Package: firmware-amd-graphics
Version: 20230210-5

Dear Maintainer,

Rembrandt GPUs in combination with certain Parade TCONs are suffering from
irrecoverable system hangs when PSR is enabled (as it is by default). There is
a Gitlab ticket for this issue here:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/2443#note_1966723

An upstream firmware patch has landed which mitigates the issue:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-
firmware.git/commit/amdgpu/yellow_carp_dmcub.bin?id=9dbd8ec28fd810e5f4f9da41452aba74896a5564

Please consider backporting this patch to Bookworm. Thank you very much.

Bug#1040184: xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu: amdgpu causes unrecoverable system hangs on Rembrandt systems with certain laptop panels

2023-07-02 Thread Gabriel Wayne
Package: xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu
Version: 23.0.0-1
Severity: important
Tags: patch upstream
X-Debbugs-Cc: linux.footwork...@simplelogin.com

Dear Maintainer,

Laptops with Rembrandt GPUs and certain panels are experiencing total and
unrecoverable system hangs with the following error:

amdgpu :04:00.0: [drm] *ERROR* [CRTC:67:crtc-0] flip_done timed out

After this error occurs the panel is completely frozen and a hard reboot is
required in order to recover.

This has been diagnosed as a problem with PRS-SU on some Parade TCONs running
on older firmware. There is a gitlab ticket which references patches confirmed
to fix the problem: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/2443

Please incorporate these patches into the next Debian stable release if
possible. Thank you.

Bug#925622:

2019-03-27 Thread Wayne Rowcliffe
On further investigation, what actually happened is there are apparently
new shortcuts that have been added for "Switch to Application", which use
the same `` key bindings as I had been using, which were then
hopping me around between workspaces in a confusing order because they were
jumping around based on some application ordering that I don't quite
understand.

I am not sure why these aren't showing up in the keybindings section of the
control center app. Maybe I have the wrong version for that...

I was able to disable all of those in dconf-editor and now things are
working as expected again.

Bug#925622: gnome-shell: Workspace numbering is wrong when doing "Switch to Workspace" shortcuts

2019-03-27 Thread Wayne Rowcliffe
Package: gnome-shell
Version: 3.32.0-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I just upgraded to gnome-shell 3.32 and noticed the "Switch to Workspace X"
shortcuts
aren't working as expected. I normally have 5 static workspaces configured, and
use
shortcuts to move between them.

Previously, the workspaces were in order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Now they seem to be in this order: 1, 4, 3, 2, 5

I assume something simple just got messed up in the 3.32 release since it
worked fine in 3.30
and in all previous releases.

Bug#924595: backup2l: Sometimes fails to detect running instance.

2019-03-14 Thread wayne
Package: backup2l
Version: 1.6-3
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream patch

Dear Maintainer,

backup2l can sometimes fail to detect a running instance, such that
two instances are running at the same time. This occurs when backup2l
is run manually, and then disowned such that backup2l no longer
belongs to the shell I used to start it. If I then run backup2l again
while the disowned backup2l is still running, the second run will
start running rather that complaining about the lock file and
existing. Or, if the daily cron job runs, it will start another
instance of backup2l.

To reproduce, do this as root, in bash:

backup2l -b
disown %1

Then while the disowned instance is still running:

backup2l -s

This will run, instead of complaining about the lockfile as expected.
It then removes the lock file.

I believe this occurs because backup2l is using `ps -a` to find the
running backup2l instances, but a disowned backup2l does not show up
in `ps -a`. Instead, `ps -ax` needs to be used. The attached patch,
which has this change, seems to fix the problem for me.

Background: I disowned the manual backup2l because I needed the
long-running manual backup to continue even if the SSH session were
interrupted.

Bug#919648: i2c - Elantech touchscreen - Surface GO - not recognized properly

2019-01-18 Thread wayne wayne
Package: linux-image-4.19.0-1-amd64
Severity: important

Device: Surface Go

Debian Version: Buster with latest updates

Summary:

In general it is working fine, but it seems that some stuff is missing because
device ID is not known and then its loaded in a generic mode and not device
specific. E.g. the assumed battery should be remove because it is a touchscreen
and also the power control needs adjustement.

Please let me know which outputs are needed to get the Elantech toucschreen
recognized properly.

First: The touchscreen is reporting a battery status in GNOME Settings ->
Energy and also in general in the system.

This can be seen here:

   * What led up to the situation?

