Bug#476888: ntp: Use /etc/ntp/ directory for configuration files (Version control support)

2008-04-19 Thread root
Package: ntp
Version: 1:4.2.4p4+dfsg-3
Severity: wishlist

SUGGESTION: Easier VCS support

The NTP configuration is not stored at /etc/ntp.conf, which
unfortunately makes it difficult to put in in version control
separately, because Version Control Systems (VCS) operate on directory
basis.

Please consider moving the file to

   /etc/ntp/ntp.conf

which would allod versioning the directory

  /etc/ntp/

Separately from the rest of the /etc structure.

Bug#472947: package sanitizer should be really debianized

2008-03-27 Thread root
Package: sanitizer
Version: 1.76-1
Severity: important

The sanitizer documentation should be corrected to reflect the real path and
filenames of sanitizer components.
For example, the html documentation file only mention wrong paths, even the
sanitizer file is refered to as sanitizer.pl while in debian it is just
sanitizer.
In another place it's said that an env var ANOMY should exist pointing to the
path to anomy, while the only place where I could find anomy is
/usr/share/perl5/Anomy

it's a bit boring to have to rectify all the informations provided in
/usr/share/doc/sanitizer to get something working

Bug#464348: fatal: service virtual requires privileged operation

Hello,
I just wanted to signal that I've exactly the same problem as described in bug

Of course I tried to send a followup for bug #315939, before creating a new
report but I always get a delivery failure for [EMAIL PROTECTED]
So I make my own report. Here's the postfix log for this error

 Feb 6 11:09:02 ns3 postfix/virtual[29378]: fatal: service virtual requires

I tried the same fix for virtual service as proposed in #315939 for mailman
service, and it seems to work

Bug#459929: linux-image-2.6.23-1-xen-686 does not boot under the hypervisor

2008-01-09 Thread root
Package: linux-image-2.6.23-1-xen-686
Version: 2.6.23-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

This kernel is not recognised by update-grub as a xen kernel.
There seam to be missing one or serval XEN_* options in the config.

Also the file /var/lib/linux-image-2.6.23-1-xen-686/xen-versions is empty
which it should not.

When adding a manual XEN entry to grub's menu.list with this kernel, the machine
reboots constantly after the hypervisor is loaded !

passing from one to another with left/right keyboard arrows. Each screen
provides a lot of information about the download (download progression,
elapsed time, speed, remaining download number).
Technically speaking, yougrabber is a lightweight, ncurses-based,
multi-threaded command line youtube.com video downloader with proxy support
made from scratch in ANSI C.

Bug#457073: samba: Newer Samba client fails to join Etch Samba PDC

2007-12-19 Thread root
Package: samba
Version: 3.0.24-6etch9
Severity: normal

I experience a problem when trying to join a Linux samba client in a Samba PDC.
The PDC is an Etch will all security packaqges applied.
When trying to join an Etch machine, everything is OK
When trying to join a Lenny machine (Samba 3.0.28 ATM), I get the following
error message :

(etchtest is the name of my machine which is a forme etch system et now a lenny)
etchtest:/var/log/samba# net rpc join -S PDC -U Administrateur
Password:
[2007/12/19 15:53:53, 0] utils/net_rpc_join.c:net_rpc_join_newstyle(304)
error setting trust account password: NT code 0x1c010002
Unable to join domain GT_DOM.

On the Etch PDC, I get the following log :

[2007/12/19 14:53:51, 0] rpc_server/srv_netlog_nt.c:get_md4pw(242)
get_md4pw: Workstation ETCHTEST$: no account in domain

_net_auth2: failed to get machine password for account ETCHTEST$:
NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

This is a PDC with LDAP backend.

The LDAP node associated to the machine seems to be created correctly.

The error occurs by switching form Samba 3.0.24 (etch) to 3.0.28 (current
lenny).
But errors have been reported with 3.0.26 also.

Am I missing something (I don't think so as it was working well with 3.0.24 so
the config is fine).
Is it a bug related to debian packaging ? to samba itself ?

By the way, Windows machine are joining without problem :-/

Many thanks,

Bug#456546: conflicting logrotate with roundcube-core

2007-12-16 Thread root
Package: roundcube
Version: 0.1~rc2-4

/etc/cron.daily/logrotate:
error: roundcube-core:1 duplicate log entry for /var/log/roundcube/sendmail

Looking into it shows that the roundcube and roundcube-core have there
identically files:
computer:/etc/logrotate.d# ls -al roundcube*

computer:/etc/logrotate.d# diff -u roundcube roundcube-core

I think, this happend when roundcube was updated with aptitude and
roundcube-core was newly installed
as a depend of roundcube.

