Sorry to say, I don't think there's any way to fix this. I can't write to the current directory and I can't pass a filename with shell meta-characters to the command. What's so hard on properly escaping this? It's impossible because there is no way to know how it will be injected into the command line. Imagine these two mailcap command entries: myprog %s myprog '%s' There is no way to escape the meta-characters such that it will be correct in both cases when substituted for %s.
