Bug#526770: Problems after 2.2.2-10 to 2.4.1-2 upgrade

2009-05-03 Thread shaul Karl
Package: nut
Version: 2.4.1-2
Severity: important

Hello,

I had a running 2.2.2-10. Upgraded today, probably a little while after
2.4.1-2 hit testing. I can see the following problems:

1) Can upsmon log to the UPS without problems?
I have commented out the firing of upsmon in the init.d script, fired the other
2 layers with it (init.d script), and then issued
upsmon -DDD 2 ~/upsmon.out ~/upsmon.out.
After physically disconnecting and restoring the UPS mains power, I hited
CTRL-C on upsmon. The upsmon.out file is attached. Note that I have taken out
(and restored) the power cable only once.

2) /etc/default/nut was removed by the upgrade. /etc/default/nut.dpkg-dist was
not.

3) The permissions I set on the serial port, that is connected to the UPS, were
modified even though I have them listed with dpkg-statoverride.

4) The configuration example files are not fully consistent with the valid
configuration. For example, upsmon.conf.sample mentions an allowfrom line.

Bug#524282: The indentation character in config, and other, files.

2009-04-15 Thread shaul Karl

Package: apache2.2-common
Version: 2.2.11-3
Severity: minor

Most of /etc/apache2/sites-available/default uses a TAB, '\t', for indentation.
The bottom section, starting with Directory /usr/share/doc/,
uses 4 white spaces, , instead.
Please use either '\t' or for the whole file.
In addition, I suggest that shell be used exclusively as the indentation
separator in all the config, and other, files.

Bug#520027: lvcraete, lvremove: explicitly mention in the man pages that --quiet is not implemented

2009-03-17 Thread shaul Karl

In any case, shouldn't there be more documentation about having classes of
messages, and the relation to --quiet? Or a suggestion to redirect to /dev/null
for complete silence?

 Nah, it is implemented.

It probably doesn't behave the way you would expect.
All it does is override any verbose or debug settings.

It does not remove any other output issued by the program
 to stdout or stderr.

So you'll still get warning messages.

I'd reject that patch upstream, but instead suggest
 discussing whether to
redefine --quiet to suppress additional classes of
 messages.

i wanted to change it to /srv/ftp soon anyway (debconf
 question with
said default). however, in the case here, i don't think
 it's a policy
 violation.

I think that using either /srv or /home makes it a policy violation:
1) As for /srv:
Quoting
http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/fhs/fhs-2.3.html#SRVDATAFORSERVICESPROVIDEDBYSYSTEM
 :
no program should rely on a specific subdirectory structure of /srv
existing or data necessarily being stored in /srv
2) For /home:
Quoting
http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/fhs/fhs-2.3.html#HOMEUSERHOMEDIRECTORIES
 :
no program should rely on this location.

In general, as far as I can tell, other servers, notably apache, don't rely on
a setup such as the one proposed here.

1) vsftpd.postinst creates /home/ftp. I think that this is a policy violation
because packages should not create home directories under /home/. In addition,
some users would prefer other arrangements.

2) The new pam.d/vsftpd breaks my usage of virtual users. I think that the
problem is described in #333187. I think that many sites would use ftp logins
that are not found in the traditional unix users db.

3) As an aside, I wish there were a /var/log/vsftpd/ directory. Didn't I
mentioned that when asking for a /etc/vsftpd/ directory? Shouldn't the init
script consult the conf file about the path of the log file?

Bug#514769: O: inadyn -- client to alleviate the requirements for an Internet name

2009-02-10 Thread shaul Karl
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I intend to orphan the inadyn package.

The package description is:
With this package the user can have an Internet name for his host
even though he might not have a registered domain name, a static IP,
or run a name server. It works by being a client of a supposedly open
name server and updating the server's records when the need arise.
This is sometimes reffered to as ddns, which is a shorthand for dynamic
DNS. http://inadyn.ina-tech.net has a link to a better defintion of
what Dynamic DNS system is. It also carries a list of service
providers. Some of these services are free of charge.
 .
This is a command line tool that is written in portable ANSI C with a
little OS abstraction layer. It is using a Multi-protocol file
transfer library, which is ported to all the main operating systems,
for the network related stuff. It can maintain multiple host names
and multiple service providers with the same IP address, and has a
web based IP detection which runs well behind a NAT router.
 .
 Home page: http://inadyn.ina-tech.net

kexec init script is installed S85. sysv-rc's reboot is installed S90.
Reboot uses its -f flag. There fore, I see no reason why kexec won't

-e completely, and make it more readable. Being more simple will answer
some of the questions that the original bug submitter has raised.