I installed debian jessie, during which time the installer warned me that it
would be inadvisable not to use encrypted swap. Who am I to disagree? I later
upgraded to debian stretch/testing but as far as I can tell looking at the diff
between 1.6.6-5 and master at git://anonscm.debian.org/pkg-cryptsetup/cryptsetup
the bug is almost certain in jessie also. Does anyone else even use encrypted
swap?

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

I edited /lib/cryptsetup/cryptdisks.functions to have the "stop" command check
for the "swap" option in the /etc/crypttab line and ran a new function named
"do_unswap()" to call "swapoff -a; do_close; return 0" to ensure that the
encrypted disk would be properly shut down on restart.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

Encrypted swap on this machine is great again.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

This is what I expected since I verified manually before modifying the
cryptdisks.functions file that if I properly turn off swap and close the
encrypted partition before rebooting the swap partition would indeed be active
by the time i log in next.

I'll probably try submitting a patch or something.

Bug#808102: Fwd: Delivery Status Notification (Failure)

2015-12-16 Thread Wayne Rowcliffe
I tried attaching my status file but I got an email saying that the
attachment was rejected. I will look into that.

For the record, no I do not manually edit the file normally.
I am a software developer by trade so I was trying to debug the issue on my
own. It seems to be happening only on this laptop and none of the other
machines that I have the same sources.list on.

Bug#808102: apt: `apt-cache policy` does not find package listed in `/var/lib/dpkg/status`

2015-12-15 Thread Wayne Rowcliffe
Package: apt
Version: 1.1.5
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I was installing upgrades the other day and everything appeared to work
correctly. Then I went to manually install a package and `apt` said that
there were missing dependencies and I needed to run `apt-get install -f`
to fix them. I did this, but the problem persisted.

Digging into it more, I found that `evince` depends on
`libevdocument3-4`. Both of these are installed according to `dpkg -l`
and both are present in `/var/lib/dpkg/status`

However, `apt-cache policy libevdocument3-4` said the file was not
installed.

After trying multiple things, I found that if I moved `libevdocument3-4`
up next to `evince` in `/var/lib/dpkg/status`, then everything worked
correctly.

I just ran `apt-get upgrade` and now it is telling me:

apt-get install
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 gir1.2-gnomebluetooth-1.0 : Depends: libgnome-bluetooth13 (>= 3.12.0)
 but it is not installed
  gnome-bluetooth : Depends: libgnome-bluetooth13 (>= 3.12.0) but it is
  not installed
  gnome-control-center : Depends: libgnome-bluetooth13 (>= 3.12.0) but
  it is not installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try using -f.

So this seems to be a broader issue where if I fix one thing then
another breaks. `libgnome-bluetooth13` is installed and present in
`/var/lib/dpkg/status`.

Bug#807980: This bug can be closed

2015-12-15 Thread Wayne Rowcliffe
I was able to get things working correctly by moving libevdocument3-4 up in
the `/var/lib/dpkg/status` file so that it was next to `evince`. I have no
idea why that changed anything, but afterward it found the package fine.

[1.579186] iwlwifi :03:00.0: L1 Enabled - LTR Enabled

Sine I have updated to latest
https://packages.debian.org/jessie-backports/firmware-iwlwifi package from
backports the error hasn't occured anymore.

You could also try to update to this package from backports. You can also check
if this package has the latest drivers included for your wifi card. Here
https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/iwlwifi is a list which .ucode
is needed for which wifi card on each kernel.

Are you running 4.1 kernel from jessie backports
https://packages.debian.org/de/jessie-backports/linux-image-amd64? Because what
is written in the list on kernel.org, if v13 is expected, it is for kernel
version 4.1+. In jessie-backports latest wifi driver for you card is v10, as
seen in your log, which is loaded as the most recent one. This could be the
reason why you are getting this error.

So you could try to download
https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/_media/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi-7265-ucode-25.30.13.0.tgz
and copy the two .ucode files to "/lib/firmware" were also the other
iwlwifi--*.ucode files are located and then try reboot and check dmesg if
error still exists (because this will bring you latest intel driver for your
kernel). Or you go back to Jessie's normal kernel 3.16 and use the wifi driver
package from jessie-backports. So two options, going back to old kernel and
package from backports or manually "install" driver for your actual kernel.

This is just what I could figure out, I am not an expert, so no warranty! :)

Please let us know if this helped you.

Maybe I should add that if I was running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS that everything was
running smooth without any issues. So its not a hardware or router issue.

