Heya, I just needed to download grml to install my new box, which is based on the VT8251 chipset. Please include the driver in the d-i kernel for etch, thanks. Bug#387168: Missing SATA support for VIA VT8251 based boards
Package: linux-image-2.6.16-2-k7 Version: 2.6.16-18 Unfortunately it is not possible to use SATA drives with VT8251 based boards like my ASUS A8V-XE. Regarding to a thread on viaarena.com it is however possible to patch prior kernels while full support will be included upstream with 2.6.18: http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.aspx?catid=28&threadid=71754&enterthread=y As far as I know 2.6.18 will not make it into Etch, so only patches to the Debian kernel (Installer as well) would allow VIA users to install and use Etch. I just "patched" the debian sources like described in the thread and my SATA harddisk works fine now with 2.6.16-2-k7, but as they provide no "real" patch there, some work is needed here.
