Like it says at the end of the debotstrap man page: Note that you will generally need a recent version of debootstrap to do this; the version currently in stable will generally have stopped work‐ ing due to changes to unstable shortly after the last release. AFAICS the other reported problems, with --second-stage have nothing to do with base-config. I don't know why you're trying to use --second-stage, but the man page documents how to use it: --foreign Do the initial unpack phase of bootstrapping only, for example if the target architecture does not match the host architecture. A copy of debootstrap sufficient for completing the bootstrap process will be installed as /deboostrap/debootstrap in the tar‐ get filesystem. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Hi all, may I mention that with base-config now missing, I'm not able to build chroots anymore? On Sid (trying to build a Sid chroot) I get: electra2-sid:/# debootstrap --second-stage bash: debootstrap: command not found (from within the chroot) and electra2-sid:/home/wjl# debootstrap --second-stage cat: /usr/lib/debootstrap/suite: No such file or directory from without. On Sarge (trying to build a Sid chroot) I get: E: Couldn't download base-config (while debootstrapping) And finally, in the debootstrap (8) manpage, the final init-command also fails.
