I really wanted to use the 2.6 kernel beceause of the SATA disks, but it
just wouldn't work.

I'll just keep trying :-)

Try booting the installer in expert mode. You will be asked what modules
you want to install during cdrom detection.

Try selecting only general ide modules (like ide-cd).
Try to find out what combination of modules works and what does not.

Let us know the results.

Cheers,
FJP

After selecting the right modules (all), this is wat it tells me:

You must have misunderstood me. _Don't_ select all modules, just select
the general ide modules (ide-generic, ide-cd) instead and check if your
CD drive works then.
The idea is that there may be a module conflict and we need to find out
what it is.

Unable to load some modules blah
The unavailable modules, and the devices that need them are: e1000
(Intel Corporation 82547GI Gigabit Ethernet Controller), e100 (Intel
Corporation 82557/8/9 [Ethernet Pro 100]), ide-mod (Linux IDE driver),
ide-probe-mod (Linux IDE probe driver), ide-detect (Linux IDE
 detection), ide-floppy (Linux IDE floppy).

This is not relevant.

The same CD with the same 2.6 kernel worked and loaded all necessary
modules on my other computer, a regular hp Vectra DL420, so the CD is
fine. I guess that it's just a matter of missing modules on the CD to
 detect the hardware correct.

However, I just finally succedded in installing it using Knoppix (and
 with a lot of workarounds...).

In that case, please send us the output of 'lspci' and 'lspci -n' so we
can see what kind of hardware is in the machine.
The output of 'lsmod' should be usefull as well.

Cheers,
FJP

I did that as well, it didn't work.

I already sent the output of lspci, but here it comes again:

Lsmod isn't going to tell you a lot, I compiled the drivers right into
the kernel.

I'll send a gzipped .config to the BTS, maybe it helps.

Cheers,
Peet