The upgrade to 215-5+b1 because I had manually created the systemd-journal

that group.
The script executed successfully when I commented out that line.

Bug#746200: apt: Apt-get install doesn't respect /target_release

2014-04-27 Thread Wayne Rowcliffe
Package: apt
Version: 1.0.2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

With the recent upgrade of apt to 1.0, /target_release flags do not seem
to have any effect.

For my particuluar situation, I am trying to upgrade gnome to use 3.12.
This involves pulling packages from both experimental and unstable. So I
attempt to do: `apt-get install gnome-shell/experimental
empathy/unstable`, etc. However, when I do this apt seems to completely
ignore the flags and instead tries to install the versions from testing.

I have used this method many times in the past to specify a set of
packages from different releases that won't conflict with each other.
Since the upgrade to apt 1.0, I am not able to.

Bug#729281: gnome-shell: Gtk POPUP style window's paint area not updated with window resize

2013-11-10 Thread Wayne Rowcliffe
Package: gnome-shell
Version: 3.10.1-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I have a gmail monitoring application I wrote that uses a Gtk Window
with type POPUP to show new messages.

From the window, you can mark messages as read, which causes that
message to disappear from the window. The window then shrinks itself to
fit the remaining messages.

This has worked fine for two years, however with gnome-shell 3.10 the
paint area isn't getting shrunk. The window borders are updated
properly (If the mouse leaves the window the popup disappears). However
the paint area stays its original size and the window contents are tiled
over the original area.

http://i.imgur.com/aGv6D7B.png Is a screenshot of what happens. Only the
top two messages should be showing. If I move the mouse around, the link
highlighting updates accordingly on all the repeated images (Which is
why I believe the window contents are being tiled rather than the area
just being stale)

https://github.com/war1025/gmailnotify/blob/master/gmailicon.vala#L504
That is a link to the section of code that does the resizing. I can
create a smaller test case if that would be helpful.

Thank you,

Bug#729150: gnome-shell: 3.10 shell network icon does not display wireless

2013-11-09 Thread Wayne Rowcliffe
Package: gnome-shell
Version: 3.10.1-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I'm running 3.10 from experimental. At first the network manager wasn't
working at all, I fixed this by upgrading policykit-1 to the version in
experimental that uses systemd. Everything seems to be working now
except the network icon stays as disconnected even when I am connected
on wireless. If I connect to a vpn, the vpn icon shows up fine. I am not
sure if it is a bug in gnome-shell or network-manager. Since things were
working until I upgraded to 3.10, I am inclined to believe that it is
something in gnome-shell.

Not a huge deal, just figured I should report it.

Bug#728751: libgtk-3-0: Listview scroll rendering fragments

2013-11-04 Thread Wayne Rowcliffe
Package: libgtk-3-0
Version: 3.10.2-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Since installing gtk 3.10 I have noticed an issue when scrolling through
lists and tables.

If the mouse is on top of the list and I scroll, the highlight styling
does not get cleaned up properly, leaving a series of partially
highlighted lines. I attempted to get a screenshot, but doing a print
screen caused the window to repaint properly.

I suspect that not enough area is getting marked as dirty when
re-rendering the list during scroll.

Bug#728242: Another version of foo.sh

2013-10-30 Thread wayne
Further testing has revealed that there is some randomness to this
anomaly. Adding more versions of the attachment more reliably
reproduces the problem on my box. Here's a new version of the test
script. This uses bar0.pdf, previously attached

Why 7 versions of the attachment instead of 8? Because at 8, the
problem disappears (but reappears again at 9).

Regards,
Wayne Conrad

Bug#728242: pdftk: reattaching file, then extracting, gives wrong version of file

2013-10-29 Thread wayne

Package: pdftk
Version: 2.01-1
Severity: normal

When replacing a file attachment with another of the same name, and
then extracting attachments, an earlier version of the attachment may
be produced.

To reproduce the problem, put foo.sh and bar0.pdf in a temporary
directory and run foo.sh:

$./foo.sh
attachment v. 1

It should have printed:

attachment v. 2

This anomaly appears to be sensitive to initial conditions. For
example, changing the length of the attachment's filename can yield
different results.

