Bug#727309: unifont: New version available

2013-12-05 Thread unifoundry

I have had conflicting requests from Fontforge users on their preferred
representation of Unicode unassigned code points in Unifont. So I have
decided to put together a poll to solicit feedback from GNU/Linux
Fontforge users on how they want those glyphs rendered. The poll is
here:

http://unifoundry.com/poll_unassigned/index.php

Fontforge uses Unifont for its sample glyphs if Unifont is installed on
a system. Because Fontforge users create fonts, many of which are free,
Unifont truly has a multiplier effect in combination with Fontforge. So
I want to make sure that most Fontforge users get what is most useful
and intuitive to them in this next release (at least the ones who care
to respond to the poll). I'll let this poll run for a week or two
before finalizing the Unifont 6.3 release for Debian. I am eager to get
the release done but want to let the poll run for a bit first.

Bug#730870: pu: unifont -- RoM; NMU Version in Stable Undoes Ubuntu Fix

2013-11-30 Thread unifoundry
Package: release.debian.org
User: release.debian@packages.debian.org
Usertags: transition
Tags: wheezy
Severity: normal

I am requesting that the version of package Unifont in Testing, unifont
1:5.1.20080914-4, be included in the upcoming Wheezy point release
primarily to align with Colin Watson's wishes for Ubuntu. Before the
NMU was uploaded to Debian this year, Colin made the following change in
the Unifont package on Ubuntu, for Ubuntu:

unifont (1:5.1.20080914-1.1ubuntu1) precise; urgency=low

  * Use maintscript support in dh_installdeb rather than writing out
dpkg-maintscript-helper commands by hand. We now simply Pre-Depend
on a
new enough version of dpkg rather than using
'dpkg-maintscript-helper
supports' guards, leading to more predictable behaviour on upgrades.
-- Colin Watson email address hidden Mon, 13 Feb 2012 13:43:00
+

The Debian NMU of Unifont made its way to Ubuntu and did not incorporate
Colin's fix, so the upload had the effect of removing his fix from
Ubuntu. The Unifont version in Testing does incorporate his fix, and
closed a bug that he filed on Debian (#659730) requesting this change.

These other significant changes were made in the version in Testing:

* Changed Section: to fonts for most debian/control entries to conform
to current Policy; the older x11 (and now incorrect) Section entries
thus no longer need overriding.

* Updated packaging to conform to the policy version suitable for Wheezy
Stable (3.9.4), notably for the revised font handling requirements.

* Added hardening to debian/rules.

Allowing this update into Stable will harmonize what is in Debian with
what Colin Watson wanted in Ubuntu; it will use a debian/control file
that does not require Section overrides during building; and it will use
hardening.

I am attaching the changelog.

Thanks,

Paul Hardy

unifont (1:5.1.20080914-4) unstable; urgency=low

  * debian/control changes:
- Updated packaging to conform to Debian Policy version 3.9.4.
- Section tag is listed for each package; unifont-bin is in
Section x11, and all other packages are in fonts.
- Added explicit Depends entry for xfonts-utils for each package,
as per Debian Policy Manual 3.9.4 Section 11.8.5, Packages
  providing fonts, item 9.
- Added Depends for fontforge to unifont-bin; removed weaker
  Suggests for fontforge from unifont-bin.
  * debian/rules - CPPFLAGS is now declared and used, for hardening.

unifont (1:5.1.20080914-3) unstable; urgency=low

  * Changed debian/control unifont Section entry from x11 to fonts.
  * Changed debian/control Depends entries for unifont and ttf-unifont
to add Depends: ${misc:Depends}.
  * Corrected changelog entries for 1:5.1.20080914-2.
  * debian/rules uses dpkg-buildflags to set CFLAGS LDFLAGS, for
hardening.

unifont (1:5.1.20080914-2) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Colin Watson ]
  * Use maintscript support in dh_installdeb rather than writing out
dpkg-maintscript-helper commands by hand. We now simply Pre-Depend on a
new enough version of dpkg rather than using 'dpkg-maintscript-helper
supports' guards, leading to more predictable behaviour on upgrades.
(Closes: #659730)

