Note that I recently installed and later removed a bunch of web browsers. Now readlink -f $(which www-browser) => /usr/bin/lynx.stable. I ran a dist-upgrade from an xterm, and the changelogs appeared in a new xterm with lynx running (as in xterm -e lynx /tmp/foo), and the apt-get process waited until the xterm exited, as it should have.
