Bug#814678: cron: No information given about syntax error in /etc/crontab
Package: cron Version: 3.0pl1-124 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, *** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate *** * What led up to the situation? Have a syntax error in /etc/crontab * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? see above * What was the outcome of this action? A generic useless non-informative error message is logged in /var/log/syslog whih reads more or less (quoting by memory): Syntax error in /etc/crontab. This file will be ignored * What outcome did you expect instead? The message should at the very least include the exact row and column where the syntax error is, and ideally a description of the error (e.g. "XXX expected" or "invalid YYY") It's absolutely ridiculous that you have to figure out for yourself where the error is in potentially thousands of lines. *** End of the template - remove these lines *** -- Package-specific info: --- EDITOR: --- /usr/bin/editor: /bin/nano --- /usr/bin/crontab: -rwxr-sr-x 1 root crontab 35880 Jul 3 2012 /usr/bin/crontab --- /var/spool/cron: drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 May 3 2013 /var/spool/cron --- /var/spool/cron/crontabs: drwx-wx--T 2 root crontab 4096 Jul 3 2012 /var/spool/cron/crontabs --- /etc/cron.d: drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Apr 27 2015 /etc/cron.d --- /etc/cron.daily: drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Dec 20 2014 /etc/cron.daily --- /etc/cron.hourly: drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 May 3 2013 /etc/cron.hourly --- /etc/cron.monthly: drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 May 3 2013 /etc/cron.monthly --- /etc/cron.weekly: drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 May 3 2013 /etc/cron.weekly -- System Information: Debian Release: 7.6 APT prefers oldstable APT policy: (500, 'oldstable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 3.2.0-4-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages cron depends on: ii adduser 3.113+nmu3 ii debianutils 4.3.2 ii dpkg1.16.15 ii libc6 2.13-38+deb7u6 ii libpam-runtime 1.1.3-7.1 ii libpam0g1.1.3-7.1 ii libselinux1 2.1.9-5 ii lsb-base4.1+Debian8+deb7u1 Versions of packages cron recommends: ii exim4 4.80-7 ii exim4-daemon-light [mail-transport-agent] 4.80-7 Versions of packages cron suggests: ii anacron2.3-19 pn checksecurity ii logrotate 3.8.1-4 Versions of packages cron is related to: pn libnss-ldap pn libnss-ldapd pn libpam-ldap pn libpam-mount pn nis pn nscd -- Configuration Files: /etc/crontab changed [not included] -- no debconf information
Bug#783550: mrtg: install didn't create /var/www/mrtg nor /etc/cron.d/mrtg
Package: mrtg Version: 2.17.4-2 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, *** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate *** * What led up to the situation? apt-get install mrtg * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? * What was the outcome of this action? 1 No /var/www/mrtg directory was created 2 No mrtg.cfg file was created ANYWHERE 3 No cronjob was added, i.e. no /etc/cron.d/mrtg file * What outcome did you expect instead? All of the above should have been created. A directory /usr/share/mrtg was created which contains png files. So maybe instead of (1), a file should have been added to apache conf.d directory? I had previously installed the mrtg before on the same server before, and then uninstalled it. I'm almost sure the first time it did work as expected (which is why I expected it, besides because all the tutorials out there tell you that is what's going to happe) Did I dream it? Am I confusing with cacti installation? Anyway, what's sure is that apt-get mrtg does not result in a working installation nor does it give you hints of the missing steps. *** End of the template - remove these lines *** -- System Information: Debian Release: 7.6 APT prefers oldstable APT policy: (500, 'oldstable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 3.2.0-4-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages mrtg depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.49 ii libc6 2.13-38+deb7u6 ii libgd2-xpm 2.0.36~rc1~dfsg-6.1 ii libpng12-0 1.2.49-1 ii libsnmp-session-perl 1.13-1.1~deb7u1 ii perl 5.14.2-21+deb7u2 ii perl-modules 5.14.2-21+deb7u2 ii zlib1g 1:1.2.7.dfsg-13 mrtg recommends no packages. Bug#766293: exim4: dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config: question about root/postmaster user not asked any more
Package: exim4 Version: 4.80-7 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, *** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate *** * What led up to the situation? * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? After a fresh install of Debian 7, I ran dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config once I selected "internet site; mail is sent and received directly using SMTP" as the answer to the first question then entered all the most common values for send-only email from localhost only. There was one question that asked for a list of real users to deliver all email for root and postmaster. At first, I only entered "root" here. After ending the process, I realized I should have also added a real email address, such as myrealn...@gmail.com. So I ran dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config again. * What was the outcome of this action? I was presented all the same questions again. So far so good. All fields were pre-filled with the answers I had given the first time, i.e. current configuration; so far so good. BUT the question about the root users was missing!! * What outcome did you expect instead? I should have been asked ALL the same questions as before. I should be given an opportunity to change the value for that particular question. It's actually the only one I wanted to change and it was the one that I was not asked. *** End of the template - remove these lines *** -- Package-specific info: Exim version 4.80 #3 built 02-Jan-2013 18:59:25 Copyright (c) University of Cambridge, 1995 - 2012 (c) The Exim Maintainers and contributors in ACKNOWLEDGMENTS file, 2007 - 2012 Berkeley DB: Berkeley DB 5.1.29: (October 25, 2011) Support for: crypteq iconv() IPv6 GnuTLS move_frozen_messages DKIM Lookups (built-in): lsearch wildlsearch nwildlsearch iplsearch cdb dbm dbmjz dbmnz dnsdb dsearch nis nis0 passwd Authenticators: cram_md5 plaintext Routers: accept dnslookup ipliteral manualroute queryprogram redirect Transports: appendfile/maildir/mailstore autoreply lmtp pipe smtp Fixed never_users: 0 Size of off_t: 8 Configuration file is /var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated # /etc/exim4/update-exim4.conf.conf # # Edit this file and /etc/mailname by hand and execute update-exim4.conf # yourself or use 'dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config' # # Please note that this is _not_ a dpkg-conffile and that automatic changes # to this file might happen.
