Thats a packaging inconsistency. Thanks for reporting it. We fixed it in
pkg-java CVS. This fix will be included in the next upload of eclipse,
3.1.2-1.

Cheers,

Bug#348584: eclipse-jdt: Won't start without 'eclipse' package

2006-01-17 Thread Adrian Irving-Beer
Package: eclipse-jdt
Version: 3.1.1-8
Severity: normal

With only the 'eclipse-jdt' package installed, I cannot run 'eclipse';
I get the attached logfile. It appears to be an issue with the
initial configurator.

Since 'eclipse-jdt' is described as "JDT provides a whole Java IDE," I
incorrectly assumed this was the package I wanted rather than the
entire Eclipse framework. The fact that /usr/bin/eclipse existed made
me think I had a complete (but broken) installation.

Given that I now find that /usr/bin/eclipse is provided by
'eclipse-platform-common', I find it somewhat odd that it appears
unusable unless the top-level 'eclipse' package is installed.
(For that matter, I though 'eclipse' was just a metapackage, too.)

Is this a real error, or just an error in my assumptions?
