Probably using a too old adduser or something? Anyway, reassigning it to
adduser as they probably know what's going on here :)

The original report said that the version of adduser installed was
supposedly the fixed version. However, I see that the fixed version
also had a couple of places where the same sort of thing could happen,
so I submitted a patch for that.

Take care,

This is an adduser bug, it looks like. See #351480 and #351552. They
are marked as done, but it looks like not.

Bug#351609: hal fails to install: group 108 already exists

2006-02-05 Thread Thomer M. Gil
Package: hal
Version: 0.5.6-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

When installing hal, I get:

(Reading database ... 72238 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking hal (from .../archives/hal_0.5.6-2_i386.deb) ...
Setting up hal (0.5.6-2) ...
groupadd: GID 108 is not unique
adduser: `/usr/sbin/groupadd -g 108 hal' returned error code 4. Aborting.
dpkg: error processing hal (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 4
Errors were encountered while processing:
 hal
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
A package failed to install. Trying to recover:
Setting up hal (0.5.6-2) ...
groupadd: GID 108 is not unique
adduser: `/usr/sbin/groupadd -g 108 hal' returned error code 4. Aborting.
dpkg: error processing hal (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 4
Errors were encountered while processing:
 hal

Surprise. Group 108 already exists (it's gdm, on my system).