I am using extlinux, which is why I don't need mtools/dosfstools.
People who use syslinux, or the other variants, where mtools/dosfstools

Up to 3.71+dfsg-3 there were no dependencies on {mtools, dosfstools}.
Since {mtools, dosfstools} are utilities, it is likely that whoever
needs it will know to install it. Therefore, why force everyone to
install packages that they don't use?

2.2) Whenever log files are mentioned in vsftpd.1 man

Bug#474291: Does [EMAIL PROTECTED]' equivalent to `include'?

2008-04-05 Thread shaul Karl
1. The following can be useful to document the
@include directive. It was noted that one can use
include and @include directives at the same
configuration file. It is taken from
https://www.redhat.com/archives/pam-list/2008-April/msg00010.html

--- Nicolas François wrote:

The syntax for include and @include differ.

In a /etc/pam.d file, the syntax of a line is:
 type control module-path
 module-arguments

include is used as a control

@include is used as a type

Then the semantic is also different:

   include:
include all lines of given type from the
 configuration file specified as
 an argument to this control.

   @include:
parse a given file at the given location of the
 /etc/pam.d file

2. I think that @include obeys to the least expected
surprise rule. I am reading the administrator pam
guide. Even though the guide documents the include
directive correctly, unless I had written this reply I
would remember that the semantics of include is
actually the semantics of @include. Obviously, if I
had seen a correct configuration file that someone
else wrote, I might have notice that contrary to my
expectations, include is used as a control and not
as a type. However if I had tried to wrote a
configuration file from scratch, I might have wrote a
line with include as a type.
3. In order to better emphasize and differentiate
@include from include to the occasional reader,
perhaps one of the two should have renamed source?

Bug#472196: wontfix

2008-03-25 Thread shaul Karl
1. As I pointed out in another report, /etc/vsftpd
might be a suitable place for the empty directory.
vsftpd also let the user use more configuration files
for various tasks. /etc/vsftpd should be a natural
place for those configuration files.
2. The transition can be made easier by keeping
/etc/vsftpd.conf for a while, and activating vsftpd
from within the init script with the new configuration
file as an argument. A better way might be to use the
maintainer scripts to move the configuration file into
the new directory. Getting rid of /usr/doc involved
thousands of packages. Here it is only one file for
one package.
3. If I didn't convince you and you don't like many
open bugs for the vsftpd package, then I don't mind if
you close the report instead of leaving it in an
wontfix state.

I think it's unnecessary for a single file, and the
 transition would be
quite a hassle (cf. how long it took us to get rid
 of /usr/doc).

Bug#472329: /etc/vsftpd.conf is wrong: with the out of the box settings, /var/run/vsftpd contains vsftpd.pid

2008-03-23 Thread shaul Karl
Package: vsftpd
Version: 2.0.6-1
Severity: normal

/etc/vsftpd.conf claims, at the end, that

# Debian customization
#
# Some of vsftpd's settings don't fit the Debian
filesystem layout by
# default. These settings are more Debian-friendly.
#
# This option should be the name of a directory which
is empty. Also, the
# directory should not be writable by the ftp user.
This directory is used
# as a secure chroot() jail at times vsftpd does not
require filesystem
# access.
secure_chroot_dir=/var/run/vsftpd

This is wrong since, when couples with the out of
the box settings, /var/run/vsftpd contains vsftpd.pid.
I believe that a better solution would be to couple
the
empty directory with my #472196 wishlist bug and have
a /etc/vsftpd/empty directory.

Bug#345763: Having linux.tar.gz rather then linux.zip?

2006-01-04 Thread Shaul Karl
This message was bcc'ed to the upstream author in order not to get
his email address recorded in the BTS.

Hello,

Since you are already providing a .tgz source for Open BSD, would
you consider replacing the format of the linux source to linux.tar.gz?
To the best of my knowledge,
1. A .tar.gz, which is sometimes referred to as a .tgz, is generally
considered the standard format for any Unix source package.
2. A .zip file is usually used only with MS-Windows systems.
In short, having a linux.tar.gz rather then linux.zip would be
somewhat easier for any linux user.

and

  adduser --system --disabled-login testuser

both writes ! in the encrypted password field of /etc/shadow. Is that
the intended behavior? In this case there is no distinction between
--{disabled-password,disabled-login}, is there?

The way I interpret the OPTIONS sections of the man page,
--disabled-login should have a stronger effect then --disabled-password:

--disabled-login
Do not run passwd to set the password. The user won't be able
to use her account until the password is set.
--disabled-password
Like --disabled-login, but logins are still possible for example
through SSH RSA keys, but not using password authentification.

  Shouldn't --disabled-login use '!' and --disabled-password use '*'?
