Bug#480504: update-manager: button problem, manager found update, but, button failed
Update Manager is probably the main means by which most Debian desktop users will receive software updates. Bug#457291: what's going on with Adobe Flash player in Lenny?
Under current circumstances at least, losing Adobe Flash Player from a Debian desktop system is a big deal because of the loss of YouTube because, as I understand it, the free Flash players don't work with YouTube. Can you please elucidate on why Lenny will not have this package? Will there be a free alternative that will work enough? (I appreciate that 'enough' is vague) I'd just appreciate knowing what's going on, thanks. I understand this package must be problematic for Debian Stable because it downloads a static package name whose contents change and so this package breaks when Adobe's player is updated. Has anyone asked Adobe if they'll give their packages a version-specific filename and leave old versions on their server? Pete Boyd

Bug#444338: [Pkg-samba-maint] Bug#444338: README.Debian.gz has outdated sections

Bug#444338: [Pkg-samba-maint] Bug#444338: README.Debian.gz has outdated sections
That could be an opportunity to re-check that file and see whether there are some things we might want to add. I recommend the following additions: - There is a bug (https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4098) where by accounts created with 'net rpc user add' are disabled and need enabling. To work around this you can do this for each account you create: smbpasswd -e new username - Beware of 'invalid users = root' in smb.conf, which is enabled by default in Debian - Upgrading from Sarge to Etch: smb.conf's 'passwd chat' changed from '*Enter\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n *Retype\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n .' to '*Enter\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n *Retype\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n *password\supdated\ssuccessfully* .' Since Samba 3.0.23 'net groupmap modify' now needs to be 'net groupmap add'; additionally the RID has to be specified, using the form 'rid=RID' From 3.0.23's release notes: Group Mapping Changes = The default mapping entries for groups such as Domain Admins are no longer created when using an smbpasswd file or a tdbsam passdb backend. This means that it is necessary to use 'net groupmap add' rather than 'net groupmap modify' to set these entries. This change has no effect on winbindd's IDmap functionality for domain groups. Where once you might have done this: net groupmap modify ntgroup=Domain Admins unixgroup=samba-domain-admins type=domain -U root net groupmap modify ntgroup=Domain Users unixgroup=samba-domain-users type=domain -U root net groupmap modify ntgroup=Domain Guests unixgroup=samba-domain-guests type=domain -U root You now have to do this: net groupmap add rid=512 ntgroup=Domain Admins unixgroup=samba-domain-admins type=domain -U root net groupmap add rid=513 ntgroup=Domain Users unixgroup=samba-domain-users type=domain -U root net groupmap add rid=514 ntgroup=Domain Guests unixgroup=samba-domain-guests type=domain -U root

Bug#444338: README.Debian.gz has outdated sections
Package: samba Version: 3.0.26a-1 Samba's README.Debian.gz has various sections which seem outdated. I suggest they're removed: - The smbfs package does not support the 2.0.x Linux kernels anymore. This has been the case since the very first packages of the CVS sources that eventually became Samba 2.2. To use the smbfs package you need to run a 2.2.x kernel or later. This seems too outdated to be worthwhile. - Starting with the Debian packages for Samba 2.2, the Samba log files (for nmbd and smbd) have been moved to a new location: /var/log/samba/. The files also have new names: log.nmbd and log.smbd. The old files (/var/log/{nmb,smb} were moved to the new location. This seems too outdated to be worthwhile. Samba 2.2 has also experimental support for Primary Domain Controller. This means that a Samba server can act now as a PDC. There are no special flags needed to compile Samba with NT domain PDC support. Please read the NTDOM PDC FAQ at www.samba.org (Documentation section). Please note that NT domain PDC support is far from complete and is still experimental. - it might have been experimental in Samba 2.2 but surely it isn't now? I have a number of sites who've been using Sarge and Etch's Samba as a PDC without any issues.