Bug#407109: axiom: loops forever while )read'ing expression

2007-12-05 Thread root
Greetings, and thanks Tim! Does this mean that there is an issue with
the original missing mate error on the unbroken expression?

I did a clip of the line and fed it to Axiom. I suspect the issue is that
the line length was exceeded and clipped, leading to a shorter line being
fed to Axiom.

Separately, is there any clear path to accelerate the relevant
algorithms along the lines of Waldek's suggestions? Or is this
inadvisable?

I believe Waldek has identified 6 places where Axiom does GCDs.

If I were to attack the problem I'd probably:
   a) ask Waldek for those locations
   b) develop a set of increasingly expensive test cases for each one
   c) examine the detailed behavior with profiles to determine what costs
   d) make a change
   e) measure the difference
   f) loop back to c
   g) document the algorithms, measures, and results (conf paper?)

This is a fairly well contained problem and, if I had students, I'd
assign it as a path toward a publication. Perhaps with Google's
summer of code we could get a student to work on it.

At the moment all of my resources are pressing toward a new hyperdoc
that uses firefox so we can all drop the old code and use something
that is both portable and useful for things like Sage. The code and
pages I'm developing should work for all three systems. But as a
side-effect, I have no time to look into the gcd issues.

Camm,

I broke the original assignment into 16 smaller assignments and am
able to read the 16 terms. However, attempting to multiply the terms

This isn't a large expression for Axiom.
I've generated larger so I think Axiom can certainly handle it.
I'm checking a later version (the one on Debian is from 2005)

2007-12-03 Thread root
I've never used the )edit command since I always run Axiom in
an emacs buffer.

The issue is that the source filename is broken.
This will be fixed shortly as I'm reworking hyperdoc and
need to get the correct sourcefile information.

It might happen by the weekend but won't show up in Gold until the
January release. It'll be in silver shortly after it works.

Bug#445717: apache2: init script exits incorrectly when /etc/defaults not set

2007-10-07 Thread root
Package: apache2
Version: 2.2.3-4
Severity: normal

/etc/init.d/apache2 is a bit overzealous in checking the contents of
/etc/default/apache2. If NO_START=1, the init script exits almost
immediately. It never produces an error or any sort of informational
message to the user. If a user attempts to start up apache manually via
/etc/init.d/apache2 start, no message is returned and the user is left
thinking that it did, in fact start, when what actually happened was
that the script aborted before even looking at any command line options.

My system has a master server and two slaves, which we attempt to
keep in sync using iprop. The problem is caused because iprop attempts
to resend the same entry many thousands of times; this causes both
/var/log/auth.log and /var/lib/heimdal-kdc/log to grow on the slave
servers, and these quickly fill up over 3gb of log space in a day.
The messages in auth.log read:

 ipropd-slave[8760]: kadm5_log_replay: 2469: Entry already exists in
database

These repeat and repeat the same errors, often creating over 100,000
error messages in two hours.

I've reported this on the heimdal-discuss mailing list, and tried
the advice I received there: to stop the servers, truncate the logs
using the undocumented truncate_log command (or also simply zeroing
them), recopy the database manually or using hprop, and restarting.
This did not help. More recently I tried dumping the master data
base (using kadmin dump) then reloading. This did not appear to
work at first, but my second attempt has produced about half an hour
without a single error.

Bug#428004: svn-autoreleasedeb: local option is not documented

2007-06-07 Thread root
Package: svn-autoreleasedeb
Version: 0.12-1
Severity: minor

The changelog mentions the local option, but it is not documented.

Looking at the code, it appears that this option would stop it from
running dupload?

PS: Assuming that my interpretation is right: wouldn't no-dupload
(or similar) be a better name for the option? local is very
generic and open to (mis)interpretation...

Bug#420887: chkrootkit: LKM false positive with network aliasing (eth0:N)

2007-04-25 Thread root
Package: chkrootkit
Version: 0.47-1.1
Severity: normal

Hello,

since I have updated my system to have five IP aliases (eth0:0 ..
eth0:4), I get reports from chkrootkit that I have 4 processes hidden
from view.

/etc/cron.daily/chkrootkit:
The following suspicious files and directories were found:
/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-1.13.3/examples/.htaccess

INFECTED (PORTS: 465)
You have 4 process hidden for readdir command
You have 4 process hidden for ps command
chkproc: Warning: Possible LKM Trojan installed

A cross check with 'rkhunter' reveals no such hidden processes, and a
careful audit of system logs and comparison with backups before the
upgrade shows no suspicious activitiy, added files, or other things
pointing towards a rootkit (so I'm really sure my system is clean).

