This bug (update-grub uses savedefault when grub itself does not support it) is preventing my system from automatically starting when I reboot. This is merely annoying for me, but someone who is new to Debian might not know how to fix this, and this behavior is definitely unsuitable for a release. It is also unsuitable for machines which might need to be restarted via SSH (to upgrade to a new version of udev or a new kernel) but do not have remote serial console access[0].
[0] The scenario where the new kernel/udev itself is broken is ameliorated by the "fallback" option.