Bug#444341: update-alternatives doesn't describe the generic names
Package: dpkg Version: 1.13.25 There seems to me to be a gaping hole in the update-alternatives program in that there's all this talk about generic names but no mention of what they actually are, so it is hard to use the program. For now, the man and info pages should at least advise using 'ls /etc/alternatives'; better still would be to list the generic names in the man and info pages. In the longer, term a switch to list the generic names would be great. Pete Boyd

Bug#414909: ctrl+left-arrow behaves inconsistantly with non-alphanumeric chars
Package: gedit Version: 2.14.4-8 If i have a block of text in a plain text file like this: ** kjdksfjklsdjfkldsj 1 22 33 ## aaa aa kjdksfjklsdjfkldsj * ** ** I can't use ctrl+left-arrow to jump from the 'k' in the first line to the beginning of the line. Similarly from the first 'a' in line 3 to the start of that line. Yet I can do this when the text consists of regular alphanumeric characters such as the 1's in line 2. I would want to do this kind of of operation when using ctrl+shift+left-arrow to highlight text for copying. If I were at the first 'a' in line 3 and used ctrl+left-arrow it would put the cursor at the first '3' in line 2, rather than at the first '#' in line 3; which is what it would do were I to do this at the first '2' in line 2. Perhaps this relates to why I am seeing the latter bug. ctrl+left-arrow from the end of line 4 would take me to the beginning of line 4 rather than to the next space amongst the '*'.

Bug#406241: Missing Recommends/Suggests for vpn clients
Without network-manager-{openvpn,vpnc,pptp} in Debian, especially for Etch, including nm-vpn-properties will serve to confuse people, potentially causing them to waste time researching what packages need to be installed, as I have done. Should nm-vpn-properties not be removed from network-manager-gnome until network-manager-{openvpn,vpnc,pptp} are available? At the very least there should be a caution in a README.Debian file.

Package: network-manager-gnome Version: 0.6.4-6 Its taken me ages to get network-manager-gnome working because I didn't read the documentation for network-manager. This could have been alleviated by a short README.Debian. The critical things to know are that it will appear automatically in the Notification Area and that you need to be in the netdev group. Here is my proposed README.Debian: 'network-manager-gnome provides a Notification Area applet for conveniently choosing wired and wireless networks in GNOME, KDE and XFCE. network-manager-gnome (by virtue of the fact it uses network-manager) requires users to be in the group 'netdev' for it to work. If users aren't in the group 'netdev' then it won't automatically appear, and work, in the Notification Area. network-manager-gnome uses network-manager. Please see the network-mananger documentation in /usr/share/doc/network-manager/README.Debian for further information.'

Package: beagle Version: 0.2.12-1+b1 /usr/share/doc/beagle/mozilla-extension/README says Beagle Extension: Index webpages you visit using the Beagle Indexing Engine. An Extension for the Firefox Browser. - instead of 'Firefox Browser' it would be better to say 'Mozilla Firefox / Iceweasel / Seamonkey / Iceape' It also says Installing: Open the generated beagle.xsi in Firefox or Mozilla. This will fire the Extension Manager. - this would be better said like this: 'Open the file beagle.xpi in Mozilla Firefox / Iceweasel / Seamonkey / Iceape to install it' (In particular note the fix to the filename 'beagle.xsi') -- Pete Boyd
Bug#413410: URI change in package description
Package: beagle Version: 0.2.12-1+b1 The package description includes the upstream URI as 'http://www.gnome.org/projects/beagle/'. It would be better to include the exact URI which is 'http://beagle-project.org/' -- Pete Boyd
Bug#413199: package description additions and amendments
Package: multisync Version: 0.82-8 The package description could do with explaining that 'this is an old version that relies on the Multisync framework and uses Multisync plugins. A newer version (package name multisync0.90), also available in Debian, instead relies on the Opensync framework and Opensync plugins.' As it stands you aren't told that there's a difference of Multisync/Opensync between the multisync and multisync0.90 packages so you have to dig deep to understand what their differences are and which to install. The package description also needs to say it is a GTK graphical user interface because multisync0.90 says it is and with multisync not doing so it leads one to believe multisync is not a GUI when comparing one against the other. Also, please remove the redundant To get all' near the end of the package description. For peoples' ease of use it would be really helpful if we could have this kind of list in the package description: 'libmultisync-plugin-all installs the following: libmultisync-plugin-backup - Backup plugin libmultisync-plugin-evolution - Ximian Evolution plugin libmultisync-plugin-irmc - IrMc Mobile plugin libmultisync-plugin-irmc-bluetooth - Adds Bluetooth support to the IrMC plugin libmultisync-plugin-opie - Opie plugin The following package might also be of use: synce-multisync-plugin - a plugin for WindowsCE devices'
Bug#413198: package description additions and amendments
Package: multisync0.90 Version: 0.90.19-1 The package description could do with explaining that 'this is a newer version of Multisync reliant on the Opensync framework and Opensync plugins, as opposed to the older version (package name multisync), also available in Debian, that relies on the Multisync framework and uses Multisync plugins.' As it stands you aren't told that there's a difference of Multisync/Opensync between the multisync and multisync0.90 packages so you have to dig deep to understand why there are two and which to install. Also, 'databetween' needs to instead be written 'data between' For peoples' ease of use it would be really helpful if we could have this kind of list in the package description: 'The following packages might also be of use: multisync-tools - the msynctool command-line utility opensyncutils - Command line utilities for libopensync opensync-plugin-evolution - Evolution plugin opensync-plugin-file - file plugin opensync-plugin-google-calendar - Plugin for syncing with Google Calendar opensync-plugin-irmc - IrMC plugin (IrDA and Bluetooth) opensync-plugin-palm - Palm plugin opensync-plugin-syncml - SyncML plugin opensync-plugin-sunbird - Opensync Mozilla Calendar / Mozilla Sunbird / Mozilla Lightning[?] plugin The backup, opie and synce plugins from Multisync are not yet provided for by Opensync in Debian Etch though they are available from the upstream Opensync project and their Debian repository.'
