building roundup according to the rules for python-central, I get:

dpkg-genchanges: warning: unknown information field `Xb-Python-Version'
in input data in package's section of control info file

 (see http://python-modules.alioth.debian.org/python-central_howto.txt).

We got this bug report against dpkg-dev, but I don't think it's
appropriate to deal with this in dpkg while there does not seems to be
any consensus from the python packagers and python-policy PoV on what's
the proper thing to do.

Please reassign back when python packagers reach some consensus, or
just close otherwise. ;)

regards,
guillem

It's just a warning. Check the generated package; if you run
'dpkg --info whatever.deb' you should see a Python-Version header.

yes, it's a warning, and I assume(d) that you want to make the warning
go away. IMHO, developer tools should not emit warnings for conditions
which are mandated by the policy. Therefore I reported the bug because
apparently tools and policy are currently out of sync.

Except that there's no real agreement that this field is needed as part of
the python policy. Quite a number of packages do not use it...

Still, the warning is annoying. When people use a XC or XS prefix,
they probably didn't create a new field by error ... I understand that we
want to be more careful for standard headers but for XC/XS headers, we
could be a bit less picky.

Cheers,

ugh. The only text that I found (referenced earlier) that claims to
comprehensibly describe what the requirements for the new Python policy
and python-central are mentions this field in a way that suggests that
it is mandatory.

Agreed, but if there is no real consensus about what it means... there
is no point in accumulating cruft in such headers, either, and also
(from the perspective of the packager) it is of doubtful merit to add
headers which may have no defined semantics.
