Bug#358617: linux-image-2.6.16-1-686: please enable CONFIG_IPW2200_MONITOR=y

2006-04-23 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I'm with Noèl on this one. Monitor mode should be enabled ASAP.
I'm even getting firmware errors even not being able to enable monitor mode
so I see no point on having it enabled.

Bug#358617: linux-image-2.6.16-1-686: please enable CONFIG_IPW2200_MONITOR=y

2006-03-23 Thread Noèl Köthe
Package: linux-image-2.6.16-1-686
Version: 2.6.16-2
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

the ipw2200 module in the kernel doesn't have the monitor mode enabled.
It should be enabled like the one for ipw2100 but trying to enable it via
menuconfig on a vanilla .16 kernel doesn't allow this option.
But it is in the code

linux-2.6.16/drivers/net/wireless/ipw2200.c

#ifdef CONFIG_IPW2200_MONITOR
case IW_MODE_MONITOR:
rc = ipw_get_fw(priv, ucode,
IPW_FW_NAME(sniffer_ucode));

Is it a upstream bug?

Thank you.

The monitor mode doesn't need newer firmware. Its available since 2.2
firmware: ipw-2.4-sniffer.fw

May 17 2005  Changes in 1.0.4
...
-Updated the firmware requirement from 2.2 to 2.3 which supports monitor
mode.
...

So the ipw220 v 1.0.8 in the kernel is enough.

Its just the addition CONFIG_IPW2200_MONITOR=y to the config and:

Isn't it possible to get this into a 2.6.16 upload?

  Is it a upstream bug?

 will be enabled in 2.6.17.

Ah, I looked into patch-2.6.16-git6 and the Kconfig addition is there.

thx.

yes but buggy in 2.4

indeed and with a better firmware loading implementation.

:) Does googling for an error tells its completly broken?
Search for kernel panic.;)
I agree rfmon in the 3.0 firmware is much better but it works with the
2.4 firmware, too.

  So the ipw220 v 1.0.8 in the kernel is enough.

 no do a better research.

It worked for me with 2.6.15 and kismet in sid.
Its included in kismet since some time
http://kismetwireless.net/CHANGELOG 2005-06-R1
http://www.kismetwireless.net/blog/ IPW2200 updates

My conclusion is you are right in 2.6.17 it will be better but I see no
reason what would be the problem to enable it in 2.6.16. Its in the
kernel/driver and just needs to be enabled. No code change and nothing
experimental.:)