The size of the PDF file grows with each re-attachment of the
same-named file:

$ ls bar*.pdf
-rw--w 1 wayne wayne 836 Oct 29 09:49 bar0.pdf
-rw-rw-r-- 1 wayne wayne 1345 Oct 29 13:02 bar1.pdf
-rw-rw-r-- 1 wayne wayne 1670 Oct 29 13:02 bar2.pdf

It is expected that the PDF grew from bar0.pdf to bar1.pdf--that's
when the attachment was initially added. However, the growth from
bar1.pdf to bar2.pdf, when the attachment was re-added with new,
same-size contents, is unexpected.

It is acting as though:

* An attachment is not replacing an attachment of the same name, but
instead is being added as a new attachment with the same name, and
* When multiple attachments of the same name exist, one of them is
extracted; it may, or may not be, the most recent one added.

I do not claim, of course, that this is what is actually happening.
This is just one model that explains this behavior.

#!/bin/sh

echo 'attachment v. 1' foo
pdftk bar0.pdf attach_files foo output bar1.pdf

echo 'attachment v. 2' foo
pdftk bar1.pdf attach_files foo output bar2.pdf

rm foo
pdftk bar2.pdf unpack_files output .
cat foo# Should print attachment v. 2

Bug#726651: Umlet GUI Hangs with missing configuration message

2013-10-29 Thread Wayne Warren
Ben,

Yes, it hangs whenever attempting to start it. This happens with or without the
$HOME/.umlet directory.

In other words, if I remove $HOME/.umlet entirely, a new $HOME/.umlet
appears and the program still hangs upon startup.

When the autochanger/library contains more than about 24574 total elements
(slots+drives+mailslots),
mtx fails. This is probably due to running over its buffer. Could mtx be
enhanced to iteratively issue Read Element Status for some reasonable number of
elements, bumping up starting element number? Then there will be
no dependency on mtx' buffer size.

Even though system has tape drives, there are no device files in
/dev/tape/by-id for tape drives. (There are for autochangers/libraries.)
Could udev be enhanced so that tape drives also have entries in /dev/tape/by-id?
Other newer Linux operating systems like SuSE and RedHat do this.

I think the changes in question would be to 60-persistent-storage-tape.rules.

Bug#725371: partman-ext3: Can't change mount options for ext4

2013-10-04 Thread Wayne Warren

Package: partman-ext3
Version: 79
Severity: normal
Tags: d-i

Dear Maintainer,

I was installing Debian Jessie from the following ISO:

 Debian GNU/Linux testing Jessie - Official Snapshot amd64 xfce-CD
   Binary-1 20130930-05:46

(text grabbed from README.txt on the cdrom)

When attempting to choose the Mount Options: menu item for an ext4 partition
while manually partitioning my drive, I noticed that the checkbox menu that
allows the selection of mount options for other partition types (ext3, for
example) does not appear.

Instead, the screen blinks white real quick then returns to the menu for
modifying that particular partition with the same Mount Options: menu option
selected.

It's possible I have done something wrong up to this point, but as far as I can
tell the option checklist should appear just as it does for ext3 for example.

It is possible that this is more directly related to partman-base, but I chose
to report against partman-ext3 since it is specifically the ext4 menu option
that seems broken. Let me know if there is any other information I can get or
anything else I can do to help out.

Bug#716846: gnome-settings-daemon: g-s-d 3.8 hibernate does not work

2013-07-13 Thread Wayne Rowcliffe
Package: gnome-settings-daemon
Version: 3.8.3-1+b1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I am running gnome 3.8, including gnome-settings-daemon 3.8.
In 3.8, there is a hard dependency on systemd. This includes calls to
systemd's hibernate and suspend scripts for the power management.

Debian does not have a properly up to date version of systemd, also
there is some push-back as to whether debian should fully adopt systemd.

I think it would make sense to either make this action configurable or
revert to using the previous pm-utils / upower system.

Currently none of the system's hibernate / suspend functionalities work,
including shutting down the system when the battery is critically low or
when the power button is pressed / lid is closed.

I am getting the same error on an IBM NetVista (machine type-model 8303-52U)

unless I select recovery mode.

I installed linux-image-3.2.0-4-686-pae_3.2.29-1_i386.deb and still get the

Bug#662720: sozi: get failed to load canberra-gtk-module dialog when selecting the Sozi extension in inkscape

2012-03-05 Thread Wayne Warren
Package: sozi

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?
I tried to select the Sozi extension in inkscape.
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
I installed libcanberra-gtk-module.
   * What was the outcome of this action?
This prevented the problem from recurring
   * What outcome did you expect instead?
This is what I expected! Or maybe I expect the libcanberra-gtk-module to be a
recommends for sozi (and inkscape too, for that matter)...but I don't really
have a good comprehension of the Debian Packaging Policy so...yeah. If nothing
is done as a result of this (for instance if it is decided not to add
libcanberra-gtk-module as a recommends for sozi) could I have a short
explanation? If I don't get one, I will probably just read some documentation
until I understand.