Since chkrootkit is known for reporting occasional false positives,
maybe this can be explained and fixed?

Thanks,

Jens ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

in 3.0/1. Finally, in 3.1 the CNTRL+escape key would bring up the

Bug#399776: apache2-mpm-prefork: apache2.2 maxclients limit freeze the box

2007-02-26 Thread root
Package: apache2-mpm-prefork
Version: 2.2.3-3.3
Followup-For: Bug #399776

Seems the same bug, but opposite. With this configuration:

StartServers 5
MinSpareServers 5
MaxSpareServers 30
MaxClients 100
MaxRequestsPerChild 1000

When apache2 needs more than 100 clients, I got this in the errorlog
file:

[Sun Feb 25 19:58:22 2007] [error] server reached MaxClients setting,
consider raising the MaxClients setting

and the box slowing down dramatically. I cannot access the machine, I can
only reboot. However the machine isn't died, but is very very very slow,
probably no more ram and swap is available.

With the old apache 1.3 no problem for years...

Bug#409896: nagios-common: [amd64] use_agressive_host_checking disables notification_interval

2007-02-06 Thread root
Package: nagios-common
Version: 2:1.4-3
Severity: normal

Hi!

I use nagios-pgsql (1.4-3) on full Etch 64bit AMD64.

As soon as I turn on use_agressive_host_checking, nagios only notifies once,
even where notification_interval is set to (for example) 30. As soon as I
turn off use_agressive_host_checking, notifications again come at their
intended interval.

Note that I can't reproduce this with nagios 1.4 on i386.

Any hints?

cheers,

Bug#407034: nagios-pgsql: scheduling downtimes doesn't work on AMD64

2007-01-15 Thread root
Package: nagios-pgsql
Version: 2:1.4-3
Severity: normal

Hi!

I recently migrated an i386 Nagios setup to amd64. Now, however, there are
problems with scheduling downtimes. When I schedule downtime for a
hostgroup (or group of services), Nagios happily sends out warnings in
the specified timeperiod. A look at downtime in the CGI shows some hosts
with multiple entries for the same scheduled downtime, and others with none
whatsoever. If I restart Nagios after scheduling downtimes, everything's as
expected, and warnings for hosts in scheduled downtime are no longer sent
out.

An example:

- no downtimes scheduled currently:
  http://www.waldner.priv.at/photos/nagios-downtime/no-downtime.jpg
- select hostgroup, select schedule downtime for all hosts..

http://www.waldner.priv.at/photos/nagios-downtime/select-downtime-for-group.jpg
- schedule downtime
  http://www.waldner.priv.at/photos/nagios-downtime/commit-downtime.jpg
- downtime from the CGI
  http://www.waldner.priv.at/photos/nagios-downtime/downtime-group.jpg
- select first host from downtime list
  http://www.waldner.priv.at/photos/nagios-downtime/viele-downtimes.jpg
- second host
  http://www.waldner.priv.at/photos/nagios-downtime/no-downtime-visible.jpg

In the postgres db it looks like I'd expect:

nagios=# select * from hostdowntime;

my / is on sdb; sda+sdc are set up as RAID=/dev/md0

At the moment, I boot my system on sdb; file systems of sdb have been copied
to md0.

After booting sdb, I can run successfully:
mount -o offset=2564014080 /dev/md0 /mnt/whatever

So, to boot and use md0 as root, I changed the boor arguments from
/vmlinuz ro initrd=/initrd.img root=/dev/sdb3
to
/vmlinuz ro initrd=/initrd.img root=/dev/md0 rootflags=offset=2564014080

In short, at bot time I am said that md0 is not mountable; then, I fallback to
some
prompt. Ther, I try to mount md0 manually, running exactly the same command:
mount -o offset=2564014080 /dev/md0 /mnt/
and I am said from memory invalid argument.

After 2 weeks trying EVERY THING I could think of, I have embedded losetup
from the main system in the ramdisk; once in the prompt, the procedure
became:
- losetup -o 2564014080 /dev/loop4 /dev/md0
- /scripts/dhp/losetup -o 2564014080 /dev/loop6 /dev/md0
- mount -o ro /dev/loop4 /root
- mount -o ro /dev/loop6 /root

First call is using losetup from the ramdisk made by update-initramfs; the
second one is using losetup I put in the ramdisk. 3rd call fails, 4th works.

This means losetup actually embedded in initramdisk does not support
properly the offset option. The result is that loop device can not be set
up, and everything fails.

I do not know if other scripts also have this failure (to assume that the
offset option is never passed), but please, check so.

