Bug#472878: scsi drives are shown in syslog but their partitions can not be mounted.

2008-03-26 Thread shaulka
Package: installation-reports

I am trying to rescure a machine with
/debian/dists/lenny/main/installer-i386/current/images/floppy:

boot.img27-Feb-2008 19:32 1.4M
cd-drives.img 27-Feb-2008 19:33 1.4M
root.img27-Feb-2008 19:35 1.4M

After loading modules from cd-image, and detecting disks, sym53c8xx and related
modules
are installed. /var/log/syslog has records of the 2 scsi drives involved, as
well as the expected
partitions. However trying to mount the partitions from a shell gives a `No
such device' error.

It could be a kernel issue because I was never able to boot with 2.6.22. 2.6.20
could boot.

Other then that:
1.I seem to remember that there was an F1 Help while the installer asked for
the root
image. Yet pressing F1 only gives [[[~', or a similar printing, at the boot
prompt.
2. Won't drives.img better describe the contents and usage of cd-drives.img?

Bug#434013: docs claim named.pid file should is in another dir

2007-07-20 Thread shaulka
Package: bind9
Version: 1:9.4.1-1
Severity: normal

Qouting the `options Statement Definition and Usage' section of
http://www.isc.org/sw/bind/arm94/Bv9ARM.ch06.html#id2576593:

pid-file

The pathname of the file the server writes its process ID in. If not
specified, the default is /var/run/named.pid. The pid-file is used by programs
that want to send signals to the running name server. Specifying pid-file none
disables the use of a PID file ? no file will be written and any existing one
will be removed. Note that none is a keyword, not a file name, and therefore is
not enclosed in double quotes.

Therfore, I believe that having /var/run/bind/run/named.pid contradicts the
documentation. named.8 also
points to /var/run/named.pid.

  Personally I believe that chgrp bind /var/run/bind + chmod g+w /var/run/bind
+ having a pid-file /var/run/bind/named.pid in /etc/bind/named.conf.options
is preferable. This would also close #212659 (which is tagged `will not fix').

2007-07-09 Thread shaulka
Package: login
Version: 1:4.0.18.1-11
Severity: normal

I had a login (lower case) prompt and mistakenly put my elbow on the keybord.
As a result the following was entered as the user name:

[[C4[[D[[E[17~78[18~[19~

so I got a LOGIN INCORRECT message. In addition, I was prompted for the
user name and pssword by upper case letters ( HOSTNAME LOGIN and PASSWORD).
Echoing the user name that I entered was also in upper case letters.
I couldn't login, even though I entered the correct password (LOGIN
INCORRECT).
Finally I got a MAXIMUM NUMBER OF TRIES EXCEEDED (5) message. After that,
the contents of /etc/issue was displayed and login got back to the usual lower
case
letters.
  Now I can login again.

Bug#401314: enable debug=true with logging and running in the background

2006-12-02 Thread shaulka
Package: rootstrap
Version: 0.3.24-1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

The following enables debugging as well as logging with the -o
switch or by redirecting the output to a file, while avoiding the case
where the UML stdin is taken from the console and its stdout is
directed to a file. I believe that preventing debugging when a log
file is being used makes debugging more difficult.
It also enables running rootstrap in the background.
There is also a somewhat more obvious prompt for the UML
terminal and a usage of UML exitcode.

Bug#397309: [Pkg-uml-pkgs] Bug#397309: restoring with /etc/network/if-*down.d/uml-utilities

2006-11-06 Thread shaulka
On Monday, November 6, 2006 8:42 pm, Mattia Dongili wrote:

Well, I'd say yes. If for no other reason, to tell the user what we are
 doing.

Still, are other entries in the interfaces verbose like that? One can
expect that the admin who wrote the stanza in the interfaces file
tested it and now he just expect to have the interface up with no
more hassle.

So we have 2 undocumented options for /etc/network/interfaces, right?

Wrong. These are hardly ifupdown (or, if you like, /etc/network/interfaces)
options. If at all, these are uml-utilities options. To quote interfaces.5:

Additionally, all options given in an interface definition stanza
are exported to the environment in upper case with IF_ prepended
and with hyphens converted to underscores and non-alphanumeric char-
acters discarded.

I, too, am not an ifupdown expert and I was confused about it myself at the
beginning. Think about that quote when you take another look at the tap1
example from /usr/share/doc/uml-utilities/examples/interfaces.example.

hummm, did arp -Ds succeded in the first place?

Yes. arp -Ds succeded in the first place It succeded in the sense
that the arp table was modified. I am not sure if I succeded to get
rootstrap to use the host network, but this is tangantile for this
discussion. Actually, it might not be tangtaile. Perhaps the fact
that I still haven't ran rootstrap succesfully is the reason for the
failure. More specifically, I get a `to be determined' answer from
arp:

$ /usr/sbin/arp -n | grep -v ether
Address HWtype HWaddress Flags Mask
Iface
192.168.1.120* from_interfaceMP
eth0

In any case, as I have already pointed out in my second report to
the BTS,

arp -i ${IF_UML_PROXY_ETHER} -d $i pub

does remove the uml line from the arp table.

