So, I'm retitling this, as it's vesa-specific.

Yes, 6.8.2.dfsg.1-5 carries a backport of i810 from X.Org HEAD (latest code), so all your problems should go away. Sure, I can try i810 as well (I'll do so tonight), but vesa should still not be trashing my console. :) The reason I'm using vesa is because i810 broke horribly w/ earlier xserver-xorgs, but I've been told that there are a bunch of backports/fixes regarding that.

Bug#322667: xserver-xorg: X trashes virtual consoles
Package: xserver-xorg Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-5 Severity: normal Before I start X, the virtual consoles on my system (tty0 through tty6) work fine. After starting X, X itself works, but the consoles are no longer usable. Basically, the video output on the consoles is squished to about 1/8 of the screen, and is scrolling by really fast (if I squint, I can just make out the getty login stuff). This is something new with xorg; with xserver-xfree86, vesa worked on this system just fine. -- Package-specific info: Contents of /var/lib/xfree86/X.roster: xserver-xfree86 xserver-xorg /etc/X11/X target unchanged from checksum in /var/lib/xfree86/X.md5sum.