I will do more testing within days, to see if rebuilding the ramdisk
manually and swicthing the losetup binary solves the problem; if yes, then
other scripts are OK.

Bug#399997: amanda-server: amlabel doesnŽt label tapes (Device or resource busy)

2006-11-23 Thread root
Package: amanda-server
Version: 1:2.5.1p1-2

I use Tandberg DLT-V4 on SATA port

rewinding, writing label DailySet1-005, checking label
amlabel: not an amanda tape (Device or resource busy)

ammt -f /dev/nst0 rewind ; dd if=/dev/nst0 bs=32k
gives this:

Bug#398169: lighttpd: invoke-rc.d fails on force-reload

2006-11-11 Thread root
Package: lighttpd
Version: 1.4.13-4
Severity: important

maybe related to bug #380080

the lighttpd logrotate config file calls invoke-rc.d with force-reload
which only stops the server, claims failure and doesn't attempt to
restart.

I changed it here to reload. works fine. force-reload is actually
restart in the init script, that may be the wrong thing. either way,
this is a big no-no.

one small thing I'm doing here different but should not be a problem - I
make sure I don't have leftover rails fcgi dispatchers that often stay
up after lighty exits. to the end of the stop section of the script I
added the command:

pkill -9 -P 1 fcgi

I doubt this should effect this force-reload problem in any way.

Reproducible (using build-improvements) both with and without clef.
When AXIOMsys is run directly ^D exits it. When AXIOMsys is run via
clef ^D\n exits it. With sman present Axiom crashes.

Apparently the ptys are opened in raw mode and do not interpret the
control characters but pass them down the pipe to AXIOMsys. However
the (read) from axiom simply gets the cntrl-D and tries to parse it.

I'm not really sure how this should be handled. Clearly you don't
want sman to open up a pty that interprets control characters.
Nor do you want lisp's (read) to interpret control characters.

Which raises the question why are you trying to pass cntrl-D
and what do you expect to happen? And why do you expect this?

Bug#395564: xserver-xorg: X server enters cpu loop on startup following 7.1 upgrade

2006-10-27 Thread root
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.1.0-5
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I just updated my workstation yesterday after the new version of X.org hit
testing; previously I was running 7.0-22 (? - whatever used to be the version
in testing.)

On X server startup, the server process goes into a CPU loop and does not
exit (or do anything useful) -- kill -9 is required to stop it. I have
attached my latest Xorg.0.log file and configuration file for your reading
pleasure, but don't see anything interesting to my eyes in either.

This appears to be distinct from bug 344110, in that strace -p pid does
not report any calls occurring, so either I don't understand how to use it
:-) or the loop is occurring in program code only.

Bug#390369: nbsmtp: Doesn't provide working /usr/sbin/sendmail as an MTA should

2006-09-30 Thread root
Package: nbsmtp
Version: 1.00-2
Severity: normal

This program provides mail-transport-agent, which means that
installing it on a system will break its ability to send mail normally
-- whatever package currently provides /usr/sbin/sendmail will be
uninstalled, because of the mail-transport-agent conflict, but nbsmtp
does not provide /usr/sbin/sendmail as required by policy 11.6 (it
provides /usr/bin/sendmail instead).
For example, on this system right now, mailx and reportbug do not
work properly -- I need to install esmtp after opening the editor in
order to send this bug report :-).
In addition, nbsmtp does not provide a sendmail-compatible interface,
so even symlinking /usr/bin/sendmail to /usr/sbin/sendmail doesn't give
me working email. IMHO nbsmtp should either:
  1. Stop providing mail-transport-agent and /usr/bin/sendmail, or
  2. Update its interface to be more-or-less sendmail-compatible and move
/usr/bin/sendmail to /usr/sbin/sendmail

Bug#387623: perl-suid: uninstallable, broken dependency

2006-09-15 Thread root
Package: perl-suid
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

perl-suid depends on a specific version of perl package, which is the origicnal
Sarge package. If you updadate your system,
perl package will receive security updates, and perl-suid becomes
uninstallable. I'm having trouble installing backuppc, which
depends on perl-suid

Bug#383554: 'pump' fails after receiving IP address, and card is disabled

2006-08-17 Thread Jeff Root
Package: pump
Version: 0.8.21-2
Severity: normal

Pump fails after obtaining an IP address from a DHCP
server. It sends
a DHCPDISCOVER request, gets a DHCPOFFER reply, then
sends a second
DHCPDISCOVER request. This gets a DHCPOFFER, which
sets my IP
address, then I get failed to set default route,
which then stops
the interface and disables the card.