  [ Paul Hardy ]
  * Applied above changes that Colin Watson provided in bug report,
simplifying debian/ file structure and making the Unifont package
more suitable for Ubuntu. The one exception is I didn't create
the ttf-unifont.maintscript file, because /etc/defoma/ no longer
exists on Debian or Ubuntu.
  * debian/copyright - updated copyright and licensing information to
reflect the latest source code changes and license agreements.
  * debian/README.Debian - minor change now that Etch is no longer
the current release.
  * README - updated documentation to cover font modifications and the
latest license agreements.
  * Corrected changelog entries for 1:5.1.20080808-1 and 1:5.1.20080914-1.2.
  * debian/control changes:
- Build-Depends: debhelper (= 8.1.0~), per Colin Watson's above changes.
- No separate uploaders.
  * Created debian/source/format file.
  * Removed debian/TODO file as it referred to defoma, which is no longer used.
  * debian/watch now looks at ftp.gnu.org for upstream releases.
  * Accept NMU of Christian Perrier. (Closes: #634981)
  * Accept NMUs of Paul Wise and Samuel Bronson. (Closes: #697999, #698067)

unifont (1:5.1.20080914-1.3) unstable; urgency=low

  * Non-maintainer upload.
  * debian/rules: Split and inline install target into binary-arch and
binary-indep and adjust dependencies. (Without this,
dpkg-buildpackage -B ends up running the build-indep rules and dying
on the buildds.)
  * debian/rules: Also fix so dpkg-buildpackage -j works, and only

Bug#698191: ttf-unifont: Default Character should be U+FFFD REPLACEMENT CHARACTER

2013-10-26 Thread unifoundry
This is optional under The Unicode Standard, so I had it listed in a
TODO/What's Next list instead of listed as a bug. The Unicode Standard
5.0, which was the authority for Unifont 5.1, allows simply displaying
nothing (The Unicode Standard 5.0, p. 155). Using the space character
as a replacement character was common in BDF fonts, and Unifont is a BDF
font at heart. The space character was used in Unifont as a replacement
character from its early days.

However, this is changed to U+FFFD in the latest upstream version.

Bug#698194: unifont: Wrong width for box-drawing characters (at least)

2013-10-26 Thread unifoundry
The Unicode Standard doesn't specify character widths on purpose, so you won't find such information there. So I had this listed as a TODO/What's Next entry rather than listed as a bug. This block is also not a copy of a Microsoft DOS or Microsoft Windows code page. However, the latest upstream version of Unifont includes this change.Paul Hardy

Bug#497326: ttf-unifont: adjust combining mark positioning

2008-08-31 Thread unifoundry
Package: ttf-unifont
Version: 1:5.1.20080820-1
Severity: normal
thanks

The unifont.ttf font handles combining marks such as accents as
zero-width. This means that if they are used, they are superimposed on
a following glyph. This is the way combining marks are entered on many
Input Method Editors. However, it would be better if the positioning of
combining marks were adjusted so that they are superimposed on a
preceding glyph to match the Unicode Standard. This would improve
Debian Unicode support.

Bug#495729: unifont: Hangul glyphs use fonts with ambiguous licensing

2008-08-19 Thread unifoundry
Package: unifont
Version: 19990430-1
Severity: important

The unifont package has always used Hangul Syllables glyphs generated
from Hanterm fonts. Versions of unifont up to 1:1.0-4 also used glyphs
from Hanterm fonts in the U+1100..U+11FF range. According to Debian
Developer Changwoo Ryu, maintainer of bf-utf-source, xfonts-baekmuk, and
other Debian packages, the Hanterm fonts were incorrectly listed in
FreeBSD and elsewhere as being covered by the GNU Public License.
Changwoo has told me that parts of Hanterm are covered under the GPL,
but not the fonts. Concern over ambiguity in the terms of Hanterm font
licensing resulted in their not being included in the hanterm Debian
package.

Changwoo Ryu removed the existing Hangul glyphs from the file
unifont.bdf in his bf-utf-source package, replacing them with Hangul
Syllables glyphs in the public domain. The most expedient workaround to
the Hanterm fonts license ambiguity for the unifont package is to
incorporate Changwoo's Hangul Syllables block from the bf-utf-source
Debian package.

This appears at http://www.larabiefonts.com/help.html -- Embedding

that the use granted for his TrueType fonts don't apply to OpenType

the package at hand) -- he does mention that he didn't create all the

He says he'll accept donations, but states that the font is freeware
(not shareware).

I'd like to adopt this package. I've added thousands of glyphs to
the unifont font downloadable on my website, at
http://unifoundry.com/unifont.html. That website has the latest version
of the font, plus GPL software that I wrote. Roman Czyborra, the
original creator of GNU Unifont, asked me to get my changes into Debian.

I am not yet a Debian developer, so I'll need someone to sponsor me.
Anyone who is interested, please email me. Thanks!
