I had the same problem, but with konsole, using the colour schema black on 
light yellow with linux character.
But the problem solved after one of last upgrade, now the background is always 
black.

thanks for the fast reply.
No, this is gnome-terminal, colour scheme black on white. I just tried
xterm and konsole, but these don't show the problem. So this could be a
problem of gnome-terminal.