Bug#394857: pbuilder-ddoc: inaccurcies in `Chapter 3. Using User-mode-linux with pbuilder'?

2006-10-23 Thread shaulka
Package: pbuilder
Version: 0.159
Severity: normal

Quoting Chapter 3. Using User-mode-linux with pbuilder:

---

Table of Contents

1. Configuring user-mode-linux
2. Configuring rootstrap
3. Configuring pbuilder-uml
4. Considerations for running pbuilder-user-mode-linux
5. Parallel running of pbuilder-user-mode-linux
6. Using pbuilder-user-mode-linux as a wrapper script to start up a virtual
machine

NOTE that since October 2004, pbuilder for user-mode-linux is not distributed,
since user-mode-linux itself is broken in Debian. A functional user-mode-linux
will hopefully be fixed before Debian etch release, but it is not quite
determined yet if will be ready for etch.

It is possible to use user-mode-linux by invoking pbuilder-user-mode-linux
instead of pbuilder. pbuilder-user-mode-linux doesn't require root privileges,
and it uses the copy-on-write (COW) disk access method of User-mode-linux which
typically makes it much faster than the traditional pbuilder.

---

t could be my non native English, but is `pbuilder for user-mode-linux'
different from
pbuilder-user-mode-linux? In addition, doesn't testing have user-mode-linux and
pbuilder-user-mode-linux? Doesn't that imply that they are likely to be in
etch?

This is wrong. It will do waht is expected.

ntp user and group were deleted.

2006-08-29 Thread shaulka
1) I can confirm that *purging* the ntp-* packages removes the ntp user and
group.
I don't have logs but after the purge the ntp user and group are no longer
there.

2) I believe the adduser line in the (new) ntp package will only add an ntp
group,
not an ntp user. This is according to my understanding of the adduser man page.

From: Margarita Manterola [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Subject: Bug#248574: Intent to NMU

Together with Maximiliano Curia, I have prepared an NMU of tkman
 that fixes
 this important bug.

The fix is accomplished by applying the patch provided by Martin
Forssen.Other than that patch, only the debian/control file was
 changed, to comply
 with the latest policy changes.

I'm attaching the interdiff output of the package that I have
 prepared. I
will be uploading the NMU to the delayed queue. I hope you find it
 useful.

There is a related bug against fai-nfsroot: #365035

The test before the call to mkrw is intented to help avoiding another
configuration
parameter in the case some of the ddirectories in $@ are not installed, such
as
/etc/lvm.

As an aside, I believe that the default value of 10m for size is too large in
the
sense that it wastes memory and, more importantly, takes presiuse resource
from systems with low memory.

Bug#364696: /usr/local/share/fai - $FAI_LOCATION

2006-04-24 Thread shaulka
Package: fai-doc
Version: 2.10.1
Severity: normal
File: /usr/share/doc/fai-doc/fai-guide.html/ch-instprocess.html

Section 6.11 (Hooks) has the following:

In the first part of fai, all hooks with prefix confdir are called. Since the
configuration directory /fai is mounted in the default task confdir, the hooks
for this task are the only hooks located in $nfsroot/fai/hooks on the install
server. All other hooks are found in /usr/local/share/fai/hooks on the install
server

I believe that /usr/local/share/fai/hooks from above should be replaced by
$FAI_LOCATION/hooks.

Bug#363521: typo: extrace - extract

2006-04-19 Thread shaulka
Package: fai-client
Version: 2.10
Severity: minor

  I assume you meant extract:

$ grep -C4 extrace /usr/lib/fai/subroutines-linux
mkrwsize() {

# save all dirs and files under directory $2
# mount tmpfs on top of dir $2
# extrace dirs and files into tmpfs

if [ ! -d $2 ]; then
echo WARNING: $2 is not a directory. Cannot make it writeable.
return

kudzu depends on libnewt0.51. However libnewt0.51is no longer in unstable. It
looks
as if it was replaced by libnewt0.52.

Bug#355195: make-fai-bootfloppy: getopt instead of getopts

2006-03-03 Thread shaulka
Package: fai-server
Version: 2.9.1
Severity: wishlist
File: /usr/sbin/make-fai-bootfloppy
Tags: patch

I wanted to add a syslinux opt for make-fai-bootfloppy but realized that
many of the
more meaningful letters for opts are already taken. I suggest using getopt
instead of
getopts because getopts can parse long options too.

As an aside, I believe that with syslinux it would be easier to squize some
more
room out of a standard floppy. In adddition, I was able to boot with a syslinux
based
floppy where a grub based floppy failed. I am not sure if the reason is that
grub can not
handle the way make-fai-bootfloopy formats the floppy.