Bug#413097: there's a better URL for the tnef project
Package: tnef Version: 1.4.3-1 The package description gives a URL for TNEF of http://tnef.sourceforge.net/ but this page basically just says that the project URL is http://sourceforge.net/projects/tnef so it would be worth amending this in the tnef package description.
Bug#412692: RELEASE_NOTES_2.2 missing from Postfix 2.3.7
package: postfix version: 2.3.7-3 Postfix 2.3.7 seems to have dropped the file RELEASE_NOTES_2.2. This is necessary for people upgrading from Sarge to understand what has chanegd since Sarge's version 2.1.5. I believe this file was last shipped with version 2.3.6. The file RELEASE_NOTES.gz even includes a mention of it: Critical notes -- See RELEASE_NOTES_2.2 if you upgrade from Postfix 2.1 or earlier. -- Pete Boyd
Bug#381553: Please maintain your package and upload the latest upstream
Upstream has now released version 1.0.1: http://vobcopy.org/download/vobcopy-1.0.1.shtml This fixes the following Debian bugs: - bug 345324 choose the right dvd device from fstab - bug 319721 some dvd's show files ending in ;?, they should now work. - bug 341735 added some code to make -n and -m mutually exclusive Pete Boyd
Bug#412386: outdated paragraph in README.Debian
Package: clamav Version: 0.88.7-2 Does README.Debian still need to include this, it seems outdated to me: BACKPORTING Some effort has been made to ease the effort of backporting the source package to woody. If you pass the build time environment variable DEB_BUILD_WOODY (e.g., DEB_BUILD_WOODY=yes fakeroot debian/rules binary) the appropriate library dependencies and configure options will be passed. ucf handling also works differently, depending on the version of ucf available. Any problems or comments, please file a bug report - I would like to stabilize this for future sarge backports, so I am beginning the work now.
Bug#408108: this is an important issue to fix for Etch
I am waiting for your alternative icon set. really? if we had an alternative could it be used for Etch? I don't know if I could step up to this task (my skills lie in other areas), but I'm not convinced they're needed anyway, i.e. Is there anyone that can help Stefan Voelkel apply his alternative colour to the full set? Does the wider community understand that help applied here could make it into Etch, if indeed it can? Has anyone asked Unicko (http://unicko.blog-fx.com/) if he can provide his set (which we're now using) in a stronger colour? if not, I'd be happy to ask (if its necessary my colleague speaks Spanish) Everything at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IceWeaselIcon is either similarly too washed out or presumably infringing. I apologise if I've missed debate on this already - this bug seems to be the only mention of this issue in the bug database at least.
