Now that upstream have dropped the GTK+ 1.2 version of
libgutenprintui, it means that changes such as this can be easily made
to libgutenprintui2. Hopefully, this may be looked at soonish.

Dear Helge,

Due to this not being a bug, but a minor performance issue, I'm
downgrading the severity to wishlist. I'm tagging it upstream,
because I will file a bug upstream so that it gets looked at for the
next development series.

The reason that it's doing this is the creation of two
GtkFileSelection dialogues on startup, which are presumably doing a
directory scan behind the scenes. These are used for print-to-file
and PPD selection. See file_browser and ppd_browser in
src/gutenprintui2/panel.c.

This was probably done for performance reasons (they are reused rather
than recreated), and also due to the poor structure of the code. This
won't be fixable for version 5.0, because the UI code is an
inpenetrable mess (due to needing to keep compatibility with
GTK+-1.2), which I expect to rework significantly in the next
development series as soon as we ditch GTK+-1.2 compatibility.

Regards,
Roger

Bug#350044: When printing, gimp looks up filenames it has no business looking at

2006-01-26 Thread Helge Hafting
Package: gimp
Version: 2.2.10-1
Severity: normal

I start gimp from the command line. Therefore I noticed that
selecting the file->print menu gave me a lot of error
messages on the console. They were all like this:

Gtk-Message: The filename "str\370m" couldn't be converted to UTF-8. (try
setting the environment variable G_FILENAME_ENCODING): Invalid byte sequence
in conversion input

It is true that I have quite a few files whose names does not conform
to UTF-8. Many of them aren't even pictures.

So gimp has no business whatsoever trying to create UTF-8 strings
for these filenames! Gimp is clearly wasting its (an my) time
as well as memory, for there were no need to look up even a
single filename. I was bringing up the print dialog for an
existing open picture, I was *not* using the "open file" dialog
or some such.

Removing this nonsense should give a faster gimp, fewer error
messages, and possibly a somewhat smaller codebase.
