Bug#386253: Eliminate the GRUB question?

2006-09-07 Thread Christian Perrier
reassign 386253 grub-installer
thanks

Quoting Geert Stappers ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):
 My opinion about this request:

 * split the bugreport in several BR. One against grub-installer,
   the other against the partitioning tools.

Despite this suggestion, I think that it's better keeping the original
suggestion in grub-installer bugsrather than having it rot in the
installation reports..:-)

Hint ; the original suggestion seems worth having a look, though
probably to handle very carefully..:)

Bug#386253: Eliminate the GRUB question?

2006-09-06 Thread Adrian von Bidder
Package: debian-installer
Version: etch beta3
Priority: wishlist

Yodel!

Just a quick idea: if the user tells the partitioner to erase and use the
whole disk in installation, the question from the boot loader whether it
should be put in the MBR could probably be omitted - d-i has control of the
whole machine anyway, so no need to be friendly to other boot managers etc.

Never looked at the installer up close, so I have no idea how you'd pass the
data through, but I think people not familiar with PC internals find that
GRUB question one of the more confusing ones asked in a default
installation: they have no idea what GRUB is, they don't know where the MBR
is plugged into their computer and whether they'll have to rinse it after
use etc.

cheers

My opinion about this request:

* split the bugreport in several BR. One against grub-installer,
  the other against the partitioning tools.
* Introduce a debconf flag partitioning/erased_the_only_disk
* Parted, partman and other set the flag if they erased the only in the
  computer.
* Important is the _only_ disk because the computer could have two
  disks, each dedicated for an operating system. erase whole disk
  could be on the non booting disk.
* grub-installer checks on the partitioning/erased_the_only_disk flag
  to see if some questions can be avoided.

* If I recall correct:
saying no on a grub question, allows installing lilo
