Same mistake for me.

Apparently related to the word SMARTHOST in /etc/dma/dma.conf.

When I leave the line
#SMARTHOST
and add the line
SMARTHOST 192.168.222.23,
ie.
---
# Your smarthost (also called relayhost).  Leave blank if you don't want
# smarthost support.
# NOTE: on Debian systems this is handled via debconf!
# Please use dpkg-reconfigure dma to change this value.
#SMARTHOST
SMARTHOST 192.168.222.23
---
error occurs.

The error also occurs when
#SMARTHOST
#SMARTHOST 192.168.222.23

Here the error does not occur
#SMARTHOST 192.168.222.23
#SMARTHOST

Here also the error does not occur
SMARTHOST 192.168.222.23
#SMARTHOST
