The segfault issue appears to be related to memory usage. Trying to set a 1920x1200 PNG file as background consistently segfaults whereas a 1600x1200 version of the same image sets the background correctly.
The same issue is evident in wmakerconf when the same image files are used. The problem seems to be related to the decompression since filesize doesn't seem to matter.
