I actually had pretty much the same problem, but I was only using the MSN protocol. Unfortunately, once I finally got a usable terminal inspite of the load, my first reflex what SIGKILL rather than SIGTOP, so I don't really know, but I suspect kopete was on a malloc frenzy that caused intensive swapping. Bug#384106: crashes whole system
Today kopete chrashed again on a different machine. This time I tried to gather some more info. First I did a lsof | grep -i kopete the result is attached. Then I did a strace -p `pidof kopete` and I got only one line: read(3, Looks like kopete is reading from fd 3 forever. Ok finally I did a top -p `pidof kopete` the result is attached too (you have to cat the file to console to see the result) Looks like Kopete does not eat memory or cpu power, it's just sleeping. Before i could do any other tests, KDE became unusable and I had to kill KDM. I'm not very experienced with the tests I can do to get as much info as possible from a hanging process, so if you like me to do some other tests next time kopete crashes, please let me know. After running Kopete for a while, does it consume a more than reasonable amount of memory? When it finally goes berserk, does it eat CPU cycles, suddenly eat memory, etc.? Package: kopete Version: 4:3.5.4-2 Severity: critical The latest version of kopete regulary hangs the whole system. I don't know how to reproduce this bug, but it appears randomly every few days. If it happens, kde hangs completely, leaving the user unable to switch to a different terminal or even to restart X. The mouse is not reacting anymore and the system does not respond on any keystrokes. Sometimes it is possible to ssh into the box from another box and kill kopete which instantly resurrects the system. But if you wait too long, the box does not even answer to ping requests and you have to restart the hard way. This bug did not appear before KDE 3.5.4 entered unstable.