Bug#654787: RFP: oxygen-transparent -- KDE Oxygen style and decoration with support for transparency

2012-01-05 Thread Kenneth Wayne Foy, Jr
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: oxygen-transparent
  Version : 1
Upstream Author : Hugo Pereira h...@oxygen-icons.org
* URL : http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=127752
* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: I guess C++.
Description : KDE Oxygen style and decoration with support for
transparency

This is an official branch of the KDE oxygen style. It is kept in sync with the
official oxygen style, and adds support of full transparency on the windows. In
the near future, oxygen-transparent will have monthly numbered releases, to
follow the same policy as KDE, and oxygen-gtk. The style (and decoration)
should work for KDE 4.5 and above. The installed code does not erase the
official Oxygen installation, and users can select Oxygen Transparent from the
relevant widget style and window decoration page of the KDE system settings
dialog.

Bug#652306: pulseaudio: cannot select different master channel

2011-12-15 Thread Kenneth Wayne Foy Jr
Package: pulseaudio
Version: 1.0-4
Severity: grave
Tags: d-i
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,
After I install Debian testing with a KDE environment, my volume is too loud.
When I try to turn it down, the screen tells me that the level is going down,
but the sound doesn't change until the level is almost to mute. Then, the sound
gets too quiet, so the sound is either too loud, too quiet or muted with a lot
of space in between where the volume doesn't change.

When I right-click the volume (KMix) to investigate and select another master
channel, there is only one channel listed: Internal Audio Analog Stereo.
Changing
the Current Mixer option doesn't give me more channels. When I run alsamixer in
a terminal, there's only one channel: Master. If I remove pulseaudio and log out
or restart kdm or the computer (can't remember which), KMix then has several
channels to choose from, and alsamixer has about a dozen channels as well. Then,
I can pick one—like PCM—which has the full range of volume.

My computer is several years old, and its sound jack on the back is actually a
headphone jack. The Master and Headphone channels also affect the volume after
removing pulseaudio.

Regards,
Kete

Bug#635375: Auth_MySQL_Password_Clause

2011-07-25 Thread wayne
Hi again,

I've just read that Auth_MySQL_Password_Clause can be used for that (but which I
haven't check yet):

Auth_MySQL_Password_Clause SQL fragment
Adds arbitrary clause to username:password matching query, for example:
AND Allowed=1. Clause has to start with space. Default is empty.

So, seems like it's just a documentation issue :)

Bye,
Werner

Bug#625267: binutils: Relocation problem when building a shared library on an Alpha

2011-05-02 Thread Wayne Rossberg
Package: binutils
Version: 2.18.1~cvs20080103-7
Severity: normal

While attempting to run Firefox 4.0 on a DEC Alpha, after finally
succeeding in building it from sources, the program fails with a SIGILL.
Upon further investigation it appears the problem is due to an incorrect
relocation during the construction of the shared library libxul.so.

The following is an exerpt from an objdump of the object file resulting
from the compilation of the C++ file
mozilla-2.0/xpcom/base/nsCycleCollector.cpp showing the generated code

2011-04-23 Thread Wayne Davison
Package: ssmtp
Version: 2.64-4

I have a patch that fixes several issues with the parsing of the From
line where a string scan could go off the end or the beginning of the
string.  For instance, if it finds a '(' (on a From line w/o a
''...'' bounded addr), it will scan past the end if no ')' is found.
If a trailing is ')' is found, it will scan past the beginning if no
'(' is found.  And the trailing-space stripping function has a bug
that makes it unsafe if called on an empty (or white-space only)
string (e.g. the parsing of a From line that has only trailing spaces
could trigger that bug).

In each failure case the code can potentially write a zero byte
somewhere outside of the string's memory, possibly corrupting malloc
pointers or other nearby data. In the addr_parse() case there is also
the potential to return a random section of memory as the parsed
address.

