tetex-extra would be a nice to have here, since you would get PostScript
Type1 fonts instead of bitmapped Type3 fonts, but that is not the
 problem here.

 What is the output of

 kpsewhich cmr10.tfm

It doesn't print anything, and exits with status 1.

? What output do you get, when you process the following file with 'latex'?

I don't know. I asked the administrator of the machine and they
didn't seem to think it was hardware-specific.

I assume that it is an update problem from tetex2, wild guess.

Furthermore which tetex packages are installed in which versions?

The system I was testing on seems to be offline. Falk, would it be
possible for me to have access to it again so that I investigate
further?

reassign 350903 tetex-base
thanks

Hi Matt, hi teTeX Debian Masters!

I don't know exactely how this can happen, but I guess I will add a bug
report script echoing various settings.

It seems that this happens with tetex3 (as pdfetex in texlive packages
are 1.30.5 version (and not 1.21a).

As it only happens on alpha, could it be a new instance of the failed
hardware problem?

I assume that it is an update problem from tetex2, wild guess.