(See daemon.log snippet below.)

I replaced 'pump' with 'dhcp3-client', and it all
works.

I've swapped between dhcp3-client and pump several
times, and the
failure came and went with pump.

I've seen similar reports on the 'net, and it appears
to be a
combination of 'pump' and Prism2 cards.

Bug#381428: cupsys: Device dialog does not how any entry

2006-08-04 Thread root
Package: cupsys
Version: 1.2.2-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

While trying to add a printer, the dialog never presents a device
selection, it stays empty. This way, I am not able to add any printer.
The folder backend was missing first and I copied it in from
/usr/lib/cups/b... It is looking like it does not even read the folder
contained.

Thank you for looking into the problem, kind regarts, Matthias Wieser

in /usr/sbin/amavisd-new I changed line 1131 from
close(main::stdin); or die Can't close main::stdin:$!;
to
close(main::stdin); #or die Can't close main::stdin:$!;

because the close was failing. Then the logs shows,

line 1134 is the fileno check which is failing,
open(STDIN,$stdin_from\0)
or die Can't reopen STDIN on $stdin_from: $!;
fileno(STDIN)==0 or die run_command: STDIN not fd0;

I added the following on 1129 to get some information (just after the
eval command and before the close commands)

die (stdin_from $stdin_from, stderr_to $stderr_to);

that generated the following log,

Jul 29 16:48:26 localhost amavis[16656]: (16645-01) run_command: child process

The system just has amavis disabled for now so that e-mail works. Any
ideas?

Bug#375035: (no subject)

2006-06-22 Thread root
Subject: kernel: Kernel 2.6.16 attempts to access root device before running
initramfs init
Package: kernel
Severity: important

After upgrading from 2.6.15-1-powerpc to 2.6.16-2-powerpc I received the
message VFS: Cannot open root device /dev/sda8 or
unknown-block(somenumber, somenumber)

I checked the initrd and it contains the necessary modules, but none of the
initrd's console messages appear on the console before the error message
which leads me to believe that the kernel is attempting to look at the root
device before loading the module needed to see it. The root device requires
the mesh module (scsi hba) which is in the initrd.

I have confirmed that the failed boot stops at the point where the initrd
is loaded by carefully watching the boot messages with a working boot
with 2.6.15. The point where the initramfs (initrd-xxx.img) is loaded appears
to be after the freeing memory line.

I indicate where the VFS: message appears during an unsuccesfull booth
with

Bug#368627: mysql-server-4.1: crashes every time immediately at startup, after upgrade to 4.1.11a-4sarge3

2006-05-30 Thread root
Package: mysql-server-4.1
Version: 4.1.11a-4sarge3
Followup-For: Bug #368627

I just upgraded my MySQL to version 4.1.11a-4sarge3 using 'apt-get upgrade'.
It now refuses to start, with a stack trace very similar to the original
submitter
of bug 368627. It has been working fine for months prior to the upgrade.

apt-get also upgraded libc6, I don't know if this is relevant, as I've had no
issues
with any other installed packages.

I have tried removing and reinstalling mysql-server-4.1 and related packages
such as libmysqlclient14 with no success. I also tried removing and installing
the previous version (4.1.11a-4sarge2) but this fails as well.

I checked the consistency of the tables (as suggested on the mysql website)
using
myisamchk but no errors were reported there.

Here's the stack trace:

OpenLDAP 2.3.14 Release
Fixed slapd pid file creation (ITS#4241,4251)

Quick hack:
Add this to the end of start_slapd() in /etc/init.d/slapd :
pidof /usr/lib/slapd $SLAPD_PIDFILE

Bug#353877: slapd: missing pid because of corrupted bdb db

2006-02-21 Thread root
Package: slapd
Version: 2.2.23-8
Followup-For: Bug #353877

I dont know why, but slapd corrupted my bdb database. Thats why slapd didnt
create a pidfile and didnt listen on the network interface (but it didnt
tell me why, argl). I lost my complete new ldap setup. Perhaps ldbm should
be the default backend ?

Bug#347199: [Axiom-developer] Re: Bug#347199: axiom-doc: Book is all-monospace after page 1019

2006-01-16 Thread root
At page 1019 of the Axiom book (the 1036th page of the pdf file), the text
becomes all-monospace. I believe this is due to a typo in the file
book.pamphlet, line 62236, where it says:

   {\tt n}. If {\tt n} is a negative number, it refers to the \tt n-th

Instead, the final \tt should have some braces, probably like so:

   {\tt n}. If {\tt n} is a negative number, it refers to the {\tt n}-th

fixed in next release.
