Aborting. hplip just calls adduser. adduser calls chage. So, this bug belongs to the adduser package :-) as manpage for chage states: The chage program requires shadow password file to be available. Its functionality is not available when passwords are stored in the passwd file. AFAIK Debian is dropping support for shadow-less systems, so I am reducing the bug severity to minor before reassigning it.
