Can you test with one of the daily builds you'll find on
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer, preferably the netboot
(NOT netinst) or the businesscard image ?

I meant to say: "could not be inserted". First a dialog box opened telling me
(I'm trying to put the German text in English): "No network card found, but a
firewire-device. Do you want to use firewire-ethernet? - Yes / No". On both
answers a second dialog box opened showing a list of available net drivers,
among others the sk98lin. Choosing it by hitting had no effect using
the Testing net install versions. The Sarge version returned that the module
could not be inserted.

With "modprobe -v sk98lin" I did not get a feed-back. lsmod showed the name of
"sk98lin", but in /proc/net/sk98lin/ there was nothing; not the expected
"eth0". Switching back to the first console: Same as before.

greetings,
Georg

What do you exactly mean by "could not be inserted". Don't you mean
"was not inserted automatically"?

What happens if you switch to VT2 when the "No network card detected"
screen appears and run "modprobe sk98lin" from
there...then switch back to VT1 and retry the network detection step?

Comments/Problems:

The LAN Driver Module sk98lin needed for the Marvell Technology Group Ltd.
88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 19) in chipset Intel 915G
could not be inserted.
This chipset is wide-spread with Intel P4 machines and there are working
versions of sk98lin delivered with modified debian kernels. See, e.
g., //kanotix.com or //debian.tu-bs.de/project/kanotix/kernel/ . I believe
that it would increase the acceptance of Debian linux very much if they could
provide for working lan drivers for 915G.
