Bug#591416: This bug might be due to Windows programs overwriting grub
Hi, As revealed lately booting to Windows can cause parts of grub overwritten by Windows programs. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=550702 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/441941 I think this happened to me after a Windows XP session. I didn't react too much then, since grub booted into Linux and then grub-pc was upgraded by a new version. Missing boot menu might be due to some program overwriting the embedding area. Now I'm reluctant to boot to Windows until this problem is solved. The problems seen are similar as the Ubuntu bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/601563 where no boot menu is shown at all, but Linux boots automatically. Pleas let me know if I can help in any way to find which program is overwriting grub. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#542451: More info about the problematic directory
severity 542809 important I would claim that severity is important, not normal. Nevertheless, it can remain normal as long as anybody attends this problem. The directory listing should not be empty in Nautilus (via gvfs). ls behaves as expected, listing all entries except OldFiles/OldFiles, se below. The problematic directory is part of our backup system: Oldfiles contains the backup data (in addition to the whole home directory tree). Of course the OldFiles/OldFiles directory cannot contain any data. This would create a recursive dependency. Looking at exit codes ls and gvfs-ls give different results. Even if gvfs-ls exit code is 0, an error is flagged, see last two entries. Seem like it just exits instead of reporting the other directory entries. Bug#412799: linux-image-2.6.18-4-686 does not boot
Steve, Could you try running: /usr/sbin/yaird -d -o /tmp/yaird-output -f directory 2.6.18-4-686 and post the output? This should include debugging info about how yaird is trying to resolve the symlinks. It should also create a directory for you, /tmp/yaird-output, containing the contents that it think *should* have been written to the initramfs. Can you verify whether, within this directory, the symlinks for these libraries are broken the same way that they were in your initramfs image? Attached please find the output of the command given above. Looking at the symlinks, none of them are corrupt. Finally, it appears that you're using glibc 2.5 from experimental. Can you please downgrade to the unstable version of libc6, to check whether yaird works correctly when run on such a system? Will do that later when I have physical access to the box. I have been using glibc 2.5 for some time now, since kernels before 2.6.14 without problems. Why should just kernel 2.6.18-4-686 cause problems, and not the previous ones?