My patch for these issues is here:  http://opencoder.net/ssmtp-overscan.patch

Bug#614734: libc6.1-dev: #include math.h from gcc on a DEC Alpha does not declare function `round'

2011-02-22 Thread Wayne Rossberg
Package: libc6.1-dev
Version: 2.7-18lenny7
Severity: normal

When compiling the file test.c containing:

#include math.h

double test(double x)
{
   return round(x);
}

using gcc 4.2.4-6 on a DEC Alpha machine produces the following result:

test.c In function `test':
test.c:5: warning: incompatible implicit declaration of built-in
function `round'

Upon examining the output from the command (i.e., the file temp.tmp):

gcc -E -o temp.tmp test.c

There is no declaration of the `round' function yet, as far as I can
determine, such a declaration should be present because it is in
/usr/include/math.h via the include of /usr/include/bits/mathcalls.h.

If I put an explicit declaration for `round' in test.c, no warning is
reported.

Bug#612929: ITP: infinitypfm -- a personal finance manager.

2011-02-11 Thread Wayne Gray
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Wayne Gray wg...@infinitypfm.org

* Package name: infinitypfm
  Version : 0.5.0
Upstream Author : Wayne Gray wg...@infinitypfm.org
* URL : http://www.infinitypfm.org/
* License : GPLv3
  Programming Lang: Java
Description : Infinity PFM is a personal finance manager.

Infinity PFM is a personal finance manager that includes budgeting,
multiple currencies, color reports, and charts. Supported import
formats are OFX, QFX, QIF, and direct import from the Bitcoin client.

The project currenty has a Launchpad PPA available at
ppa:mogray5/ppa-infinitypfm.

The deb installer for the application at
http://launchpad.net/infinitypfm/0.5/0.5.0rc1/+download/infinitypfm-ui_0.5.0-1ppa1_all.deb

works on Debian Squeeze.

Two external dependencies exit from these projects:

http://www.json.org/java/

The program fails with Segmentation fault when run with the following
command:

some of the page header graphics.

The program behaves the same whether in safe mode or not.

Here is the backtrace for the command:

Bug#557023: Barby::Code128: private method split called for nil

2009-11-18 Thread Wayne Conrad
Package: libbarby-ruby1.8
Version: 0.3-1
Severity: normal

Creating a new instance of Barby::Code128 with a legitimate string can
cause a stack trace. One such string is the empty string:

  Barby::Code128.new(, 'B')

The stack trace is:

/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/barby/barcode/code_128.rb:239:in `characters': private method
`split' called for nil:NilClass (NoMethodError)

from ./foo.rb:15:in `new'
from ./foo.rb:15

foo.rb (attached) reproduces the problem two different ways.

Bug#546292: wordpress: cannot upload pictures

2009-09-27 Thread Wayne Conrad
I installed wordpress yesterday, and managed to duplicate this anomaly
in testing (squeeze), wordpress 2.8.4-2. The install left my
/srv/www/wp-uploads permissions set according to Giuseppe's
instructions.

Here's a workaround that worked for me. I'm too new to wordpress to
know if the workaround has harmful side-effects, but it did let me
upload pictures.

There is a configuration page, misc, not shown in the list of
configuration pages. Bring it up by modifing the URL from one of the
other configuration pages. For example:

http://yourblogdomain.tld/blog/wp-admin/options-misc.php

Change store uploads in this folder from

/sev/www/wp-uploads/yourblogdomain.tld

to

wp-content/uploads

Change Full URL path to files from

http://yourblogdomain.tld/wp-uploads

to nothing (make it blank).

Best Regards,
Wayne Conrad

Configuring phpwiki
---

phpwiki must have a database installed and configured before it can be used.
If you like, this can be handled with dbconfig-common.

If you are an advanced database administrator and know that you want to perform
this configuration manually, or if your database has already been installed
and configured, you should refuse this option. Details on what needs to be
done should most likely be provided in /usr/share/doc/phpwiki.

Otherwise, you should probably choose this option.

Configure database for phpwiki with dbconfig-common? yes

phpwiki can be configured to use one of many database types. Below, you will be
presented with the available choices.

ident based authentication, the supplied password will not be used and can be
left blank. Otherwise, PostgreSQL access may need to be reconfigured to
allow password-authenticated access.

Bug#369305: zsh: failed to write history file /home/sven/.zsh-history: no such file or directory

2008-03-06 Thread Wayne Davison
On Thu, Mar 06, 2008 at 10:19:37AM +, Peter Stephenson wrote:
If we decide a warning message is still appropriate, given that we've
detected exactly what's going on it should probably be more specific
than just a vague failed to write history.