Bug#412182: small README.Debian inaccuracies
Package: 915resolution Version: 0.5.2-9 Here are some small inaccuracies in 915resolution's README.Debian that would improve its readability and usability. If you want to use it just activate it in the file etc/hibernate/common.conf. would read better as: 'If you want to use it just activate it in the file /etc/hibernate/common.conf'. Intel 800/900 Series VBIOS Hack : version 0.4.7 would now read slightly better as: 'Intel 800/900 Series VBIOS Hack : version 0.5.2' 5. To use specified resolution, you need to modify your X configuration file (If you use Xorg, it's /etc/X11/xorg.conf) Would read more appropriately as: '5. To use the specified resolution, you need to modify your Xorg configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf). For example:' If you are planning to use the suspend/resume mechanism and you are using a video mode that requires to run 915resolution, would read better as: 'If you are planning to use the suspend/resume mechanism and you are using a video mode that requires 915resolution,' Pete Boyd
Bug#412184: small improvements to cpufrequtils' README.Debian
Package: cpufrequtils Version: 002-2 cpufrequtils' README.Debian says This package provides very useful tools to get informations and set values about the CPUFreq Linux kernel features. but doesn't say what these utilities are. Also, the use of English could also be improved a little. It would be useful if instead it said something like 'This package provides very useful tools to get information about the CPUFreq Linux kernel features (with cpufreq-info) and set values for it (with cpufreq-set). Pete Boyd
Bug#408108: this is an important issue to fix for Etch
Please can we have one of these improved icons in Etch? the web browser is one of the most used applications in many desktop users' work flow and Iceweasel/Firefox probably the most popular choice of web browser. It is important that one's eye is able to find the icon for it in the panel, on the desktop or in the task switcher as quickly as possible to improve the pace at which one is able to use one's computer. As has been said, the current icon's light green colour makes it too difficult to see. You only have to look at most icons to see they tend to use primary colours. Against a background of other icons with primary colours the Iceweasel icon blends away into obscurity. For the sake of an improved Etch desktop I believe this issue is an important one to fix.
Bug#412000: clamav's NEWS.Debian is from before Sarge
Package: clamav Version: 0.88.7-2 Everything in NEWS.Debian in the various clamav packages (clamav, clamav-base, clamav-daemon and clamav-freshclam) is from before Sarge. That no longer seems to me to be newsworthy enough to need to bring to my attention.
Bug#411971: wipe man page uses 'K', should be 'k'
Package: wipe Version: 0.21-2 The man page says to use 'wipe -Kq -l 1440k /dev/fd0'. The 'K' here should be 'k'. I've reported this to the upstream maintainer. (incidentally, I don't know if this is my misunderstanding or not but when I tried the above with a 'k', 'wipe -kq -l 1440k /dev/fd/0', I got the response 'error: character 'k' is illegal in length description k') Pete Boyd
Bug#411656: ipw2200-source says non-existant ipw2200 package required
Package: ipw2200-source Version: 1.2.0-3 Severity: important The package description says The ipw2200 package is also required in order to make use of these modules. but there is no ipw2200 package.
Bug#411655: ipw2100-source says non-existant ipw2100 package required
Package: ipw2100-source Version: 1.2.1-3 Severity: important The package description says The ipw2100 package is also required in order to make use of these modules. but there is no ipw2100 package.
Bug#411525: Bluefish appears twice in GNOME application chooser
Package: bluefish Version: 1.0.7-1 Severity: normal When I right-click on an HTML file in GNOME and choose 'Open with Other Application...' I get two options for Bluefish, 'Bluefish' and 'Bluefish Editor'. There should only be one entry and that should be 'Bluefish Editor' as that is what Bluefish is known as in the Applications menu.
Bug#411036: scribus-template depends on scribus, rather than scribus | scribus-ng
Package: scribus-template Version: 1.2.4.1-1 Severity: normal I want to be able to have Scribus 1.3 series installed (scribs-ng) rather than the 1.2 series (scribus) and the accompanying scribus-template. (The upstream developers recommend using the 1.3 series and if I were to have both then they don't differentiate themselves in the GNOME menu). Both scribus-ng and scribus suggest scribus-template, but scribus-template depends on scribus so I can't achieve what I want.
Bug#407904: KVpnc crashes when creating new profile
I think the title of this bug report should be changed because the problem doesn't only occur when trying to add a Windows 2003 VPN. I see the same problem when merely choosing to create a new profile, giving a profile name then choosing 'OK'. As far as I can see KVpnc is the only GUI OpenVPN client in Debian Etch, so there is some onus upon it to work. -- Pete Boyd
Bug#403047: iceape-browser's description doesn't mention its also a WYSIWYG web editor
Package: iceape-browser Version: 1.0.6-1 Severity: normal iceape-browser's description doesn't mention that it is also a composer, a WYSIWYG web editor. Seeing as there is only this and OpenOffice providing a WYSIWYG web editor in Debian, I belive this is information well worth communcating. For many people a WYSIWYG editor is a hugely significant portion of software functionality expected in a distribution; I personally don't like using OpenOffice's web editor, which leaves only iceape-'browser' (that I know of).
