your mail.

I have not found any such problem after upgrading to Etch.
Etch kernel ran fine for a few days I used.
I am running unmodified stock kernel 2.6.20.10 for more than 2 months,
and the system never locked up in this time.

Therefore, you can close the bug from Etch onwards.

Xorg uses 'i915' as the kernel module, whereas the older XFree86 used
i830. Therefore, it is possible that the i830 kernel module was causing
the problem.

As the Card reader does not work with Debian-3.1 on my Acer Aspire 1524
Laptop, I download the Debian Live CD of Testing, 2 days back (made on
29th March). I booted the machine from that all the testing is done
while the machine was running from the CD.

I have an SD card, which I use in my camera and wanted to read that.
When I insert the Card reader (with the SD card in the socket), I get a

While starting the test, the card was blank and was formatted in the
camera (the card reader works fine in Windows), and I had copied an
image and a small text file while running Debian CD from my hard disk
without any error. (The name for that file (pict0001.jpg) is seen
below in the output).

After writing the file, I did 'sync.
Then I could open the file with 'gimp' from the '/media/usbdisk/'
area. However, after unmounting, when I mount it again (this time 'ro'
for safefty),
I get an error while opening it with 'gimp': Corrupt JPEG data: 25

bytes before marker 0x0f.
Then it shows Unsupported marker type 0x0f.

('/dev/hde1' is mounted on '/media/usbdisk' as vfat).
Also, 'ls -l /media/usbdisk/dcim/100km006' shows something strange.

--
Notice several question marks appearing above.

Though 'ls -l' shows the file sizes on hard disk and the SD card to be
the same, 'md5sum' differs between the two. Being curious, I tried
the same again on a different file. Copy a file while being mounted in
'rw' mode, 'sync' and then 'mount -o remount,ro'. Till this step,
'md5sum' remains the same. However, once 'umount' and 'mount' with
either in 'ro' or 'rw', the 'md5sum' differs.

The same repeats for any small Text files.

Once in a while, I have also noticed FAT file system panic:
--
Apr 1 15:57:35 debian kernel: FAT: Filesystem panic (dev hde1)
Apr 1 15:57:35 debian kernel: invalid access to FAT (entry
0xe001)
-
However, I have checked that no error message appeared in 'syslog'
while I mounted the SD card 'rw' to the time I mount it 'ro'.

Note that the same error repeats with Knoppix-5.1.1 Live CD.

Since Data corruption like this without an error message is a Grave
error, I am filing a RC Bug.
However, I am not clear whether the Bug lies in PCMCIA, or in the
respective KERNEL module.
Since both are part of Debian Etch, I am leaving it to the package
maintainer to reassign it to Kernel, if appropriate.

For your possible inspection, I have also attached the output of
'lspci -v' (lspci-v), and 'lsmod' (lsmod) along with this mail.

2006-11-07 Thread Subhashis Roy
Package: atlas3-sse2

Justification: renders package unusable

I tried to use Scipy from Python2.3. However, after importing Scipy (stable
branch),
when I try to assign a simple matrix to a variable, it calls 'import
lapack_lite',
and that gives an error message
'ImportError: /usr/lib/atlas/sse2/liblapack.so.3: undefined symbol: ATL_ctbmv'

I found the same error with atlas3-base.

Since this appears to be a serious problem which renders this package unusable,

Bug#378487: linux-2.6: kernel-2.6.17-3 on a P-IV locks up the machine: problem with 'drm:i830'

2006-07-16 Thread Subhashis Roy
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.17-3
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

I have downloaded the kernel source linux-2.6_2.6.17.orig.tar.gz,
linux-2.6_2.6.17-3.diff.gz and linux-2.6_2.6.17-3.dsc from Debian
Unstable, and used 'dpkg-source -x linux-2.6_2.6.17-3.dsc' which unpacks
the source and applied the patches in a source directory.
Then I used 'make-kpkg' to compile the kernel and installed it.

However, when I try running 'stellarium 0.8.0-2' which is compiled from
source taken from 'Debian Testing', the system almost entirely locks up
after a while of using it. The mouse Cursor vanishes. Standard
keystrokes like 'ctrl-alt-backspace' or 'ctrl-alt-F1' to reach Console
fails. However 'SYSrq' keys works, and the 'Powerbutton' can also signal
'init' to make a clean shutdown.

The reason of the problem appears to be what I find in the kernel log.

It appears that the kernel is locks up the machine.

I have faced the same problem a few days back with kernel-2.6.16.1
compiled from source taken from 'kernel.org' site.

Since this is an error which makes the Pentium IV unusable till
rebooted, I am filling an RC bug report against this kernel.

Bug#357354: nvidia-graphics-drivers: Screen resolution 1280x800 does not work (reverts back to 1024x768)

2006-03-16 Thread Subhashis Roy
Package: nvidia-graphics-drivers
Version: 1.0.8178-2
Severity: normal

I downloaded the source for the above package from Testing,
compiled and installed on my Laptop (Acer Aspire 1524 WLMI) having a
maximum Screen resolution of 1280x800. However, the screen ('xdpyinfo'
shows 1280x800) appear to be bigger than the monitor (right now 1024x768
pixels are accomodated), as the mouse movements near the edges of the
monitor moves the Screen. However with the same XFree86 configuration
file, I could get the earlier version in Debian Stable (1.0.7174)
properly working. Even now if I load 'nv' driver rather than 'nvidia'
it works properly.
I find in /var/log/XFree86.0.log:
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Not using mode 1280x800:
(WW) NVIDIA(0): horizontal blanking width ((max(1409,1333) - min(1280,1301)

(WW) NVIDIA(0): horizontal sync start (1301) not a multiple of 8

...
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode 1024x768

I tried using Modeline of

and
ModeLine 1280x800 77.1 1280 1312 1600 1632 800 816 824 841
in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 with the same effect.

Bug#341754: nvidia-kernel-source: nvidia kernel module build with kernel source 2.6.14.3 fails to load

2005-12-03 Thread Subhashis Roy
Hi,

Your suggestion worked fine. After applying the patch, I can load
nvidia module (amd64 kernel). With my card GeForce FX Go5700 it
appears to work fine at present.

Thanks.Subhashis

Bug#341754: nvidia-kernel-source: nvidia kernel module build with kernel source 2.6.14.3 fails to load

2005-12-02 Thread Subhashis Roy
Package: nvidia-kernel-source
Version: 1.0.7174-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I compiled nvidia kernel module build from source using Linux kernel
source downloaded from 'kernel.org', and build it using gcc-3.4 with
make-kpkg. However, after installation of the necessary packages,
loading the nividia kernel module with 'modprobe -v nvidia' fails.
In /var/log/syslog, it reports:
