I've been running fvwm and KDE for more than two weeks now, and have
not yet experienced a hang. So it appears that Openbox is triggering
a bug in Xorg. I'll try to run it with debugging activated to see if
 I figure out something more.

I think I've found out what causes it. The clock on my workstation is
too fast, it needs only around two minutes and fifteen seconds to drift
ahead one second. This makes ntpd step the time backwards, which
appears to be what causes the hangs. Only happens sometimes, though,
but I observerd a clear correlation between the hangs and clock
stepping when I tested manually with ntpdate.

Even though X11R6 had no problems with this, I'm closing this bug as
it's unlikely to affect many users (it appears they'd need both to be
running Openbox and ntpd, as well as to have defective hardware).

So the only suggestion I have left is that Openbox is somehow
triggering a bug in X11R7, or vice verca. In the latter case,
however, it is weird that the state remains even after Openbox is
killed and another window manager is started in its place. Openbox
hasn't changed in a while, either... In any case, I'm running fvwm
now, to see if the hang also occur in an X session where Openbox has
never been present. I haven't seen a hang yet, but I have done it for
too short to conclude yet. I'll keep you posted.

Both of you, please also make sure (e.g. using xlsclients) that there
are no 'hidden' clients that could interfere, and that killing the
clients actually causes them to close their X display connection (and
 possibly open a new one).

I checked this, there is no client left, except the one started by
xinit. Usually this is my window manager Openbox, but I did try once
to make xinit start an xterm instead, and then start Openbox
afterwards. That enabled me to kill Openbox without also pulling down
the X server - without that having any effect. I started another
window manager afterwards (Window Maker, if I recall correctly), but
 yhe defunct state persisted.

 yet. I'll keep you posted.