Bug#402916: gftp-gtk doesn't allow for quickly jumping to particular files
Package: gftp Version: 2.0.18-16 Severity: normal gftp-gtk should jump to a particular file when you press the key coresponding to that file's first letter, and allow you to continue to refine this search method by typing more or use the cursor keys to navigate between all matching files, as Nautilus or GTK allows elsewhere. This feature greatly speeds up the finding of files when you have lots of files in a directory.
Bug#400492: s/addicting/addictive in package description
Package: enigma Version: 0.92.3-3 Severity: minor The package description has the word 'addicting' when it should instead say 'addictive'.
Bug#400242: README.Debian unneccesarily difficult to understand
Package: hpoj Version: 0.91-10 Severity: minor This sentence in README.Debian has unnecessary technical jargon, spelling mistakes and ambiguity: Upstream development for HP multifunction devices has been overtake by the HPLIP package, if you are running a USB or JetDirect interface you proably want to use HPLIP instead. I believe it would read better as: 'If you have a Hewlett-Packard multifunction device with a USB or JetDirect interface you would be better served by the 'hplip' package' (yes, I know one of the spelling mistakes is in bug 363933)
Bug#400243: foomatic-filters-ppds isn't as large as the package description makes it out to be
Package: foomatic-filters-ppds Version: 20061104-1 Severity: Normal The package description for foomatic-filters-ppds says: Again, you probably don't want this package unless you have a lot of disk space to spare and/or using the CUPS or PPR web interface to set up your printer queue is important to you. Since when was 17 megabytes a lot of disk space? This is the same size as samba-doc and that package description doesn't advise against installing it because of it's size. It makes life easier for people to have this package installed so I don't think it should be advised against for the relatively small amount of disk space it uses.
Bug#400251: print-server task includes gimp-print
Package: tasksel Version: 2.56 Severity: normal Tasksel's print-server task includes gimp-print, the Print plugin for the GIMP, which depends on gimp. This isn't necessary on a print server.
Bug#400254: make clearer distinction that there are manufacturer provided PPDs under free and non-free licences
Package: linuxprinting.org-ppds Version: 20061031-1 Severity: minor The package description says: This package includes a collection of free PostScript Printer Description files for PostScript (and clone) printers from various manufacturers, as distributed by LinuxPrinting.org. I don't think this makes a clear enough distinction to people that there are manufacturer provided PPDs under both free and non-free licences and that you get the free ones in one place and the non-free ones in another. I think it would help people if you were to also add this corollary: 'For PPD files released under non-free licences you have to go to the respective manufacturer's web site to get them.'
Bug#400259: package description speaks of pbm2ppa yet there's no package by that name
Package: pnm2ppa Version: 1.12-15 Severity: minor The package description says pnm2ppa supports color and is supposed to work faster than pbm2ppa. There isn't a package called pbm2ppa. I suggest you either remove mention of pbm2ppa or include a reference as to what it is.
Bug#400036: package description misses out some printers
Package: foo2zjs Version: 20060625dfsg-4 Severity: minor The Debian package description says this driver supports Minolta/QMS magicolor 2200 DL/2300 DL and HP LaserJet 1000/1005. The foo2zjs web site claims it supports Minolta magicolor 2200/2300/2430 DL, Minolta Color PageWorks/Pro L and HP LaserJet 1000/1005/1018/1020/1022. If the version in Debian also supports these additional printers (the upstream changelog doesn't add any of these post Debian's version) then it would be worthwhile saying so in the package description to help people looking for drivers for their printer.
Bug#399825: typos in package description
Package: icedove-traybiff Version: 1.2.2-9 Severity: minor - The thunderbird-traybiff and icedove-traybiff package descriptions have this mis-written: It allows provides tray - The icedove-traybiff package description has multiple mentions of Mozilla Thunderbird Pete Boyd

Bug#398836: logwatch documentation should say how its running
Package: logwatch Version: 5.2.2-5 Severity: minor When you install logwatch, from reading the man page or README.Debian, you have no idea how to get logwatch going. It would be useful if README.Debian said something like 'by default logwatch sets itself up using cron to automatically run once a day'.