Yes, we should definitely be giving the user better information.

I've fixed several things:

1. Tell the user when we're refusing to write out the history file so
that the ownership won't change. Try to differentiate if we're just
skipping the rewrite or if no new history data was written.

2. Allow root to write out the file even if it doesn't own it, as long
as zsh knows how to chown a file handle.

3. Avoid the generic failure message that confuses the issue (by setting
err = 0).

4. (bonus) Output the right error if we can't open the file for writing,
not an error about the file-handle being invalid. (This was due to the
use of fdopen(open(...), ...), which loses the errno from open().)

On Wed, Mar 05, 2008 at 03:29:36PM -0500, Clint Adams wrote:
As Sven notes, any history added before exiting will make it into the

The history being added is the appending going on due to SHARE_HISTORY.
The error is referring to the inability to rewrite the history file on
exit, and it is actually failing (because the write-new, then rename
steps would cause the file to change ownership). If incremental history
updating was not happening, the failed rewrite would indeed not save
anything new. The no such file or directory error string is
presumably a left-over errno that Peter noticed.

Aside: I like to make sure to never mix user history and root history,
so I define a different HISTFILE for root (e.g. .zhist_$USER).

Bug#445011: xfsprogs: fsck.xfs doesn't verify that the device exists

Hi Wayne,

Hmm, OK - seems safe enough I guess. It'd be nice to understand
the root cause here a bit - is the problem that we dont attempt to
access /dev/foo at all, so udev doesn't see any requests for that
device and doesnt create the device node? Then later when we try
to mount, the mount userspace code gets ENODEV? If so, I wonder
why the mount doesn't populate the device nodes on its access?

My knowledge of udev is pretty limited, so I'm not sure if that would
come into play at all.

The situation I ran into is when the device that is supposed to contain
the xfs filesystem is missing. fsck.xfs doesn't tell checkfs.sh that
there's a problem, and mountall.sh gladly assumes that checkfs.sh did
all of the legwork.

This bug might be more appropriately applied to the initscripts package,
but I decided to file it here since:

1.) this was an easier fix
2.) in the same scenario, fsck.(ext(2|3)|minix|cramfs|jfs) return errors
3.) this was a much easier fix. :)

In my case, the missing devices are being caused by intermittent XENBUS
timeouts. The the VM boots but doesn't realize that /var/log isn't
mounted. There's an underlying issue that needs to be resolved there,
but the same problem could happen on normal machines in the event that a
physical device is dead.

Also, the NFS fsck program is also a shell script, I wonder if it
might suffer similar issues and need a similar patch? Possibly not
since theres no local device involved there.

It looks like fsck.nfs may just be a kludge for people that specify a
pass other than 0 on nfs mounts. mountnfs.sh is smarter than
mountlocal.sh and doesn't seem to be dependent on fsck for anything.

I'll send the patch upstream and solicit their thoughts as well.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

- Wayne

A patch is available at http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/5/1/222 to make the
 megaraid_mm driver register the device.

I've tested the patch with a custom build from linux-source-2.6.17 version

Please try reproducing against the 2.6.18 kernel in sid; etch will

Just confirmed that the file is still missing when booting:

work, search for megadev in /proc/devices and replace 254 with the

I went ahead and did an strace of du -shc .* and it's obvious that it's
processing .mozilla-thunderbird, it just seems those results are lost
internally. It's probably nothing special about that directory as you
can run du -shc .m* and it works fine.

Bug#370799: rsync: [manual] option names should be listed alphabetically

2006-06-06 Thread Wayne Davison
Alphabetical order only helps someone to scan by eye for a known name,
not to find a useful option by what function it performs. The current
idea is to group options together that perform similar functions, which
(hopefully) helps people to find options by their concept (however, the
list could certainly be improved to make this clustering better).

If someone already knows the name of an option, instead of scanning a
sorted list by eye, I'd suggest searching for it using a pager.

Thus, I don't see the benefit of having the options in alphabetical
order.

Bug#286275: dpkg: [INSTALL-INFO] fixing the --dir-file option

2006-04-11 Thread Wayne Davison
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.13.17
Followup-For: Bug #286275

The initial problem reported in this bug (that install-info does not
understand the --dir-file option), no longer appears to be true.
Unfortunately, the implementation of the --dir-file option is not
correct: the script makes it an alias for the --info-dir option when
the former expects a filename and the latter expects a directory with an
assumed dir filename appended. The failure condition is that anyone
using the --dir-file option properly gets an error referring to a
filename with an extra /dir (e.g. /usr/local/info/dir/dir).

