Eh, at least for Sarge this isn't even true?
  mysql-server-4.0 (4.0.24-10sarge1) has "7"
  mysql-server-4.1 (4.1.11a-4sarge2) has "2"

So although the value of 2 was choosen bad, it's not disabled.
For testing/unstable the next version will have expire_logs_days
in use.

bye,

Hmmm... OK, I see...

My fault if I'm using testing, then ;)

Hmmm... Any way to warn users of testing maybe ? DWN ?

It would be so bad if lots of people would get /var full because of this
one...

The value was probably indeed not choosen very well but I can't change
it for the already released Debian Sarge release any more.

In the next Debian release, which will only ship MySQL 5.0, the binary
logging will be configurable via expire-logs-days in /etc/mysql/my.cnf
which will be set to a value of 20. The cronscript will then be superflous.

Bug#349661: mysql-server-4.1: /var/log/mysql increases without limits

2006-01-24 Thread Olivier Berger
Package: mysql-server-4.1
Version: 4.1.15-1
Severity: important

I've noticed a behaviour where /var/log/mysql endlessly increases. This
has serious consequences on /var becoming full, which is a bad
situation.

Binary logs seem to be created in default config (why ?... only
necessary for special needs ?), rotated and never purged.

The value KEEP_BINARY_LOGS is at 0 by default in
/etc/mysql/debian-log-rotate.conf

The comments in this file state : "A value of 0 disables rotating
and is set as default for backward compatibility."

I'd suggest that by default, if binary logs have to be used (which is
not obvious to me), they should be purged at some time not to fill up
the /var.

At least this should be explained to the user in README.Debian or
something (or configured at installation time).

Best regards.
