I had this exact problem (gnome-session exits; no problem with
other user accounts nor with startx).

chmod a+x $HOME made it work.

I don't have one.

It seems to have fixed itself. It may have been related to my home
directory being chmoded 700, or it may be related to some dot files I
trashed. I'll try to investigate to see if I can narrow down the
cause.
