were you running xcdroast under a user who didn't start the X session,
i.e. root?

I ran xcdroast under user who had run X session.
If I run xterm and I login as normal user then window pop up with info.
that it should be open by superuser to configure.
After that if I login as the root then application show message about
 Gtk-WARNNING **: cannot open display.

In that case it isn't an xcdroast problem, I suggest you use sudo
instead of su, your system is working as expected.
