Bug#1068092: www.debian.org: Website states you could install using a live system which is misleading

2024-03-30 Thread doak
Package: www.debian.org
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: tldr+...@posteo.net

Dear Maintainer,

the website at [1] states that "The live images contain the
end-user-friendly Calamares Installer, a distribution-independent
installer framework, as alternative to our well known
Debian-Installer.". This is imho misleading in two ways.

First, the Calamares Installer is not available in the standard live CD
since it requires a graphical UI.

Second, it sounds like the Debian-Installer is an alternative in this
manner, i.e. it can be started from a running live system as well which
afaik is not the case. You need to start the installer from bootloaders
menu.

Would be nice to find a better, still dense, wording for this.

doak

Bug#1023812: git: Source package misses dependency to libssl-dev package

2022-11-10 Thread doak
Package: git
Version: 1:2.30.2-1
Severity: serious
Tags: ftbfs
Justification: fails to build from source (but built successfully in the past)
X-Debbugs-Cc: doak+...@posteo.net

Dear Maintainer,

The source package of `git` seems not to specify the dependency to
`libssl-dev`.

Steps to reproduce:
Compiling Git on a Debian live CD fails. These are the steps to
reproduce:
# apt build-dep git
git$ make

Make complains about missing OpenSSL header. Installing `libssl-dev`
fixes this.

Expected:
I would that after installing build dependencies for Git, it is built
successfully.

Best regards,
doak

Bug#910277: qemu: Shift key got stuck and can be relased only by pressing capslock

2018-10-30 Thread doak

Dear maintainer,

the issue was *not* related to Qemu.
I had changed my username including renaming home directory etc some time ago.
For some reason this caused the issue. Just reverting the username in
'/etc/passwd' back to the original one fixes it, chaing it back again leads to
the issue again.

I haven't done any further investigation (yet), but it could be related to
Gnome Shell or D-Bus. Anyway, it seems like an interesting corner case, though
not related to Qemu.

doak

Dear Maintainer,

when using the Qemu GUI (gtk), the shift key is not handled properly.
When pressed it got stuck and can only be "released" with capslock,
although this seems to still toggle shift for digit keys (to access
exclamation mark etc.).
It is very hard to input anything which involves the shifted layer. The
only reliable way is to use capslock exclusively.
I have tested this within the Grub bootloader [1] as well as within
Debian installer [2].

This issue does neither arise in Qemu monitor, nor if Qemu is started with
'-nographic' or using '-display curses'.

It seems to issue was introduced lately (probably by some dependent
package), because I havn't struggled with this issue in the past and I
am using Qemu quite often. I have updated Qemu packages on Septembre
17th the last time.

The same issue arise on both installer vaiants (non-graphical and

alt+right to switch to another console. Try doing the same as with first

Some more details:
* Shift key seems to get released as well when switching to Qemu monitor
   and back again.
* Similar behaviour with 'debian-live-9.5.0-amd64-cinnamon.iso' started in

Bug#902943: cryptsetup-initramfs: Encrypted rootfs in LVM is not found after upgrade

2018-07-03 Thread doak
Package: cryptsetup-initramfs
Version: 2:2.0.3-4
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Dear Maintainer,

After system upgrade the system is not bootable anymore due the
initramfs is unable to find the "source" for the rootfs and boot
   hangs.
Before the upgrade this worked seamlessly for a long time, UUID of FS
   did not change recently.

When breaking into initramfs (kernel argument 'break'), I am able to
activate the LVM logical volume manually with 'lvm lvchange -a y linux'.
Resuming the boot after that works, i.e. the passphrase is asked and
   boot continues after successful decryption.

Please let me know if I should provide more detailed debug
   information.

Bug#864190: openssh-server: Missing privilege separation directory: /run/sshd

2017-09-08 Thread doak

Please consider to ensure that the SSH privilege-seperation directory is in
place as long as SSH is installed (in contract to "as long as SSH is running').

Rationale:

>> RuntimeDirectory=sshd
>> Perhaps that would be a reliable way to fix the problem...
> That does indeed seem like a plausible approach. Committed to git
> master, thanks.

Although this seems to be very robust way to ensure the privilege-separation
directory exists and is empty, it disallows to run 'sshd' as a non-root user
because of missing '/run/sshd' if 'sshd' has not been started by 'systemd'.
My use case is to establish a tunnel between two clients without the need of
root privileges. The (potentially) missing '/run/sshd' prevents this.

I am not a security expert and do not know if this use case implies security
issues (e.g. breaks privilege separation), but security is at least not
decreased if '/run/sshd' exists even if 'sshd' is not running: A user is able
to create a patched copy of 'sshd' replacing '/run/sshd' with '/tmp/sshd' and
create a symlink from '/tmp/sshd' to any directory owned by root which is not
accessible to group or world-side (like e.g. '/run/log').
In fact, users will compromise system security if they are tempted to
workaround missing '/run/sshd' this.

With best regards,
doak

Description : Manage events and tasks using simple text files

Manage events and tasks using simple text files
etm is an acronym for event and task manager.
 .
In contrast to most calendar/todo applications, creating items (events,
tasks, and so forth) in etm does not require filling out fields in a
form. Instead, items are created as free-form text entries using a
simple, intuitive format and stored in plain text files.

Bug#750787: uhttpmock: use dh-autoreconf for better new-port coverage

2014-06-06 Thread Jackson Doak
Package: uhttpmock
Severity: normal
Version: 0.2.0-1
Tags: patch
User: ubuntu-de...@lists.ubuntu.com
Usertags: origin-ubuntu ubuntu-patch utopic

The ppc64el port requires a patch to libtool.m4. I don't think that's
in Debian yet, but when it is it will require autoreconfing a bunch of
packages to pick it up. uhttpmock could handle this quite easily by
using dh-autoreconf, which will update its copies of the libtool macros.

Hi,

catfish currently has 4 unfixed CVE bugs that affect the version in squeeze. All
of them were deemed to be minor issues (no DSA) according to the security
tracker, so I'd like to fix them via an upload to oldstable instead. Debdiff is
attached below.

-.B pngquant
-.RI "[ options ] \-map mapfile [pngfile [pngfile ...]]"
-.br
-.PP
-Note that it's \fBrequired\fP to specify the number of colors
(\fI\fP) or the \fImapfile\fP. Arguments in square brackets are
optional.
-.SH DESCRIPTION
-This manual page documents briefly the
-.B pngquant
-command.
-.PP
-\fBpngquant\fP quantizes one or more 32-bit RGBA PNGs to 8-bit (or smaller)
RGBA-palette PNGs using either ordered dithering or Floyd-Steinberg diffusion
dithering (default). The output filename is the same as the input name except
that it ends in \fI-fs8.png\fP or \fI-or8.png\fP (unless the input is stdin, in
which case the quantized image will go to stdout). The default behavior if the
output file exists is to skip the conversion; use \fI-force\fP to overwrite.
-.SH OPTIONS
-.TP
-.B \-force
-Overwrite existing output files.
-.TP
-.B \-ordened, \-nofloyd, \-nofs
-Use ordered dithering.
-.TP
-.B \-verbose, \-noquiet
-Print status messages.
-.TP
-.B NOTE:
-the \-map option is NOT YET SUPPORTED.
-.SH EXAMPLE
-Creating a new image with the number of colors reduced to 64:
-.TP
- pngquant 64 image.png
-.TP
-The resulting image will have 64 colors and will be saved as
\fBimage-fs8.png\fP.
-.SH AUTHOR
-pngquant was written by Greg Roelofs .
