I would like to see support for such a list. It could be a nice place
for packagers and developers of scientific software to discuss, to aid
one another and to introduce new packages. Because of the (often) close
relationship between scientific applications/libraries, a central place
like the suggested mailing list is IMO a good idea. Debian could be a
good (client) platform for a wide range of scientific applications.

Regards, Daniel

Bug#320275: request for debian-science mailing list

Hi,

I want to request the creation of a mailing list for people using Debian to do
Science to communicate with each other. This is a result of the talk I gave at
Debconf5 about Using Debian for Science Research. I've since received emails
from several people, expressing interest in the general idea, and I think that
it would be a good start to allow people who are interested in the use of Debian
as an OS for scientific research to communicate easily via a mailing list.

Name: debian-science

Rationale: Research scientists and students have a fairly specific set of needs
from their operating system. The aim of this list is to allow people who are
interested in using Debian for science and science research to communicate about
packages that are particularly useful, discuss problems that commonly occur in
scientific applications, and talk about general issues that arise when using
Debian for science. One possible aim of the list would be to discuss the
creation of a Custom Debian Distribution for use in science research.

Short Description: using debian for science and related research

Long Description: Debian Science: For discussion of issues relating to the use
of Debian for science research, including useful packages, particular problems
faced by scientists using Debian, how to make Debian more useful to scientists,
etc.