My fix is to change the $infodir variable to hold the name of the file,
not the directory with a bunch of appended /dir strings in the code.

The attached patch makes the following changes:

1. All instances of $infodir/dir were changed to $infodir .
2. Any resulting instances of $infodir (including the quotes) was
changed to remove the unneeded double-quotes.
3. The initialization of $infodir gets a trailing /dir added.
4. The matching of --infodir and --info-dir was unified to use a
single regex and to append /dir to the end of the specified dir.
5. Changed a call of -s $infodir to -s _ because we can reuse
the same stat info as a prior -e check.
6. Fixed the indentation of 4 lines.

Bug#289396: pop-before-smtp: please provide configurable grace period

2006-02-17 Thread Wayne Davison
Simply edit the /etc/pop-before-smtp/pop-before-smtp.conf and look for
the commented $grace assignment:

# A 30-minute grace period before the IP address is expired.
#$grace = 30*60;

Change the second line to be uncommented and have whatever value (in
seconds) that you desire. For instance, this chooses 90 minutes:

# A 90-minute grace period before the IP address is expired.
$grace = 90*60;

Bug#353359: pop-before-smtp is in need of an update: 1.39 is the latest

2006-02-17 Thread Wayne Davison
Package: pop-before-smtp
Version: 1.36-2
Severity: wishlist

I'd like to see the pop-before-smtp package updated to version 1.39 in
testing. Debian's current version is 1.36, which was released about 1.4
years ago.

Starting with the 1.37 release, pop-before-smtp has support for cached
IMAP connections (as used by Thunderbird), so it would be nice to see
this support make it into Debian testing.

The upgrade would also fix bugs #275707 and #320461 for Etch. I think
bug #292245 is already fixed by 1.36 in Sarge. Bug #289396 could also
be closed because pop-before-smtp already has support for a configurable
grace period. FYI.

Thanks in advance!

Fails to build kernel modules with 2.6.15 headers both with module

been released and is only available from CVS. Here is a discussion
about the problem in the Linux GPIB project mailing list archives:

Bug#344113: rsync: tries to chdir() into a device (strace attached)

2006-02-10 Thread Wayne Davison
A small hint: this problem is not deterministic.

The reason you might have thought that is that your test script has a
bug in it -- it's missing a trailing slash on the source directory.

FYI, this bug has been fixed for the 2.6.7 version (which is now in
a pre-release testing phase).

Bug#158170: rsync: hangs or exits with strange errors when pulling files

2006-02-10 Thread Wayne Davison
Russ: your strace output didn't list the 3rd rsync process (there are
two processes on the receiving side and one on the sending side). Also,
the issues and debugging page of the rsync website has some hints to
help debug problem scenarios, such as including what netstat says
about active socket connections and their send/receive buffers. You
might also try using --blocking-io or --no-blocking-io to see if that
makes any difference (using --blocking-io fixed one situation recently).

Richard wrote:
 /usr/bin/rsync --no-detach --daemon --config /etc/rsyncd.conf
[...]
 rsync -a fs1::remote-name/ /localfilesystem/path/
[...]
rsync error: timeout in data send/receive (code 30) at io.c(181)

The only way a timeout can occur without a client-specified --timeout
option is if the daemon's config file specifies a timeout, and that can
be problematical if it is too short to allow for any dead-time that can
occur during the transfer of a large file (what is it's setting?). The
current protocol does not allow the daemon to tell the client about a
timeout setting, so the client can't help to prevent a timeout unless
there is also a command-line --timeout option specified (which should be
less-than or equal-to the daemon's timeout setting). If timeouts still
occur with a long timeout value, treat the situation as a hang and get
some strace output of the 3 processes and the netstat output when the
connection stalls so that we can try to figure out what might be wrong.

Bug#166183: rsync: doesnt work if there are spaces in filenames

2006-02-10 Thread Wayne Davison
This is not really a bug, but the documented way rsync currently works.
It uses unescaped spaces to allow the user to ask for multiple arguments
from the remote host, and thus requires that filenames with spaces be
escaped in some shell-compatible manner.

Another way to avoid the problem is to use the --files-from option, even
if you're just asking for one file. This works fine because filenames
read via --files-from are used literally, with no special handling
needed for space-containing names.
